Rated 4 out of 5 by from Suspenseful series. Will their secrets get out?? Can't wait to find out! This is the first book in the YA series by Sara Shepard which was originally published in October 2006 by HarperCollins. The story is about 5 best friends. Alison is somewhat the leader of the group. She is the one that the other girls go to and tell their deepest and darkest secrets which no one else knows about. During a sleepover one summer something happens and Alison walks out never to be seen again. After her disappearance the other girls have nothing holding them together so they each go their separate ways. Fast forward three years and the girls are now juniors in high school each living their own lives. • Emily is a dedicated swimmer who is shy and sweet. She becomes friends with Maya the girl living in Ali’s old house, and struggles with her bisexuality. • Spencer is extremely competitive in everything she does. She strives for perfection and competes against everyone especially her sister who seems to always be one step ahead. • Hanna is the nice girl who becomes much prettier when Ali disappears. She struggles with insecurities of her appearance and turns to bulimia/anorexia to ensure she stays in control of her weight. She becomes friends with Mona a girl with whom she made a pact to become beautiful/popular after Ali is out of the picture • Aria is artistic and independent. After Ali disappears her family leaves for Iceland while her father is on sabbatical. When she returns to Rosewood she feels like she doesn’t fit in anymore. When the girls start receiving mysterious text messages and emails signed ‘A’ which reveal their inner secrets. They start wondering if Alison could be back and how they will keep their secrets hidden. Who is A?? Will everyone’s secrets be revealed?? I really enjoyed the book. It was fast paced and a very quick read you could finish in a sitting. I like that each chapter was written from one girl’s point of view. I liked getting to know each girl and I think that this is a great introduction to the story, the characters and the series! I’m very late to this party since the first book has been out now for six years and I don’t know why I put it off for so long. There are currently 11 books in the series and I can’t wait to continue with the books and see what happens next. There is so much suspense and excitement surrounding the story I need to know who ‘A’ is. After I finished the book I watched the pilot of the TV show which originally aired on June 8, 2010. The television series is loosely based on the book series. The pilot follows the plot of the entire first book. I really enjoyed the show. I thought it was a great adaptation of the book. I didn’t think that the characters looked like they do on the covers or as they are described in the novels, but I got past that pretty quickly since the storyline was very similar. Of course the show left off with a cliffhanger that intrigues me to want to watch the next episodes. I will eventually watch more when I have read a few more books. There are already three seasons of the show so they must be doing something right because people are watching it. I can’t wait to continue with the series. Have you read any of these books? What do you think of the books? Television series?? Check out my blog for more: http://bibliophilesisters.wordpress.com

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Captivating novel Alison DiLaurentis, manipulative "Queen Bee" of Rosewood Day, rules with an iron fist over her clique: Spencer Hastings, a perfectionist always trying to outdo her over-achiever sister; Hanna Marin, overweight and so desperate to be popular that she bends to Alison's will; Aria Montgomery, a former outsider; and Emily Fields, a competitive swimmer from a conservative family. But before the start of the 8th grade, Ali disappears after getting into an argument with Spencer at a sleepover with the other girls, and the group falls apart. Three years later, Aria, back from Iceland more confident, beautiful, and more stylish than ever reluctantly returns to town to find former nerd Mona Vanderwaal and a newly-thin Hanna to be the new social leaders of Rosewood Day. Soon Aria begins an affair with her English teacher, Spencer falls for her sister's boyfriend, Emily is in love with the new girl at school, and Hanna not only shoplifts, but also makes herself throw up to stay thin. Suddenly a mysterious person called "A" threatens to reveal the girls' secrets from past and present, including ones they thought only Alison knew; and one in particular that the girls refer to as "the Jenna thing." Ultimately, Alison's body is found cemented in her former back yard, and the DiLaurentis family holds a funeral for Alison in Rosewood. By the book's end, the identity of "A" remains unknown. I read the whole series and I can't stop reading these books, I love the fact that it is really realistic and the author makes us guess who the murderer is throughout the book. My favorite character is Spencer because she's the one who's always investigating to discover who is the killer. This book is mostly for young adults girls who like high suspense books.