From the Jacket

One of the world''s great letter writers, Madame de Sevigne (1626-96) has bequeathed an extraordinarily vivid picture of life in the France of Louis XIV.

About the Author

Mme de Sevigne is the great correspondent of French literature. Her letters, written mostly to her daughter from 1648 to 1696, offer both a fascinating depiction of the France of Louis XVI (many of the great of the age are described) and a mine of subtle psychological reflections on human behavior. The portrait they offer of the complex relationship between mother and daughter is compelling, and their style (which influenced many writers, including Proust) is marked by clarity and elegance.

From Our Editors

Madame de Sevigne, one of the world’s best letter writers, paints a vibrant portrait of life in Louis XIV’s France. French society and literary circle figure, Madame de Sevigne was friends with Madame de la Fayette and La Rochefoucauld, went to Corneille’s, Racine’s and Moliere’s plays, vigilantly watched court scandal and King’s mistresses’ intrigues, and traced political events. Selected Letters features these topics and many others including people, places, conversations, personal and family concerns. Filled with lively humour and vivid description, these letters comprise an engaging memoir of her life and times.
