"New York Times"?bestselling author Karen Robards weaves a complex tale of a political conspiracy at the highest level of government, with a steamy love affair between protector and prey.
When rookie lawyer Jessica Ford gets the call from her boss, John Davenport, the senior partner at the illustrious law firm for which she works, she can tell he is well on his way to being drunk. He needs Jess to meet First Lady Annette Cooper, for whom Davenport is a personal lawyer, at a Washington, D.C., hotel. Jess is thrilled: this high- profile assignment must mean that she's earned her boss's trust and she's on her way to bigger things. But unfortunately, bigger isn?t always better.
Jess doesn?t remember much?only that in the course of the late-night meeting with Annette Cooper, she ended up in the backseat of a car, speeding off into the darkness. All Jess knows is that the car crashed en route, and the other three passengers were killed, including the First Lady. Badly injured, Jess is the only survivor of what is trumpeted around the world as a tragic accident.
Although she has no memory about the events leading up to the accident, Jess is still bothered by one question: Was it really an accident? The Secret Service agent on the case, Mark Ryan, gets the feeling that Jess is hiding something. As his suspicions grow, Jess's world starts falling apart. First, she is brutally attacked in the hospital, barely escaping with her life. Then her boss dies under questionable circumstances. In fact, everyone who might possibly know the details about the First Lady's last few hours starts turning up dead. And then Jess understands: If she remembers that night, she?ll be dead too.
Terrified and certain that the First Lady's death was no accident, Jess has only Mark Ryan to turn to. . . .

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! I have read several books by this author before and liked all of them so I thought that I would give this one a try. I had it for a bit before I read it. Once I started reading, I didn't know why I hadn't picked it up sooner. I loved the chemistry between the characters and the pace was quick. I didn't want to put it down. Once I finished, I went out and purchased a couple of other Robards novels. I highly recommend it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from High on Suspense, but lacking in the romance department Karen Robards is one of my favourite authors and writes the kind of books I love filled with suspense and romance. I must admit to being disappointed with Pursuit after eagerly awaiting the paperback release (so glad I didn’t shell out the bucks for the hardcover version). This book was an ok read for me, once I started it. Robards set the stage so that I wanted and needed to finish the book so I could find out who the bad guys were and what they were trying to cover up. It was the journey to the end that left me wanting more. Up and coming lawyer Jessica Ford finds herself the sole survivor of a suspicious motor vehicle accident in which the First Lady of the United States is killed along with her chauffeur and a Secret Service Agent. Mark Ryan is the head of the Secret Service assigned to investigate the case and is actually the one to discover Jessica shaken and bruised, lying in the brush where she was thrown from the vehicle during the crash. He has lots of questions for Jessica; unfortunately her memories about the details leading up to the crash are sketchy at best or that's her story and she's sticking to it. As Jessica lies exposed and vulnerable in a hospital bed, an attempt is made on her life to silence her for good on the off chance she does have any memories regarding the crash because as it turns out - it was not an accident but murder. This is the point in the book where I found it started to drag. I wanted Jessica out of the hospital and the action to pick up between her and Mark. Unfortunately Mark, although he has met Jessica on several occasions, doesn’t even remember her (her law firm represented the First Lady). Jessica on the other hand has always noticed Mark and had a small crush on the hunky Secret Service agent. This should have been the first indication that the romance was going to take a back seat to the suspense element of this book. There was just no chemistry between Jessica and Mark over 100 pages into the book. If you want to read an exceptional Karen Robards book I recommend Night Magic, one of the best books I read in 2009 (although it was a re-release, I sure don’t recall reading it). If you are looking for a mainly suspenseful tale with not a lot of romance, then you will probably enjoy Pursuit