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Who do you trust with your darkest secrets? "Three may keep a secret, if two of them are dead." -Benjamin Franklin. The first book in the series, Pretty Little Liars, is about five best friends - Emily, Aria, Hanna, Spencer and Alison. Alison is the girl everyone loves, but secretly hates because they’re envious. She is what you could call the secret keeper of the clique, the one that holds the deepest and darkest secrets of each of the girls that nobody else knows and that they wouldn't dare share with another person. During a sleepover in seventh grade, something happens, Alison has walked out the door after a fight and their best friend has disappeared. Rosewood doesn’t seem so picture perfect anymore… Fast forward a few years later and the four girls are now juniors in high school at Rosewood Day. They have different social groups and none of them have talked since the disappearance of Alison. What brings them together again? Nothing they would have ever guessed. They're all receiving secret messages from an anonymous sender who goes by -A. Not just any messages though - but their secrets that vanished with their best friend and things that are going on in their lives today that they would rather keep hidden. Emily is testing the bounds of her new friendship with Maya, Aria is doing a little extra credit for English with her teacher, Hanna had vanity insanity and went too far for perfection and old habits are hard to break, and Spencer is getting a little too close to what isn't hers which is her sister's boyfriend. Unless the girls do exactly what -A says, their secrets will become everyone’s news. Who is -A? Why are they doing this? Did their best friend, Alison, come back? What exactly is the big Jenna secret? These are all of the things that are itching to be answered. Read and find out. This series is for teenage girls and found in the YA section, but I’m out of my teens and still enjoy them a lot. It a light, fun and easy read that you can definitely read in one sitting because you don't want to put it down until you've found everything out to tie up all the loose ends of the story. Pretty Little Liars has drama and cliffhangers that keep you on your toes and at the edge of your seat. Next book is Flawless.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You won't be able to put it down!! This is one of my favorite books of all time! The only reason i bought it is because I'd run out of books and needed a quick read, but then i got hooked! If you love books with lots of suspense and intrigue, you'll love this one! One warning, however, if you're addicted to the show, it doesn't correspond the the "T". I would definitly reccomend reading it!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from YA doesn't get much better! PRETTY LITTLE LIARS by Sara Shepard PRETTY LITTLE LIARS is some of the best YA writing I've read. I loved this book! The characters are amazing, not to mention layered in scandal. The drama, the scandals, the secrets, all keep you wanting more. Could there be any better mysteries or cliffhangers in this book? No, not really. It's driving me crazy not knowing who A is; of course I have my suspicions, but it seems that just about anything can, and will, happen. PRETTY LITTLE LIARS has an incredible story, wonderful writing, scandalous characters, and edge-of-your-seat turn of events time and time again. This series has it all, and I will definitely be reading more of it! I highly recommend it! :) "Three may keep a secret, if two of them are dead." -Benjamin Franklin Overall Opinion: A+ Check out my blog for more reviews and assorted book ramblings! http://kaylasbookcase.blogspot.com/

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hot dramatic girls + dirty little secrets + a fistful of mystery = me completely hooked Pretty Little Liars is a teenage girl drama series and it really blew my expectations out of the water. It has become one of my favourite guilty pleasure reads. Its not even in my usual genre that I like to stick to... no fangs or blood sucking, just catty girls who do all the things that only cross your mind but never act on. Pretty little liars revolves around a group of five girls: Alison, Spencer, Emily, Aria and Hanna. Alison is your traditional perfect teenage girl that everyone loves and everyone wants to be. But like every other girl in that class, they usually come equipped with a manipulative and selfish side. Spencer is the overachiever. Emily is the confused tomboy. Aria is the eclectic soul searcher and Hanna is the insecure girl who transforms to witch. This tight knit group of girls suffers through a shocking disappearance of the one girl and best friend they all idolize, Alison. With Alison missing, the girls all go their separate ways to avoid the sadness and fear of finding out what happened to Allison, and shamed that any of their dirty little secrets