AT THE CROSSROADS OF DEATH AND DESIRE, A WOMAN TASTES A PLEASURE NO MORTAL IS MEANT TO SURVIVE.

In the frozen Alaskan wilderness, former state trooper Jenna Darrow survives an unspeakable breach of body and soul. But with her narrow escape comes an even greater challenge. For strange changes are taking place within her, as she struggles to understand—and control—a new hunger. To do so, she will seek shelter in the Boston compound of the Order, an ancient race of vampire warriors whose very existence is shrouded in mystery. Perhaps the most mysterious of them all is Brock, a brooding, dark-eyed alpha male whose hands hold the power to comfort, heal . . . and arouse.

As she recovers under Brock’s care, Jenna finds herself drawn to the Order’s mission: to stop a ruthless enemy and its army of assassins from subjecting Earth to a reign of terror. Yet in spite of their resolve, a purely physical relationship without strings soon binds Brock and Jenna together with a desire fiercer than life and stronger than death itself—until a secret from Brock’s past and Jenna’s own mortality challenges their forbidden love to the ultimate trial by fire.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Taken By Midnight I absolutely loved this book. Brock and Jenna are magical together.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not so "taken" by this installment I'm giving this book 3/5 stars overall, and 3.5/5 for the last third of the book. While this booked picked up right where book Shades of Midnight ended, I really couldn't get into it. Jenna really irked me. She seemed totally ungrateful and continuously put herself in peril ... cue the rescue sequence starring Brock. Again, Brock was another member of the Order that we didn't really know much about until this book. But with very little back-story, and this book largely being about Jenna and her pity-party, it was hard to be terribly "taken" by him either. The last third of the book redeemed the read for me a bit. No real teaser at the end to prompt me on to book 9 but I'm working my way there anyway!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book Taken by Midnight is the 8th book in the amazing Midnight Breed series. This book takes place right after the ending of the previous book. (Spoiler for previous book). Last book the Ancient put something into Alex's friend Jenna and she started talking the language of the ancients when she was not comatose. This book follows Brock and Jenna. I wasn't all that interested in reading about Brock because he was never a interesting character. He was always just "there" in the background. Anyways, he feels an instant connection to Jenna and uses his ability to absorb pain to help her. The Order takes Jenna to their compound because they want to investigate what is going on with this human female. She is a different heroine because she is human and we have no clue what is happening with her. It's actually very frightening to think about what might be in her and what her future looks like. Everyone soon discovers that Jenna is changing and no one knows what will happen to her. While trying to cope with how much her life has changed, Jenna feels a strange connection and attraction to Brock. Jenna is a widow and lost her husband and daughter 4 years ago to a car accident. She is very weary of falling in love again and to fall for a vampire is even harder to imagine. This story was great. I was glued from page one until the end. It wasn't the usual love story that these books have been about. This book has so many mysteries and unanswered questions. The series seems to be going into another direction which is fantastic. This book ended but the story will continue, no doubt for a few books. I was not interested in this book before I read it and I that God that I opened the first page. This book was one of the most important and story changing in awhile. Fantastic!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it I love this series. My first was Tegan and then I read Dante and Lucan. I love all the stories but I would have to say that so far Rio was my favourite. I have been waiting since Tegan story to find out about Chase- Im always eager to find out little things about him in the other stories. And it kills me that Hunter gets his story first but I guess Lara Adrian is saving the best for last. Brock and Jenna's story was really great, I loved the mix...sooo hot. And i must admit, that the little hint of Hunter's character makes me very interested in his story. I would recommend this series to anyone, though i will admit that the repetition of their history in every book becomes boring and I skip over those parts.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Keeps the Story Going Taken by Midnight by Lara Adrian is the 8th book in her Midnight Breed series. Yes, this is a series about vampires, but it’s very unique. The vampires (or Breed as they prefer to be called) that exist in these books are descendants of an alien race that landed on Earth many many years ago. Okay, it may sound strange, but believe me when I say it’s pretty cool. There is ongoing story line about a Breed male named Dragos and his intent on being the most powerful of all the vampires. He wants to breed his own strong vampires and kill all of the existing strong vampires. This story line is the glue that sticks all of these books together. It’s very interesting to see how the Order (the Breed’s warriors) follows clues to Dragos’ whereabouts and figure out his plans and how in each book, a little bit of Draogs’ operation is taken down, with the ultimate goal of taking Dragos too. Even though each book focuses on the one plot line, there is always a second, slightly happier plot line. A romantic one, where two people meet and fall in love. *Aww…* This time around we see how Brock falls in love with Jenna. Brock is a warrior with the Order. He’s the strong and silent one. We really don’t learn too much about him in previous books. We only know that his special gift (the gift that is passed on from mother to Breed male) is that he can take away a person’s pain by touching them. We also know that he feels very protective of Jenna after the ordeal she suffered in “Shades of Midnight”, the last installment. Actually, even after this book, we don’t know too much about him. We know he is strong of character and very loyal. And he’s been staying away from love – actually, he says he’s “allergic” to relationships — but he just can’t stay away from Jenna. The real clincher here is that Jenna is Human! Jenna went through hell in the previous book. She’s left vulnerable, alone and scared. But she’s strong. She won’t let all this beat her. Her ordeal also left her with a little added “bonus”. I won’t get into it as not to spoil things, but I’m just gonna say Ew! She has a lot of changes to deal with and Brock is really helping her along. He’s a relative stranger but he becomes her rock. The love story wasn’t really passionate and all animal this time around. I found it was just sweet. Two very lonely people who carry a very heavy ‘blame burden’ who find each other and make each other happy. I really liked the twist where Jenna is