HypnoBirthing®: A Celebration of Life

Childbirth is not something to be feared; it is a natural expression of life. With HypnoBirthing, your pregnancy and childbirth will become the gentle, life-affirming process it was meant to be.

In this easy-to-understand guide, HypnoBirthing founder Marie Mongan explodes the myth of pain as a natural accompaniment to birth. She proves through sound medical information that it is not our bodies but our culture that has made childbirth a moment of anguish, and that when we release the fear of birth, a fear that is keeping our bodies tense and closed, we will also release the pain.

HypnoBirthing is nature, not manipulation. It relaxes the mind in order to let the body work as it is designed. The HypnoBirthing exercises-positive thinking, relaxation, visualization, breathing and physical preparation-will lead to a happy and comfortable pregnancy, even if you are currently unsure of an intervention-free birth. Your confidence, trust and happy anticipation will in turn lead to the peaceful, fulfilling and bonding birth that is your right as a mother.

More than 10,000 happy couples have had their lives changed for the better by HypnoBirthing. More than 500 news organizations-including Good Morning America, The Today Show, Dateline, The Richard & Judy Show, Time, Newsweek, Parenting and Better Homes & Gardens-have joined the movement for better birthing.

Why is HypnoBirthing changing the way the world gives birth? That''s simple. Because it works.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy Read and Great Information I bought this book after reading the positive reviews and am so happy that I did. I was going to buy a more expensive book with 5 meditation disc before reading the negative reviews that it received and opted for this book instead. I like how this book gives a history of birthing. It provided a different perspective to birthing that I had never heard before, the very idea of birthing without fear is a beautiful concept and really does make sense. The book is easy to read and explains the relaxation techniques well. I further find the disc with the 2 relaxation exercises very beneficial. I practice regularly and even use the relaxation exercises when I am under a great deal of stress and finds it works wonders. I know that this book is to be used in combination of the hypnobirthing classes but I find the classes are not convienent to attend and are really expensive. I thougth that I would try the book first and then register for the class if I couldn't get to the relaxed state. I think for myself the book is enough, however I think for my husband to be the best support person he would benefit from the class as to really understand the breathing techniques. This book should be in any expecting parents library.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Read This book is meant to be paired with the Hypnobirthing class taught by qualified instructors. As a stand-alone book, it is informative and easy to read. It begins by discussing the historical perceptions of birth, and how they affect our current expectations. It then goes on to teach how to broaden the mind to accept that labour isn't necessarily a negative experience, but something that should be looked forward to. It also provides you with the tools and techniques you need to practice to ensure that your birthing experience is a positive one. Start reading this book as early in your pregnancy as possible - the more time you have to practice the techniques, the easier they will be to put into practice when it counts!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Inspiring way to see birth I have read through this book and am practicing the techniques to prepare myself, mind and body, for childbirth. I am 7 months pregnant at the moment and hope to be able to deliver naturally. This book offers a history of the social perception of giving birth which really made me think and realise that we are taught to pair pain with delivering a baby when realistically it is a function that our body has been engineered to do since the beginning of time. This book helps prepare your brain for labour by giving you relaxation techniques, breathing techniques and visualisation techniques to use during the experience of contractions (or waves and surges). I think I would have seeked out classes if I had heard of this method earlier because it is hard to practice on your own - especially getting dad involved (he wants to but in our day to day schedule it is hard to make the time). But just reading the book gives me ideas and confidence that I can control my mind and body through relaxation. I will have to update my review in a few weeks to tell you if it helped!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic - this book helped me have a drug-free birth!! This book is a quick read. It really helped keep me relaxed, and better able to manage the pain. I never got to the point of asking for any drugs, as I had thought I might. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to have a natural birth, it's well worth the read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from For a Natural Birth -for mother and supporter So glad that I read this book! This book shows us a peek into other cultures, and their birthing practices. It puts us more in touch with what's natural, and how our birthing ought to be. It is also full or practical ways to prepare for giving birth, and to support one who is giving birth. Probably not for women who like the idea of a medicalized birthing experience, but for those who want a natural one. This book is meant to go along with the Hypnobirthing classes -about $400 for a full 2 day weekend. I would definitely not recommend the one that my husband and I went to with Jennifer Price-Jones; after one day, having gotten nothing more out of the class than what we got from the book, we decided not to return for the second one. I was very disappointed, as it should have been a great prep for the birth. I would recommend asking questions before taking the class. How is it going to be taught? for example. I would have liked a more hands-on approach. I'm sure that a lot depends on the 'teacher', and if you find a good one, I would think that it would be worth it.

Read from the Book

Preparing women for birthing by educating them in the true physiology of labor was the backbone of Dick-ReadÆs work. For many women who were preparing for natural birthing in the 1950s, that appeal to their intellect was enough to make them break with traditional attitudes and bring their children into the world unmedicated and alert. It was simpler then. Most babies came into the world with the assistance of the family doctor, a person who was probably known to the birthing mother since she, herself, was a child. While women did not expect that birth would be a picnic, they were not terrified of the experience, and families of three or four children were not uncommon. Free of debilitating fear, they often were able to bring their babies to crowning with little fuss, and were anesthetized only in time for the doctor to arrive and extract the baby with forceps. Those who subscribed to the philosophy of natural birth were free of fear, free of anesthesia and, for the most part, free of the discomfort of labor. If you are like most pregnant women, you will find that as you move through these days and months of pregnancy, you will be met with a whole new set of feelings, anxieties, doubts, questions, decisions and tasks that you never had to consider before. Some of these will center on your pregnancy, labor and birthing, but there may be more that will cause you to look at the many transformational experiences that bringing a baby into your life will present. This is natural. As
