Rated 5 out of 5 by from A gripping prison memoir Hammering home life in prison: Ex-convict writes a hate-filled rant. If assigned as a textbook in high schools, this blunt memoir might steer some youth away from crime. Following in the illustrious footsteps of Roger Mad Dog Caron, who won a Governor-General's Award for his 1978 jail tale, Go-Boy!, comes Richard Dubé, another Franco-Ontarian criminal-turned-author peddling his institutionally twisted soul on the book market. The Haven takes its title from Millhaven Penitentiary, where Dubé once spent 400 days in the Hole, or solitary confinement. Millhaven is the same place where Stephen Reid wrote his autobiographical prison novel, Jackrabbit Parole. Caron did time there, too. Apparently it's an inspiring writer's retreat. They even supply you with the pencils. Dubé's book is raw and chilling, a sharp reminder that we all live with a false sense of security. Deep down we all know that our prisons are cruel, inhuman places that harden hearts and churn out career
