Random House Publishing Group | June 21, 2011 | Hardcover

Smokin' Seventeen: A Stephanie Plum Novel is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 5.

Where there’s smoke there’s fire, and no one knows this better than New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum.

Dead bodies are showing up in shallow graves on the empty construction lot of Vincent Plum Bail Bonds. No one is sure who the killer is, or why the victims have been offed, but what is clear is that Stephanie’s name is on the killer’s list.

Short on time to find evidence proving the killer’s identity, Stephanie faces further complications when her family and friends decide that it’s time for her to choose between her longtime off-again-on-again boyfriend, Trenton cop Joe Morelli, and the bad boy in her life, security expert Ranger. Stephanie’s mom is encouraging Stephanie to dump them both and choose a former high school football star who’s just returned to town. Stephanie’s sidekick, Lula, is encouraging Stephanie to have a red-hot boudoir “bake-off.” And Grandma Bella, Morelli’s old-world grandmother, is encouraging Stephanie to move to a new state when she puts “the eye” on Stephanie.

With a cold-blooded killer after her, a handful of hot men, and a capture list that includes a dancing bear and a senior citizen vampire, Stephanie’s life looks like it’s about to go up in smoke.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best yet! I loved this book. The last few have been mediocre and boring but this picks the pace up again. Fans of book 8 will like this one for the same reasons! There were some needed plot twists and variations on the Morelli/ Ranger theme. I am actually looking forward to the next installment!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun and Games with Stephanie and the Gang Smokin’ Seventeen was what I expect from Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. Funny and entertaining, even if the mystery is somewhat predictable. Afterall, you don’t read Stephanie Plum books for the plot – you read them for the quirky characters and the comical situations in which Stephanie constantly finds herself. Grandma Mazur, former ho Lula and all the others are back, but there are new criminals to hunt down and, of course, a couple crazies who want to kill Stephanie. Joe Morelli and Ranger are in the book a lot, both wreaking havoc with Stephanie’s overactive hormones. Best of all, Explosive Eighteen is due out in November so we won't have to wait as long as usual for our next romp with Stephanie. 2011-028

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stephanie's got her groove back For those familiar with the series, I'm sure you'll agree that the strongest part of the series was in the first ten to twelve with the last two or three books in the series being less than satisfying. But seventeen brings back that familiar zing that made me fall in love with this series to begin with. I read this book in one helping and it is a quick read, but the comedy was funny rather than slapstick, the relationships actually moved rather than being stuck in neutral and the storyline flowed naturally rather than feeling forced to fit the mold of a Plum escapade. The hamster is definately off the hamster wheel here though I would have liked to see more characterization and development to show other facets of the characters as well as the internal struggle of Stephanie's heart. The new man is a catalyst that kicks Stephanie into assessing her life, loves and her future but the storyline is driven by the action rather than the characters or conflicts which was an opportunity that I would have liked to see developed. All in all, a satisfying read. So, if you're looking for light hearted fun that makes you laugh and lets you get lost in the story then I highly recommend seventeen.

Read from the Book

ONE My Grandma Mazur called me early this morning. "I had a dream," Grandma said. "There was this big horse, and it could fly. It didn''t have wings. It just could fly. And the horse flew over top of you, and started dropping road apples, and you were running around trying to get out of the way of the road apples. And the funny thing was you didn''t have any clothes on except a red lace thong kind of underpants. Anyways, next thing a rhinoceros flew over you, and he was sort of hovering over top your head. And then I woke up. I got a feeling it means something." "What?" I asked. "I don''t know, but it can''t be good." And she disconnected. So that''s how my day started. And to tell you the truth the dream pretty much summed up my life. My name is Stephanie Plum. I work as a bond enforcer for my cousin Vinnie''s bail bonds office, and I live in an uninspired, low-rent, three-story, brick-faced chunk of an apartment building on the edge of Trenton, New Jersey. My second-floor apartment is furnished with my relatives'' cast-offs. I''m average height. I have an okay shape. I''m pretty sure I''m averagely intelligent. And I know for sure I have a crummy job. My shoulder-length curly brown hair is inherited from the Italian side of the family, my blue eyes from the Hungarian side of the family, and I have an excellent nose that''s a gift from God. Good thing he gave me the nose before he found out I wasn''t the world''s best Catholic. It was early September and unseasonably hot. I
