Maggie Stiefvater''s first novel features a potent mix of dangerous faeries and uprequited love!

New York Times bestselling author Maggie Stiefvater''s first novel is a powerful fantasy featuring dangerous faeries, otherwordly music and unrequited love.

Sixteen-year-old Deirdre Monaghan is a painfully shy but prodigiously gifted musician. She''s about to find out she''s also a cloverhand — one who can see faeries. When a mysterious boy enters her ordinary suburban life, seemingly out of nowhere, Deirdre finds herself infatuated. Trouble is, the enigmatic and conflicted Luke turns out to be a gallowglass — a soulless faerie assassin — and Deirdre is meant to be his next mark. An equally hunky — and equally dangerous — dark faerie soldier named Aodhan is also stalking Deirdre. Sworn enemies, Luke and Aodhan each have a deadly assignment from the Faerie Queen. Namely, kill Deirdre before her music captures the attention of the Fae and threatens the Queen''s sovereignty. Deirdre has to decide if Luke''s feelings towards her are real, or only a way to lure her deeper into the world of Faerie.

Caught in the crossfire with Deirdre is James, her wisecracking but loyal best friend. Deirdre had been wishing her life weren''t so dull, but getting trapped in the middle of a centuries-old faerie war isn''t exactly what she had in mind.

Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fairy Tales Aren't Always Happy Endings These books didn't catch my attention until after I had read the rest of Maggie Stiefvater works, including the Shiver trilogy and Scorpio Races, so you have to remember that this was her original series and it's hard to read her work as she has grown as an author and then turn back to the beginning and expect the same sort of writing. Maggie still produces a good book filled with characters worth rooting for and romances to make you giddy. Deirdre while incredibly gifted musically doesn't see herself as any different than the average teenage girl, she is extremely shy, and lives a normal life with her best friend James. That is until she runs into Luke, gorgeous, musically gifted and intensely mysterious. Instantly her world begins to change the edges of the world she is used to begin to fray and mysterious things start to appear- like four leaf clovers and evil freckled boys. It doesn't take long for Deirdre to figure out that she is a cloverhand, a faerie seer. Soon Deirdre is plunged into a dangerous world where the one person she is falling for is the one person she should be avoiding. Struggling with this new found world she seems to have fallen into Deirdre struggles to find balance between James and the life she had and Luke and the fantastical world of the "Good Neighbors" and all the consequences that her choice will bring. As her world spirals out of control Deirdre must quickly decide who is friend or foe and what it means to be in love.
