There are secrets in the town of Bon Temps, ones that threaten those closest to Sookie—and could destroy her heart....

Sookie Stackhouse  finds it easy to turn down the request of former barmaid Arlene when she wants her job back at Merlotte’s. After all, Arlene tried to have Sookie killed. But her relationship with Eric Northman is not so clearcut. He and his vampires are keeping their distance…and a cold silence. And when Sookie learns the reason why, she is devastated.

Then a shocking murder rocks Bon Temps, and Sookie is arrested for the crime.

But the evidence against Sookie is weak, and she makes bail. Investigating the killing, she’ll learn that what passes for truth in Bon Temps is only a convenient lie. What passes for justice is more spilled blood. And what passes for love is never enough…

Rated 5 out of 5 by from can't wiat for After Dead: What Came Next in the World of Sookie Stackhouse by Charlaine Harris Started reading it after Amazon was able to send it out the day before it was released so I got it on the 7th & was able to start reading it right away. Great thing about having Vertigo for 2 weeks is the only thing I was really able to do was read as everything else made my head spin. Ended up eating a late supper (11pm) as I had to wait to eat after have to endure 2 car rides to get the the afterhours clinic and home again. So I read till I was feeling better and then I just couldn't put the book down. Am sad to see the series end but what an ending it was

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too many loose ends I normally LOVE the Sookie books but this one I was not exactly happy it was ending but even worse I feel like there were too many loose ends. The overall feel of the book to me was like she was rushed to write it/ get it over with to meet a deadline, I hope there is some sort of a spin off or another book/ short story to let you know how things end for the characters she just forgot about. Plus tbh I HATE who she ended up with don't get me wrong I love him but that to me shouldn't have happened. :( I'm doing my best to forget this book and I am sticking with how I think it should have ended! LOL

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ending of a great series I've read all the books of the series and I must say I was sad to read this last one. I did enjoy it though, it closed the loop, even if the sex was missing from it (compare to the previous ones)... If you've read the previous one, read this one as well, it's ending well.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from A silly ending to a great series This is the letdown book of the year, a silly ending to a wonderful series. If I hadn't seen Harris' name and picture on the cover, I would have believed my grandmother wrote this crock, except that Grandma would have written a better sex scene at the end. Harris took almost every single character from the previous 12 books, threw them into at least one plot ingredient, and then tossed them all together in one glutinous, inedible, unsatisfying mess. If you must read this book, and I caution you that life is short and you should not waste your time, put it on hold at the library and eat good, healthy food while you wait for this emotional-calorie-free, carcinogenic-Aspartame-sweetened slop. Dead Ever After is driven halfheartedly by a skinny, confused plot and a cast of cardboard cutouts. A large percentage of the already largely unnecessary verbal padding in this book involves reminders of who each character is, because they're all here. Even the dead and departed from other books are name-dropped just in case we've forgotten a detail from one of the much better, much more enjoyable Sookie books. (Go ahead, rub it in, Charlaine.) Or possibly Ms. Harris was reminding herself as she has clearly lost interest in both the story and the main characters. She reminds us again and again that Sookie has only very limited choices in life partners, and that there are no other viable mates for her in the entire world. That would involve writing in some new characters, and I guess that just wasn't an option. The only characters who don't appear in this bloated mess are Hunter, the mindreading boy, and Bubba. Why name-drop every other creature from every other book, and leave out Bubba? Maybe Bubba and Hunter are going to be the subjects of future stories, which is maybe a good thing. Thirteen is definitely Charlaine Harris's unlucky number. Either that or she's just having a laugh at our expense. We've been cheated out of a drama-driven Happy Ever After and given only a Mildly Amused Ever After. The Bon Temps are definitely over.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sad to say goodbye, very much enjoyed the book. I have followed this series from the beginning, reading and re-reading the books as I waited for the next one to be published. This series ended on a high note for me, I loved some of the twists this last book offered and the final story concluded similar to my expectations. I am so sad to say goodbye to new adventures for these characters but I have loved being a part of this world and very much enjoyed the series and the final book. I was able to close the cover satisfied and content with how the story was wrapped up. Looking forward to the next story from this author, she is a great talent.

Read from the Book

Prologue JANUARY The New Orleans businessman, whose gray hair put him in his fifties, was accompanied by his much younger and taller bodyguard/ chauffeur on the night he met the devil in the French Quarter. The meeting was by prearrangement. “This is really the Devil we’re going to see?” asked the bodyguard. He was tense—but then, that wasn’t too surprising. “Not the Devil, but a devil.” The businessman was cool and collected on the outside, but maybe not so much on the inside. “Since he came up to me at the Chamber of Commerce banquet, I’ve learned a lot of things I didn’t know before.” He looked around him, trying to spot the creature he’d agreed to meet. He told his bodyguard, “He convinced me that he was what he said he was. I always thought my daughter was simply deluded. I thought she imagined she had power because she wanted to have something . . . of her own. Now I’m willing to admit she has a certain talent, though nowhere near what she thinks.” It was cold and damp, even in New Orleans, in the January night. The businessman shifted from foot to foot to keep warm. He told the bodyguard, “Evidently, meeting at a crossroads is traditional.” The street was not as busy as it would be in the summer, but there were still drinkers and tourists and natives going about their night’s entertainment. He wasn’t afraid, he told himself. “Ah, here he comes,” the bu

Editorial Reviews

“The Sookie Stackhouse series seamlessly mixes sensuality, violence, and humor.”—Boulder Weekly

“Harris’s creation offers a magical and mysterious twist on traditional vampire stories.”—Houston Chronicle

“What sucked me in? Definitely the books’ oddly charming, often funny mix of the mundane and the absurd. And the chills and thrills in boudoirs and various locales around the South aren’t too bad either.”—The Seattle Times
