Rated 4 out of 5 by from Spooky and fun The Good Stuff Wonderful love story intertwined with ghost story - perfection!!! Ghosts - thank you, I love me good ghost stories and there are so very few these days Gothic feel, reminds me of those fabulous Victoria Holt novels I read when I was a young teen - this is a compliment, those books made me fall in love with reading Perfect for reading on a dark and stormy night Enjoyed the relationship between Violet and Lord Jaspar Violet is an absolutely delightfully likeable character. I fell in love with her immediately Fabulous dialogue Hooked me in from the very first paragraph - kept me up till 1 am reading. I was very hard pressed to put the damn thing down Please Alyxandra, write more of these, there are so very few well written Gothic ghost stories Perfect uses of humour There was a ghost dog, how can you not love a story that has a ghost dog The Not So Good Stuff Wanted more No redeeming qualities in Violet's mother - she felt more like a caricature than an actual fully fleshed character Favorite Quotes/Passages " I'd made her angry and vulnerable and I didn't need to be told she wouldn't forgive me for it. I knew girls like Tabitha - I'd been raised by one. She would need some kind of revenge." "I wandered through the huge room with its towering walls of books. There were so many to choose from. It was better than chocolate cream biscuits, better than Xavier's kiss-and nearly as good as Colin's." "You look lovely, and more importantly, you're positively glowing with ectoplasm." 4 Dewey's I picked this up at Forster's Book Garden Ltd in Bolton after meeting Alyxandra at OLA

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing I'm not one to buy into the whole ghost genre, however I thought I would check out this book since I enjoyed the authors other books so much. I'm really glad I did, this book was breath taking. I can't wait for the author to come out with more books for me and society to enjoy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Horror, suspense, excitement and romance. A perfect balance. A ghost haunts Violet until she finds the murderer of the ghost, Rowena to set her free and to capture the killer. It is a 2012 red maple award nominee and deserved it. I loved this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes me Want to see Ghosts This story is set during the reign of Queen Victoria when Spiritualism and the holding of seances was most popular in England. Violet's mother, Celeste Willougby, used peoples' belief in talking to ghosts to exploit them for her financial gain. Violet hated being forced to participate in these deceptions, but saw no way out of this lifestyle. While the two were on their way to the country estate of Lord Jasper, Violet's life changed for ever when she sited 'corpse candles' and the ghost of a girl in the window of her carriage. This she knew was the 'real' thing unlike the fraud her mother committed. Somehow Violet has to resolve the death of this ghost/girl and come to an understanding of her ability. The descriptions of scenes and scents were so vivid that this book came alive for me. I could feel myself getting breathless as Violet ran across the fields from Lord Jasper's to the adjoining estate. The scent of lilies and lilac sprung to mind during the various seances. I could even feel and smell the aroma of the rose petals that were scattered about Jasper's estate. I couldn't see the ghosts, but I could certainly imagine them, especially when they crowded around Violet in an attempt to protect her from her mother's wrath. Thanks to author Alyxandra Harvey for a totally enjoyable story. The character of Violet was a pleasant surprise. She is a strong young woman seeking to improve the situation she finds herself in. She carefully considers who to include in her circle of friends and from whom to ask for assistance instead of throwing herself upon another and expect that person to resolve her problems for her. I am happy to report that Alyxandra has written a sequel to this story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great ghostly read A copy was provided by the publisher prior to the release date for review purposes. Haunting Violet's cover is absolutely gorgeous! Purple of course is my favorite color. Though aside from that, the cover is quite fitting for the story once you've read it. It features main character Violet ,hence the color of the cover, laying in water, which is decoratively adorned with water lilies. However, it is unfortunate that the paper used to print the cover on is bland. A shimmering and reflective paper would have enhanced the beauty of the cover to an entirely different level. What many readers do not know from reading the summary is that Haunting Violet takes place during the year 1872, thus making it a historical paranormal romance for young adults. Violet Willoughby is the only daughter of a fraudulent medium. Along with her are her mother, who believes that her work fraudulent medium work is purely charitable, Colin, an Irish orphan , and Marjorie, a maid-of-all-work rescued from a brothel. Readers will find themselves in Violet's point of view, witnessing the trickery both she and Colin are forced to ensue to make the fraudulent seances appear realistic to the paying spectators. Despite her mothers constant reminder that what she does is purely charitable and reassuring for the mourners, Violet sees it only as a new way for her mother to scam people of their money. Their journey eventually arrives at Lord Jasper's home, a wealthy gentlemen with an open mind towards the spiritual and supernatural. Violet's mother instantly jumps at the chance to impress everyone with her charade and bodes Violet and Colin to come along. Though what is not expected is that Violet would encounter a real ghost, one of Tabitha's sister Rowena. Not only that but Violet also discovers that she has the gift that her mother's been faking the entire time; the gift to see the spiritual world. Immediately, Violet, Colin and her new friend Elizabeth find themselves racing through their days trying to solve the murder. You see, someone murdered Rowena, though the families claim it was an accidental drowning. Rowena won't rest until Violet has found her murderer and this of course causes quite a bit of danger for our leading lady. Additional to the gruesome and sometimes hilarious ghosts portrayed in Harvery's Haunting Violet, there is also mystery and romance. The romance, however, is very slight and in no way destroys the original aim of the plot. I found myself enjoying Harvey's Haunting Violet very much. The refreshing tale of ghosts, murder, mystery and romance all taking place in the late 1800's was very exciting and fun to read. A recommended read for all young adults.