will get out. Three years passes without any sign of what happened to Allison. Things go even more downhill for the once-before-best friends. All taboo lines get crossed, which makes for such great greedy reading. There’s lusting after a sibling’s significant other, student teacher boundaries crossed, sexual orientation confusion and so much more that makes your jaw drop sometimes. The best part is that everyone acts on their feelings, and not much goes unsaid where raw human desires are concerned. There’s only one problem, even with Alison missing, there’s still someone around watching without being seen and holding the key to everyone’s secrets. That anonymous person, “A,” starts to throw eerie threats to Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily. They get so incredibly spooked by it since its only information that Allison could have known. Was Allison really still alive and tormenting them or had she blabbed their life ruining secrets around to the wrong ears? Great start to a series, with mystery, humor and loads of drama that carries its own charm. I’m pretty sure it’ll hook anyone who’s a teenage girl, or someone of any age still in touch with your inner teenager. Although, I’m happy I didn’t have to deal with these kind of girls in my teens, but I’m probably not the only one that would have to admit you have all those naughty thoughts with your hormones running fun and wild. Its such a great guilty pleasure book for all types of females. I’m hooked and can’t wait for the show to start.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from !!!~AWSOME~!!! This book was excellent and i enjoyed every bit of it. I loved the tail of four girls and thier secrets, and a points in the book i had to put it down because i felt like i was in it. Every chapter there was a new secret and a new mysterie. And every time they recieved a new email or text it added to the suspence and at the same time it created a new mysterie. I recomend this book to people who like somewhat scary novels and tons of gossip. I only have seven letters for this novel. A~M~A~Z~I~N~G !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely great! So, I just used the example that they give you. But I actually thought that this was a really good series. I couldn't put the books down, and I read all 4 in about a week and then went out and bought the fifth. The series is quite riveting. The books are unpredictable and I enjoyed trying to guess at what would happen next, and of course, I was almost always wrong. I really enjoyed this series and recommend it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A page turner, really interesting and a great start This book really kept me turning the pages. It was so interesting, especially when they started receiving the messages with information that only they had shared with Alison. It certainly did give off an air of paranoia and it was a bit on the creepy side. I also liked how one secret led to another, and to another to the point where everything is layered with secrecy. The girls do share one big one though called "The Jenna Thing" which is not really wholly explained, but from the small bits of information you get, it does seem like a real big ugly one. Of all the girls in the book, I would say I like Hanna the most. At times I really do feel sorry for her as I don't think she really knows who she really is yet and I sympathize with her. I do feel sorry for Spencer as well, although she did ask for it and brought it on herself. However it's her family I really dislike since they do treat Spencer like dirt. The characters in the book aren't really that deep or well rounded, but then again this book is meant to be a light fast read and really all you want is to get to the bottom of the plot, not worry about character development. The plot is well done and very fast, it kept you going and kept you turning the pages until the very end, and even then it leaves off at a cliffhanger ending that makes you want to ask for more. The only thing I would have to dislike though, is the designer label name dropping that happens. It didn't occur much in the beginning but it started to become a more common thing through the end. That bugs me. It bugged me the most when for the second time in my life a bloody thong was labelled (and it's the same brand name too!) I wonder if both authors know each other and share tips on which kind of designer labels to add to their novels? hmm. I'm really hoping it's not going to be an issue in the second book because as in the Blood Blood series, I dropped reading them because of the excessive designer label description (that's one of the reasons why I dropped the series). I'm praying it won't happen for this series. I really do have high hopes for this one, as it grabbed my attention, I loved it for the mystery and the creepiness and I really want to know about The Jenna Thing. Overall, designer labelling aside, it was a great page turner and I recommend this book for those that want an interesting YA read that can be finished in a day.
