Pride And Prejudice

by Austen

May 1, 2014 | Trade Paperback

Pride And Prejudice is rated 5 out of 5 by 3.
Next to the exhortation at the beginning of Moby-Dick, "Call me Ishmael," the first sentence of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice must be among the most quoted in literature. And certainly what Melville did for whaling Austen does for marriage--tracing the intricacies (not to mention the economics) of 19th-century British mating rituals with a sure hand and an unblinking eye. As usual, Austen trains her sights on a country village and a few families--in this case, the Bennets, the Philips, and the Lucases. Into their midst comes Mr. Bingley, a single man of good fortune, and his friend, Mr. Darcy, who is even richer. Mrs. Bennet, who married above her station, sees their arrival as an opportunity to marry off at least one of her five daughters.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Marvelous I love this book. For a classic it is really easy to read although I can see why some people might find it a little bit dry in certain spots, but nothing you can't get over. As soon as you get used to the old fashioned way of speaking and overall way of life you get completely lost in the lives of the characters and you never want to get found again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A timeless classic I enjoyed reading Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" because it allowed me to escape to the countryside of England. The genera of the book immersed me into its etiquette, language, and courting and Mr Darcy is also an added bonus.
