Rated 3 out of 5 by from Chocolate Fantasy This book was one of the choices for my book club in January. I don't think I've ever actually read the book, which is surprising, since I've seen the Gene Wilder movie at least a dozen times. What a fun book to read. I curled up in bed and got lost in fantasy. I tried reading it to my nephew and niece, 4 1/2 and 2 1/2....but it's a bit too advanced for them. Maybe next year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Scrumdidilyumptious! Charlie & The Chocolate Factory is truly one of the best children's books of the 20th century. Roald Dahl has written a story full of humour, unbelievable situations, a bit of sarcasm...and most importantly, chocolate! The story of a young boy named Charlie is exciting, heartwarming and funny. Poor Charlie would like nothing more than to eat and help out his family. Then one day, Willy Wonka, the mysterious owner of the local chocolate factory decides to invite some children to tour the factory by hiding golden tickets in some of his chocolate bars. Once at the factory, the other children seem to meet unfortunate situations due to their misbehaviour. However, Charlie proves to be the nicest child in the group. Some worry that the story might be disturbing to some younger children, however the book is not nearly as scary as the movies are. If children can handle the movie, they'll love the book. This 40th anniversary hardcover is a great keepsake and has awesome illustrations and a large font so it's easy to read. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone from children to adults. It's a classic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mmm, mmm, good This classic children's book has all the right ingredients: a poor child with a good heart, spoiled brats who get their just desserts, a genius eccentric who is a child at heart and recognizes the good in Charlie, and a plot that moves swiftly, served with giant dollops of wonderfully imaginative and creative imagery - you can just SEE the river of chocolate and almost taste it, too. It hints at a slight gruesomeness, but never actually goes that far - in fact all the rotten kids are okay in the end - just enough to feel that all the naughty kids get what they deserve. Roald Dahl was the original Lemony Snicket - without ever expecting his books to be made into movies... I loved this book as a child, and my kids love it now. I like that the nice kid is the hero and despite many opportunities to give into temptation or do the wrong thing, he doesn't. It's funny and sweet, but not cloying, and a great kids' read that has stood the test of time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Book An excellent book that teaches children important lessons, especially to listen to older people. When 4 children didn't listen to Mr. Wonka, they were punished in diabolical, yet funny ways. Three cheers for Roald Dahl!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory This is a wonderful book. I read it when I was a kid and 15 odd years later it is still as magical as it was then. The book promotes imagination and dreaming, great for kids 12 and under but everybody should read it again at some point in their life.
