Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage is rated 3 out of 5 by 2.

In this superb new collection from one of our best and best-loved writers, nine stories draw us immediately into that special place known as Alice Munro territory—a place where an unexpected twist of events or a suddenly recaptured memory can trace the arc of an entire life.

The fate of a strong-minded housekeeper with a "frizz of reddish hair,"just entering the dangerous country of old-maidhood, is unintentionally (and deliciously) reversed by a teenaged girlÕs practical joke. A college student, visiting her aunt for the first time, stumbles on a long-hidden secret and its meaning in her own life. An inveterate philanderer finds the tables turned when he puts his wife into an old-age home. A young cancer patient, stunned by good news, discovers a perfect bridge to her suddenly regained future. A woman, remembering an afternoon''s wild lovemaking with a stranger, realizes how the memory of that encounter has both changed for her and sustained her through a lifetime.

Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage provides the deep pleasures and rewards that Alice Munro''s large and ever-growing audience has come to expect.

Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from An interesting collection of short stories Alice Munro proves that she is worthy of the literary praise that is bestowed upon her. This collection of short stories does not disappoint. Several of the characters mirror snipits of Munro and her life providing readers with a whiff of autobiographical tidbits. The woven theme, dominant in just about every story, is loss and self-discovery. The emotional heaviness of the stories start to take its toll after about the third one. The stories are so well written and very poignant. This is the perfect book to keep on the bookshelf to revisit time and again.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fails to achieve greatness Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage, Alice Munro’s latest collection of nine short stories, is a languid journey through the rather unremarkable lives of characters who have the potential for, but fail to achieve, greatness. The title of the collection represents all of the stages of love (not necessarily in chronological order) and Munro manages to weave these into each of her stories. Her characters deal with transient moments that endure a lifetime, or, alternately, lifelong relationships that lose all meaning and context in an instant. Unfortunately, Munro’s characters remain flat and stagnant despite being placed in situations that should create action and movement. In the title story, Munro combines an entirely too plausible situation with one that is so strange that it seems farcical, and somehow creates a story fit for myth or legend. Two young girls take fate into their own hands and manipulate an emotionally needy woman. The ironic outcome should surpris

About the Author

Alice Munro grew up in Wingham, Ontario, and attended the University of Western Ontario. She has published ten previous books- Dance of the Happy Shades ; Lives of Girls and Women ; Something I’ve Been Meaning to Tell You ; Who Do You Think You Are? ; The Moons of Jupiter ; The Progress of Love ; Friend of My Youth ; Open Secrets ; The Love of a Good Woman ; and Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage -as well as Selected Stories , an anthology of stories culled from her dazzling body of work. During her distinguished career, Munro has been the recipient of many awards and prizes, including the W.H. Smith Award in the United Kingdom and, in the United States, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in Short Fiction, the Lannan Literary Award, and the Rea Award for the Short Story. In Canada, her prize-winning record is so extraordinary-three Governor General’s Awards, two Giller Prizes (one of which was for Runaway ), the Trillium Book Award, the Jubilee Prize, and the Libris Award, among many others-that it has been ironically suggested that as such a perennial winner, she no longer qualifies for new prizes. Abroad, acclaim continues to pour in. Both Runaway and Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize Best Book Award, Caribbean and Canada region, and were chosen as one of the Books of the Year by The New York Times . Alice Munro’s stories appear regularly in The New Yorker, as we