a human instead of a Breedmate. A Breedmate is a woman who is born with the special gene that enables her to mate and bond with a Breed vampire. You can tell who is a Breedmate by the little birthmark she possesses. In the previous books, either these women knew what they were or they didn’t and they were thrust into the Breed’s world (pardon the pun…tee hee) Once mated, Breedmates can live indefinitely alongside their other halves. But Jenna being human…how would that all pan out? I mean, Brock and Jenna need a HEA since this is a romance novel. How would Lara pull this off? I like how it all worked out. And I actually like that we don’t have all the answers as far as Jenna is concerned. I really hope we are not left hanging and that we find out more about her in the next books. Book 9 will be titled “Deeper than Midnight” and it will be Hunter’s book. I can’t wait for this one. A Breed male born and bred to be an assassin now fighting on the ‘right’ side, never knowing affection or love. It has all the makings of a really sweet and tender love story. It’s due to hit stores June 28th 2011. (I know, June…*sigh*) I found “Taken by Midnight” to be a good continuation to the overall Midnight Breed story. I especially liked how the women were given a bigger story line this time around, because those Breedmates are more than just play things. They are strong and smart women that take care of business as much as their male counterparts.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Another Hot Breed! Like all the Breed series, I enjoyed this book. Lots of action, another sexy breed - Brock - and a strong herione - Jenna. Although I really enjoyed the story I was a little disappointed at how things ended. **** little spoiler ***** I would have like to learn more about Jenna's situation with her body, and the bond with her and Brock. Still a good book and can't wait for the next one!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My favourite Breed book so far! This series has never been one of my favourites. Maybe because it was the first series i read after BDB last year and compared the two too much, or maybe because it just didn't do it for me since i never really felt attached to the characters and the stories. Suffice to say, after Veil of Midnight which i read in April of 2009 and can barely remember, I took a break from the series. Fast forward, to early September 2010, I was trying to figure out what to read next and finally decided to read Reichen's book which had been lying around on my shelves collecting dust for a long time. I liked it, just enough to decide to read the following book: Shades of Midnight. In Shades of Midnight I finally began to really get into the story, and the characters. So when Taken By Midnight came out on Tuesday, I was actually pretty excited, although I do have to give Shades of Midnight a lot of credit for setting up this book so well. While we had already been introduced to Brock, the male lead in Taken, Shades introduced us to the lead female of Taken, Jenna, which I personally always appreciate. For me, introducing a new character prior to the books about them specifically, has always been something I prefer as their storyline feels less rushed. It's bad enough that most para-roms see the main couple profess their love for one another in record time, that when we have at least met the characters before their book, I simply seem to enjoy the book that much more. Jenna's character was also quite different from the standard female leads of this series. And to be quite frank, I liked what was happening to her and who she was becoming. While I'd like to elaborate, I fear I may spoil things for you, so I will refrain from saying anything and just say she was a refreshing change of pace for the "mate" characters of this series. On the flipside, Brock is Brock. He's written as this gorgeous, sexy, black man who knows how to bring a smile to any lady's face. I actually like how Adrian has given him a sense of humour. While I love my tortured, dark, brooding characters in these type of books, every once and a while I need one that's a little more laidback and who has the ability to crack a joke. Of course Brock has a past that isn't so light and fluffy, but its not even close to as dark as Adrian's upcoming book subjects: Hunter and Chase. I'm not going to lie though, having read the last and now this book, I'm rather excited for Hunter and Chase's stories. Those two most definitely fall in the mysterious, tortured, dark, brooding type category. Anyways, as we continue to learn about Brock and Jenna, we also learn more about Dragos and his quest for world domination (let's face it, he's not limited to controlling Breed anymore). While I felt this storyline fell a little on the light side of things in this book, there were still some great action sequences, and some big developments. While you'd think Brock is the big player in these particular moments, Jenna is actually the key character for the more crucial of them. Oh ya, she's awesome!! Actually all the ladies are awesome in this one. Adrian does a good job of involving the breedmates in the action. As usual when knee deep in a series, the details need to be kept at a minimum, therefore this is as much as I'm going to tell you so that I don't spoil anything. Overall, for the first time, I can say I really enjoyed a Breed book. It's still not one my favourite series' and has not cracked my top five but it's much higher on my overall list in para-rom, and if Adrian keeps delivering books like these, I'll keep on reading them. Hunter's book is next, and I really can't wait. I loved the few scenes he was in, and naturally they only made you want more. Like usual, now I wait... Enjoy!

Read from the Book

Chapter One Life . . . or death? The words drifted at her through the darkness. Detached syllables. The rough scrape of a flat, airless voice that reached into the heavy drowse of her mind and forced her to come awake, to listen. To make a choice. Life? Or death? She groaned against the cold plank floor beneath her cheek, trying to bar the voice—and the relentless decision it demanded—from her mind. This wasn’t the first time she’d heard these words, this question. Not the first time in the space of some endless hours that she’d peeled one heavy eyelid open in the frigid stillness of her cabin home and found herself looking into the terrible face of a monster. Vampire. “Choose,” the creature whispered thinly, the word drawn out in a slow hiss. He crouched over her where she lay, curled and shivering on the floor near the cold fireplace. His fangs glistened in the moonlight, razor sharp, lethal. The tips of them were still stained with fresh blood—her blood, drawn from the bite he’d made in her throat only moments before. She tried to get up, but couldn’t rouse her weakened muscles to so much as flex in response. She tried to speak, managed only a rasping moan. Her throat felt as dry as ash, her tongue thick and listless in her mouth. Outside, the Alaskan winter roared, bitter and unforgiving, filling her ears. No one to hear her screams, even if she’d tried. This creature could kill her in an instant. She didn&
