Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Strength in Unity The second book in the New Jedi Order provided me with an interesting read; I found the novel to be very informative but not all that exciting. Michael A. Stackpole, author of the X-Wing series, and companion novel ‘I Jedi’ for the Jedi Academy Trilogy has always kept me turning pages, but not this time. When alien invaders known as the Yuuzhan Vong attack without warning, the New Republic is thrust into an impossible war. Refugees from the planet Durbillion lead by Leia Organa Solo and X-Wing pilot Gavin Darklighter encounter many problems as they try to find a safe haven while Luke and his wife are put to the tests by unknown forces. Having thoroughly enjoyed Stakpole’s previous novels, I came into Onslaught expecting to be blown away. While I wasn’t blown away as I had hoped, I did acquire a whole new knowledge of the Force, the workings of the New Republic and the alien invaders as well as great character interactions. The novel was a very informative read – focusing on limits and how teamwork is invaluable. Michael Stackpole is a great Star Wars novelist - he has an eye to catch every great ascpect in such a vast universe. Onslaught was a good read and I look forward to the next one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stackpole is Star Wars Not too many people have a grasp on the Star Wars universe like Stackpole. His books are phenomenal. If you havn't read "Rouge Squadren" and "I, Jedi", do it NOW! Where Salvatore dropped the ball in Vector Prime, Stackpole scooped it up and scored. This is so fast paced and exciting you'll never put this book down. Plus, the focus is on Corran Horn, who, IMO, is the best character in the Star Wars universe today.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely a must own book! Continuing the saga of the Yuuzhan Vong, this book picks up with Leia trying to get the Senate to deal with this new threat. However, they are not convinced, and assign an investigator to experience this proposed problem, and experience it he does! While the Jedi mourn the loss of one of their own, they have no time to waste as the Outer Rim worlds are being attacked! A pirate survivor is the key to battling these enemies who use weapons that cannot be detected both by the Force and by mechanics! Our favourite pilots make a comeback here, Wedge, Tycho, Gavin Darklighter, the Solo children, Mara, Luke and of course a re-vitalized Rogue Squadron containing all new characters! Defeating these invaders will require a combined effort of all worlds, and tactics that have never been thought of before! I thought this book was better than Vector Prime, as it has an amazing battle with my favourite character - Corran Horn.

Read from the Book

CHAPTER TWO Snug in the X-wing simulator cockpit, Colonel Gavin Darklighter, Rogue Squadron''s commanding officer, flicked his right thumb against the ring he wore on that hand. Apprehension gripped him, but he knew there was no sense in stalling a second longer. He glanced over his shoulder at the R2-Delta astromech droid sitting behind him. "Okay, Catch, run the simulation designated ''skipchaser.''" The little gold-and-white droid tootled pleasantly, and the simulator cockpit came alive with lights and data scrolling on the primary screen. Despite the years of refits the little droid had undergone in Gavin''s service--including requisite memory wipes and programming upgrades--it always greeted him with a brief summary of the weather on Tatooine and Coruscant. Gavin appreciated that little bit of pleasantry, which is why he''d not traded the droid in for a newer model--though the Delta upgrade had been most welcome for speeding up navigational computations. The biggest change in his relationship with the droid had been its name. In the early days he''d called it Jawaswag, figuring that any Jawa would love to have the droid. Later, after the Thrawn crisis, a group of Jawas had tried to steal Jawaswag, but the droid had fended them off and actually hurt one. From that point forward Gavin had taken to calling the droid Toughcatch, which had just become shortened to Catch. The simulator''s visual field filled with stars and then an asteroid belt, into which Gavin guid
