Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A bit dark, but very compelling Anyone who has ever been kept awake at night by mental reflections on the past will enjoy this quick-reading novel set in rural New Brunswick in 1943. The protagonist and narrator is an intelligent but hard-pressed middle-aged First World War veteran whose life has unfolded in anything but the manner he seems to have planned. One minor quibble is the dialogue put into the mouths of some characters, which could have been more plausibly spoken by rural American southerners than rural Maritimers; as a tenth-generation Maritimer I can attest to that personally. This does not detract from the tale though, and at this price I highly recommend it.
