Agnes returned to dreamland as soon as her head hit the pillow. With a start just before midnight, she woke. Sitting upright to glimpse the bedside clock's LED numbers, she called, "Emily, are you awake? Did you hear something?"

Crawling into bed, she flicked off the light, but, unlike Emily, could not drop off to sleep. Wide awake, she spent the next two hours mentally plotting, planning and editing a scenario based on the recent noises outside both the window and the stateroom door. 'I could use it in my next play,' she thought, eyes finally closing.

Aboard ship again from a day's excursion, Agnes deposited purchases in their stateroom and pondered the odd sounds from the night before. Elbows resting on window table, she squinted at a sliver view of the port, wedged between the bottom of the life boat and the top of the Promenade Deck railing. Sliding the window open, craning for a fuller view, she darted an accusing eye at the lifeboat. 'Not much better, could you sway a bit more?'

Attention diverted by a dirty, white rag hanging over the rim of the life boat, she watched curiously as the fabric slid down the side as if someone were pushing it out of the boat. The rag, caught against a dangling rope showing red blotches around a green shape on the soiled white background. 'A tie-dyed tee shirt?'
