About the Author

Kathleen O'Neal Gear was born on October 29, 1954 in Tulare, Calif. She attended several colleges in California, including University of California at Los Angeles, and has held several positions in the fields of archeology and paleontology. She married W. Michael Gear in 1982, and they have collaborated on a series of books for young adults. The theme of these books is ancient civilizations, and the titles include People of the Wolf, People of the Fire, and People of the Sea. In their first book, People of the Wolf, twin brothers are born of parents from rival tribes. They are raised in the tribe of one parent and must deal with the conflict of belonging. These books, along with those of author Jean Auel, helped to revitalize an interest in early civilizations. Gear has also written several books by herself. The titles in her Women of the West series are particularly noteworthy because they focus on the importance of women in the history of the Old West. W.
