The long-anticipated sequel to themillion-copy bestselling novel Wicked

Ten years after the publication of Wicked, beloved novelist Gregory Maguire returns at last to the land of Oz. There he introduces us to Liir, an adolescent boy last seen hiding in the shadows of the castle after Dorothy did in the Witch. Bruised, comatose, and left for dead in a gully, Liir is shattered in spirit as well as in form. But he is tended at the Cloister of Saint Glinda by the silent novice called Candle, who wills him back to life with her musical gifts.

What dark force left Liir in this condition? Is he really Elphaba's son? He has her broom and her cape -- but what of her powers? Can he find his supposed half-sister, Nor, last seen in the forbidding prison, Southstairs? Can he fulfill the last wishes of a dying princess? In an Oz that, since the Wizard's departure, is under new and dangerous management, can Liir keep his head down long enough to grow up?

For the countless fans who have been dazzled and entranced by Maguire's Oz, Son of a Witch is the rich reward they have awaited so long.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth the read. Not as good as wicked, but well worth the read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wicked Read. Fans of Grogory Maguire's "Wicked" will be more than pleased to return to his land of Oz in "Son of a Witch." Told in a combination of past and present timelines, the book furthers its parent novel's depiction of an almost believable alternate world. Mixing fantastic talking Animals, myth and magic with religion, politics and prison, Maguire paints an Oz that is at once darkly mysterious and beautifully captivating. The story follows Liir, the Witch of the West's supposed son, as he journeys from childhood into adulthood. Unsure of where he fits in the world following the Witch's curious demise, Liir stuggles to figure life out, meanwhile attempting to understand his complicated origins. Along the way he is aided, often too briefly, by a cast of fascinating new, as well as old familiar characters. I couldn't put it down!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous Story I loved Wicked and thought i'd try this book. Loved it, think it was even better than Wicked....definitely will read his others. I recommend this book to anyone, great story.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from He'd make Elphaba proud... I didn't expect to connect with the protagonist - but what Maguire does best is take characters of myth (or of his own making) and endears them to us; makes them flesh and blood, real, and oh so human. Its a coming of age story, a story about a boy try to fill a Witch's cape - it was a beautiful sequel (although, nothing quite compares to wicked!)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing I thought it would be difficult, no offence intended, to create a follow up novel to Wicked that would be as astonoshing as the original. However, I was proven wrong. Though I personally favour Wicked, I must say Son Of A Witch is an excellent novel. The story outlines and relates perfectly to the issues in the previous novel. Gregory Maguire manages to incorporate current themes into it. It was excellently written and beautifully crafted. It answers all the questions left behind from Wicked as well as it opens Pandora's box to a new series of questions and journeys that can be explored. Five thumbs up!
