by H.G. Bissinger

Da Capo Press | September 1, 2004 | Kobo Edition (eBook)

Friday Night Lights: A Town, A Team, And A Dream is rated 5 out of 5 by 2.
Return once again to the timeless account of the Permian Panthers of Odessa--the winningest high-school football team in Texas history. Odessa is not known to be a town big on dreams, but the Panthers help keep the hopes and dreams of this small, dusty town going. Socially and racially divided, its fragile economy follows the treacherous boom-bust path of the oil business. In bad times, the unemployment rate barrels out of control; in good times, its murder rate skyrockets. But every Friday night from September to December, when the Permian High School Panthers play football, this West Texas town becomes a place where dreams can come true. With frankness and compassion, H. G. Bissinger chronicles a season in the life of Odessa and shows how single-minded devotion to the team shapes the community and inspires--and sometimes shatters--the teenagers who wear the Panthers' uniforms.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Read - Better than the movie! This book is a perfect example of how paper is better than film. Friday Night Lights is a sensational read that related to me on so many different levels. As an athlete, a student and a fan of the game of football, this book shows a behind the scenes look at the pressures, sacrifices and glory of being a high performance athlete in high school. The Odessa Panthers football team, has the entire weight of the community on their shoulders every season to bring home a state championship. Players fight through injury, overcome personal setbacks and focus on their future hopes and dreams of getting a full athletic scholarship to any university interested. This read really shows you why the state of texas is a football factory. From the time these players wake up and go to sleep, they eat, sleep and live for football. This is their life and they wouldnt have it any other way. I personally recommend this book for all athletes and I hope you can relate to it on such a personal level as I did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Glimpse into a Different World I am a fan of both the movie and the TV show inspired by this novel and I've been wanting to read the book for ages. It's one of those books where , within the first ten pages, you understand exactly why this book was on the best-seller list. I loved every page and I'm someone who doesn't usually like things that are so factual or filled with such statistics and information. Totally captivating and a wonderful look at a by-gone era.
