J. K. (Joanne Kathleen) Rowling, July 31, 1965 J. K. Rowling was born at Chipping Sodbury General Hospital in Gloucestershire, U. K. on July 31, 1965 to Anne and Peter Rowling. Two years later, her sister Dianne was born. Rowling attended Tutshill Primary and then went on to Wyedean Comprehensive where she was made Head Girl in her final year. Her University years she spent at Exeter University, where she received a degree in French. She later took some teaching classes at Moray House Teacher Training College and a teacher-training course in Manchester, England. This extensive education created a perfect foundation to spark the Harry Potter series that Rowling is renowned for. After college, Rowling moved to London to work for Amnesty International, where she researched human rights abuses in Francophone Africa, and worked as a bilingual secretary. In 1992, Rowling quit office work to move to Portugal and teach English as a Second Language. There she met and married her husband, a Portuguese TV journalist. But the marriage dissolved soon after the birth of their daughter, Jessica. It was after her stint teaching in Portugal that Rowling began to write the premise for Harry Potter. She returned to Britain and settled in Edinburgh to be near her sister Di, and attempted to at least finish her book, before looking for another teaching job. Rowling was in fact working as a French teacher in June of 1997 when she heard the news that her book would soon be published by London agent Christopher Little, in association with Bloomsbury Children's Books. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was published in June of 1997 and was an overnight sensation. It won the British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year and was shortlisted for the Guardian Fiction Award. Her first book also received a "Commended" citation in the Carnegie Medal awards. She also received 8,000 pounds from the Scottish Arts Council, which contributed to the finishing touches on The Chamber of Secrets. Rowling continued on to win the Smarties Book Prize three years in a row, the only author ever to do so. At the Bologna Book Fair, Arthur Levine from Scholastic Books, bought the American rights to Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for the unprecedented amount of $105,000.00. The book was retitled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for it's American release, and proceeded to top the Best Seller's lists for children's and adult books. The American edition won Best of the Year in the School Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Parenting Magazine and the Cooperative Children's Book Center. It was also noted as an ALA Notable Children's Book as well as Number One on the Top Ten of ALA's Best Books for Young Adults. Her consecutive books in the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, have taken first, second and third place on the New York Times Bestseller List for three years in a row. Rowling planned on the series being a culmination of seven books, one for each year of the main character's attendance at the Wizard's School. In a promising development for the new author, Warner Brothers bought the movie rights to the first two books of Harry Potter for a very substantial amount of money and has turned out three very successful installments of movies faithfully based on the books.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Magical Set! I had been eyeing this for months, but with the renewed interest in Harry Potter due to the spinoff films being announced, these started to sell --fast. I decided not to take any chances and ordered one straightaway before they sold out. The set is beautifully done, and the gilded pages are beautiful. The colours used are very vibrant as well. Lovely! My only 'complaint' is that these are not bound properly, they are a glued binding, not sewn in. That is to say, imagine paperbacks. Their pages are glued to the spine of the cover. That's exactly what we have here, and I can imagine that they will not last as long (especially the bigger books) as they would have if they had been 'sewn'.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most Elegant Collection! While looking at numerous Harry Potter collections, the Harry Potter Special Edition 7 caught my eye. The information about it online was scarce and I had to find an unboxing on YouTube just to see what the set actually looked like. In my opinion this set is the most elegant pairing between the original covers and the adult collection. Each book has gold embossed lettering for the spine, titles, and JK Rowling's signature on the front cover. The cover of each book has a moderately sized piece of the original artwork, with the embossed title above and the signature below. The books all have gold leaf paging with a built in ribbon bookmark, they do not come with dust covers, but they are packaged in a relatively sturdy storage box. For me this set is perfect, and I would highly recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I imagined When I first saw that the entire harry potter set was on sale for $128, I couldn't afford to not buy it haha. I was wondering what the difference between this and $212 variant was. When these books arrived, they were exactly the same as the other set. The books are in excellent condition, hardcover really gives it that premium feel and the dust jackets provide extra protection to the books. The case that encloses the books is very well put together and brings out the inner child in us all. This is the UK version published by bloomsbury Juvenile UK, which is the desired version as it most closely resembles J.K. Rowlings original work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing!! I ordered this set online and within just TWO days it was sitting on my doorstep. It was so exciting to have a brand new, complete in hard cover set. As a huge fan who had been buying each book as it came out it is exciting to now have them all look the same (hard cover). Another great thing is the covers are all the original covers, not the adult, children or various country covers that have circulated over the years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing!! I just got my set. Super excited!!! I must say I love ordering books from chapters, they are always prompt with delivery. The only thing I didn't like was that it didn't have too much detail of the box sex itself. This set is definetely going to be treasured!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from There are no more words. What can I say about Harry Potter that hasn't already been said? Pretty much nothing. It is creative, imaginative, easy to relate to, entertaining, scary, funny, romantic, fantastical, suspenseful, genius and just plain magical. The characters feel completely real and the magical world she has created is absolutely astounding and so detailed. My favourites are Snape, Dobby, Hagrid, Sirius, Lupin. Draco, Cedric, Neville and of course the three heroes but I could go on and on. In all, it is my favourite book and I've read it dozens of times and have no plans to stop doing so.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great set of books for the young minds I've purchased these books individually few years ago. Each book would take a year to be published, and now the whole series can be purchased in a set. I'm a big fan of Harry Potter as I have grown up with the series. Harry Potter is a wonderful read for all ages, and I recommend it to anyone who has a thirst for a story of courage, of hope, of friendship, of magic. The story of a boy's journey through life, befriending all sorts of characters along the way. The story of a boy who constantly battles evil and wins, over and over again, sacrificing so much along the way. I recommend this book to everyone, as these books are my very favorite. I've kept these books to pass on to my younger siblings whom I hope they will also enjoy the series as I had did.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Be ware of the "used+ rare" format.. I ordered the "used+rare" copy of british cloth back edition from this site, but the set arrived was the regular hard back edition. Since I already own the regular hard back edition, I don't need the second set. I wanted the cloth back edition for my library keep. They should not deceive customers with "used+rare" term for hard back edition. Why do they list their hard back version in this page and show this british edition picture? Very deceiving.
