Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fabulous fictional Detective stories As usual, this was a very enjoyable series of stories involving the world's most famous fictional detective: Sherlock Holmes. My favorites of the lot were "The Yellow Face", "The Stockbroker's Clerk", "The Musgrave Ritual" and "The Naval Treaty". Of course, as good as they were, the growing anticipation of reading "The Final Solution" was almost unbearable. In the last story of Watson's "memoir" (Sherlock's supposed "endgame") had Holmes tangling, finally, with the devious James Moriarty in what was probably Arthur Conan Doyle's most talked about story of his career. Sadly, I didn't care for "The Final Solution" at all. It seemed out of character for Sherlock to be on the run from the criminal mastermind, even if the final solution was, as he described in his last letter to Watson, inevitable. However, if you are looking for a great interpretation of "The Final Solution", watch the BBC's TV series "Sherlock" starring Benedict Cumberpatch & Martin Freeman. In the sixth episode of the TV version (smartly entitled "The Reichenbach Fall"), Cumberpatch's Sherlock is much more engaged with the twisted Moriarty, and the ending is THOROUGHLY engaging and satisfying. However, fans of the literature will surely still enjoy "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" as they would most of his other adventures.
