Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must read This is a fabulous book that every serious reader must read. Set in apartheid South Africa this beautifully written book tackles difficult situations that will make you really feel for the characters. This book is definitely in my top 100 reads of all time.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Thought Provoking... Very unique writing style, it takes a while to get use to his ways for using a dash instead of using quotation marks in the dialogue characters have. It is a novel that is rather thought provoking but if you are not into analyzing and seriously following along then it will get quite difficult to read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A moving read We finished this book with our bookclub and everyone loved it. The novel takes a good look at significant issues in South Africa - racism, environmentalism, poverty, crime - still relevant 50 years after publishing. Besides the broad scope of these issues, I also loved the characters and their individual experiences. They are all so human - full of good and evil, hope and hopelessness, faith and doubt... They inspired me to further gratitude, generosity and faith. I highly recommend this novel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cry, The Beloved Country This is a compassionate tale of an old pastor trying to get accustomed to the rapidly growing city of Johannesburg. It is sad about his son Absalom and is brother John but overall a very compelling story.
