Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lifesaving book This is one of the best books I've ever read.I was an enabler. I was in counselling and I asked my counsellor if there was a book I could read that might help me. She suggested this book. I swear- a lightbulb went over my head when I started reading this book. This book was written for me. This book has helped me immensely, I'm not afraid to say "No" anymore. I feel this book had made me a stronger woman today. I'm so glad that I read this book. Again, this book is a life saver. I feel reading this book will make the reader a stronger person. I'm so grateful I read this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very helpful This book was very helpful to me. I had difficulties with my family members and this book shed light on how to deal with those issues. The purpose of this book was to help people who are in relationships with alcoholics but this book can be used by anyone in a destructive/abusive relationship with another person. This book changed my life around and I would recommend it to everyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If You Want Your Life Back; Read This Book!!! Melodie Beattie writes a self help book that doesn't feel like you're reading a self help book. There are stories of real people's lives throughout the book and you can see yourself in those stories. There is no preaching and though shalts and though shalt nots here. Melodie Beattie I am sure has had many experiences in her life but in her books she writes from a perspective which says this is what I know maybe it could help you too. Please take what you need from this book and recognize as applicable to you and leave anything that you can't use. This book allows you to learn about codependency and to decide for yourself whether that is you or not. Just knowing more makes so much about this topic clearer and easier to understand. Then you can decide without feeling like you've been labelled or given a lecture what you want to do next; this book is empowering!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love is about honoring the other person NOT taking on their burdens by shielding them from their reckless behavior. The best way to honor someone is to empower them to solve their own problems ... not enable their disease into destructive ends. Codependance confuses love with pity, rescue with romance, and sees unhealthy entanglement as partnership. The danger is that such relationships can last for years because it is frighteningly and overwhelmingly difficult to break away from one another. This book is a classic in preventing and releasing such terrible couplings. Caretaking is not about caring for the other person. It is about control and a "you owe me" mentality. It's human to expect things to go both ways. The challenge is to watch yourself so the tendancy doesn't have power over you like a compulsive machine.

About the Author

Beattie was a struggling single parent of two children and freelance author and journalist cranking out stories for a small-town daily newspaper in 1986 when she came up with a book idea. She wanted to write a book about what happens to people when they love someone who is addicted to alcohol and other drugs."There were many books out there about how to help an addict or alcoholic. Nobody was talking about how an addict impacts the lives of the people around him or her, and how crazy you can become when you love someone who is addicted," Beattie said. "Even though I was sober, I didn''t know how crazy I could get until it happened to me." Twenty publishers turned down Beattie''s book proposal. "It''s a good idea, but we don''t think there''s that many codependents out there," they wrote back.Hazelden, however, a treatment center and recovery publisher based in Minnesota, saw a need for the book. The publisher understood how families of alcoholics suffer and believed Beattie''s book idea would help people. Beattie marched to the welfare department, asked for enough financial help to make it through the three months it would take her to write the book, then locked herself in a basement office and cranked out Codependent No More. Codependent No More has now sold 3.5 million copies. Beattie has since written nine more books, five for major publishing houses on the east and west coasts. She relocated from Minnesota to California, and she has long-since paid back the welfare depart
