We know by now that Scaredy Squirrel only feels safe when he''s at home in his nut tree, with his defenses, his emergency kit and his back?up plans at the ready. So even though the sun is shining and it''s time for a vacation, Scaredy does not want to go to the beach -- that vast, frightening place where a squirrel could get stranded. (Not to mention other hazards such as sea monsters, falling coconuts, seagulls, pirates and lobsters.) Instead, Scaredy builds his own safe beach getaway under his nut tree, complete with germ-free inflatable pool, artificial beach scenery, a flashlight and a plastic flamingo. Still, the lure of the genuine beach is strong -- even a dedicated homebody such as Scaredy can''t resist it forever. Can his back?up plans save him from its perils? Will his No.65 sunscreen protect his delicate complexion?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great instalment to the series! Oh Scaredy Squirrel, what are you up to now? Now, when I read this instalment of the fantastic Scaredy Squirrel series, by Canadian author Melanie Watt, I could help but agree with the tiny squirrel: I would much rather prefer to stay at home by myself, on my own private deck in the sunshine, than be amidst masses of people at the beach. Of course, Alberta doesn’t really have beaches–at least, not like the ones you’d find in California or Hawaii. And our summer isn’t nearly as hot to sunbathe, anyway, but I digress. It’s hard to go out there and have fun with people and, if you’re like me, you worry about it beforehand, but once you’re in the crowd and having fun, you realize it wasn’t so bad after all. The same thing goes for Scaredy Squirrel. And, of course, aren’t we all looking for that perfect shell? This is the third book in the Scaredy Squirrel collection and teaches a wonderful lesson on how to just get out and do it! I can’t wait to see what Scaredy Squirrel is up to next. Melanie Watt is a great talent and I hope she keeps releasing great stories like this one!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another exceptional Scaredy book Jake's Review: Everybody in my house loves Scaredy Squirrel and me and Scaredy have a lot in common that is why I love him so much. He actually is scared of WAY more things than me which makes me feel better. I like this one a lot because he is at the beach which is a place I like to go too. I really like the illustrations in this one because they are silly and funny. It is really easy to read -- I even think the midget might be able to recognize some words and he is really slow (Mom's Note: nice sibling love there people). I ask mom to buy these for me even though they are way below my reading level. I think I will try reading this to Jesse tonight, I think he will like the pictures. Plus maybe than Mom will let me play with her scaredy squirrel puppet -- she says she bought it for me but I really don't believe her. Jake's Rating: 10/10 Mom's Review: Yes I must confess I bought the Scaredy puppet for myself, but I let the kids play with it so that makes me a good mom. This is another wonderful Scaredy Squirrel story with my favorite high maintenance rodent. Adults and children will both enjoy another day in the life of this adorable, quirky squirrel as he learns to live with his issues. The artwork is adorable with plenty to look at and something new to discover everytime. The storyline is sweet, honest and extremely helpful to kids who have some unusual issues (It helped Jake learn to laugh at his issues and find ways to work through them). This is one I highly recommend to parents of kids who have anxiety issues as these issues are dealt with in a sensitive yet funny way. I wish I could articulate how wonderful these books are. Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this -- not to mention all the rest of the series -- you will THANK me. Mom's Rating: 10/10

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Scaredy is back! Scaredy is back, and this time, he's decided to make a little private faux-beach near his tree (all the safer, as it has no pirates, sea monsters, crabs, or jellyfish) but to do so, he decides he needs a sea-shell to hold to his ear to listen to the ocean. Off he goes - and as always, his plans don't quite go as he expected. Delightful as ever, Scaredy is a joy to watch react - such simple drawings really do evoke a fantastic range of little squrrel emotions! Just don't forget to bring a camera (it scares away the camera shy sea monsters)!
