Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best read this year! I try to 'pre-read' most titles that I send to my grandsons - This has to be the best one for 2009! Everything that you wanted to know about the Universe logically packed into an incredibly great mystery! Could not put this down! Have bought 2 more copies for other Tweens/Teens. If you have an otherwise luke-warm science reader, then get this title & the sequel, science teachers will thank you!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Educational I bought this for my 9 year old grandson, but had to read it myself. The story is so-so - geared for kids, but the science is amazing. The Hawkings managed to break down universal physics into a readable form that is easy to undertand - even including Hawkings latest findings about Black Holes. I highly recommend this book to both children and adults to understand the abundance and infinite energy of the univere.

About the Book

Stephen Hawking, author of the multi-million copy bestselling "A Brief History of Time," and his daughter Lucy explain the universe to readers of all ages. George's parents, who have always been wary of technology, warn him about their new neighbors: Eric is a scientist and his daughter, Annie, seems to be following in his footsteps. But when George befriends them and Cosmos, their super-computer, he finds himself on a wildly fun adventure, while learning about physics, time, and the universe. With Cosmos's help, he can travel to other planets and a black hole. But what would happen if the wrong people got their hands on Cosmos? George, Annie, and Eric aren't about to find out, and what ensues is a funny adventure that clearly explains the mysteries of science. Garry Parsons' energetic illustrations add humor and interest, and his scientific drawings add clarity; there are also eight 4-page full-color inserts of scientific photos.

George’s Secret Key to the Universe Pigs don’t just vanish, thought George as he stood staring into the depths of the very obviously empty pigsty. He tried closing his eyes and then opening them again, to see if it was all some kind of horrible optical illusion. But when he looked again, the pig was still gone, his vast muddy pink bulk nowhere to be seen. In fact, when George examined the situation for a second time, it had gotten worse, not better. The side door of the pigsty, he noticed, was hanging open, which meant someone hadn’t shut it properly. And that someone was probably him. “Georgie!” he heard his mother call from the kitchen. “I’m going to start supper in a minute, so you’ve only got about an hour. Have you done your homework?” “Yes, Mom,” he called back in a fake cheery voice. “How’s your pig?” “He’s fine! Fine!” said George squeakily. He threw in a few experimental oinks, just to make it sound as though everything was business as usual, here in the small backyard that was full of many, many vegetables and one enormous—but now mysteriously absent—pig. He grunted a few more times for effect—it was very important his mother did not come out into the garden before George had time to think up a plan. How he was going to find the pig, put it back in the sty, close the door, and get back in time for supper, he had no idea. But he was working on it, a
