Helen Of Troy

by Margaret George

Penguin Books | May 29, 2007 | Trade Paperback

Helen Of Troy is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 5.
The New York Times bestseller from Margaret George, author of Mary, Called Magdalene and Elizabeth I

With her amazing ability to summon the voices of historical characters, Margaret George tells the story of the woman whose face "launched a thousand ships" in Helen of Troy. Laden with doom, yet surprising in its moments of innocence and beauty, this is a beautifully told story of a legendary woman and her times. An exquisite page-turner with a cast of irresistible characters--Odysseus, Hector, Achilles, Priam, Clytemnestra, Agamemnon, as well as Helen and Paris themselves--and a wealth of material that reproduces the Age of Bronze in all its glory, Helen of Troy brings to life a war that we have all learned about but never before experienced.

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderfully done Margaret George delivers another great story with Helen of Troy. She pulls you into her world and recreates it without a second thought and you can't wait to turn the page to find out what happens next. I love Margaret Geroge and she doesn't disappoint here.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sumptuous Hisorical Fiction The character Helen is so believable, every detail of the novel so intricate, and the plot line, even though the history is known by many who start the book, is still a page turner. This is for anyone who loves Greek history and mythology, since both are described fully. The author's Helen reaches across time to empower and inspire the reader. The makings of a classic are all present: war, love, courage, hope...The only reason I didn't give it a five rating is because at times the story would meander; the lack of dialogue and action forced the story to lose its magic. A sumptuous, detailed read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Calculated Triumph George takes a heroine whose very existance is still under speculation and makes her into a real and mythical woman. Taking a fantastical twist on the legend, George explains Helen's breathtaking beauty as a gift from the gods, her being the only female product of one of Zeus's many illicit affairs. While in the hands of any other author, this would have been a risk that would bring downfall, but George is skilled enough to not only make it work, but make it REAL. This novel is a wonder. A mix of fantasy and history, it impressed and entranced me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved It Helen is a true heroine! Whether she is Queen of Sparta, or Queen of Troy she is dignified and she perseveres! Full of love and heartache you will love this story if you've ever been the least bit interested in the woman who led to the fall of Troy!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Really Good Story! This book intrigued me from the beginning. I knew almost nothing about Helen of Troy and the Trojan War and I was hooked from the beginning. I loved the details and I actually liked the fact that I really didn't like Helen. Now I want to read more of Margaret George's works!

Editorial Reviews

Delicious. (People)

An impressive feat of research and imagination. ItÆs no mean trick to resurrect not only ancient Attic politics and lifestyles, but the atmosphere of a time in which the gods truly spoke. (Diana Gabaldon, author of Outlander)

A feast . . . George leaves us with the most coveted prize of fiction: a world . . . we wished existed, and that thoroughly does between the covers. (Chicago Tribune)

Fresh and vivid. (The Washington Post)

What Ms. George has created with this book is a great summer read: realistic characters, engaging plots and enough mythology and Homer to make it all interesting. (The Dallas Morning News)
