Fall Of Giants: Book One Of The Century Trilogy is rated 5 out of 5 by 3.

A thirteen-year-old Welsh boy enters a man''s world in the mining pits; an American law student rejected by love finds a surprising new career in Woodrow Wilson''s White House; a housekeeper for the aristocratic Fitzherberts takes a fateful step above her station, while Lady Maud Fitzherbert herself crosses deep into forbidden territory when she falls in love with a German spy; and two orphaned Russian brothers embark on radically different paths when their plan to emigrate to America falls afoul of war, conscription, and revolution.

From the dirt and danger of a coal mine to the glittering chandeliers of a palace, from the corridors of power to the bedrooms of the mighty, Fall of Giants takes readers into the inextricably entangled fates of five families-and into a century that we thought we knew, but that now will never seem the same again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Educational and Interesting - great reading! This is a very interesting, but also educational historical fiction novel. It is set during the 1st World War. It follows the lives of several people of different classes, and within different countries. Follett has used factual information in telling this story, thereby making it educational. However because the facts are delivered as conversations in the lives of the people that he allows us to get to know, learning about World War 1 is interesting. Admittedly I found it easier to read about the political decisions involving Britain, Germany and the USA, as opposed to Russia’s part in the war. However I feel that the issues within Russia (as I learned that a civil war developed during World War 1, when Russia was supposed to be fighting the Germans – they began fighting among themselves), are so complicated due to the oppression there and people’s efforts to find something more appropriate, that it was understandable that that part of the book (within the last ¼ of the book) was difficult to follow, for me. I enjoy reading about royalty and the lives of the “privileged”, and found it particularly interesting how World War 1 seemed to me, to be about a fight for respect among the people of Europe. Unfortunately the ending of the war did not resolve the respect issue sufficiently, and of course there is another story there. However, that was one of my many conclusions after reading Follett’s Fall of Giants. I admit I have a pet peeve about male writers writing about what females are thinking, and feeling – and Follett fell into the trap. His description of scenes of passion and sex, whereby he describes a woman’s experience feels unrealistic to me, but that would be about my only criticism about this book. There is certainly enough sex and emotional in it, and lots of education and history. I recommend this book highly. I feel Follett is really a great story-teller and just love that I can learn a lot while reading something very enjoyable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Historical Drama Although not really my style, I did take the time to read this brick, and found it to my liking. Follett did an excellent job and most certainly spent a lot of time to get the historical facts blended into his fictional characters. The story follows five families through the turn of the century and leaves them in the early `20`s. A number of his characters are posed for the second novel which I must say I look forward to reading. I gave Follet five stars on this one because of the way he has followed the characters and integrated them with actual historical figures throughout. Well done!!
