An epic saga of heart-stopping romance, devastating secrets, and dark magic . . . a world where everything you love can be washed away. The first book in the new series from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Fallen series

Everywhere Eureka goes he is there: Ander, a mysterious blond boy who tells her she’s in danger. Ander knows things about Eureka she doesn’t yet know herself, but not her darkest secret: ever since her mother drowned in a freak accident, Eureka wishes she were dead, too. She has little left that she cares about, just her friend, Brooks, and some heirlooms—a locket, a letter, a mysterious stone, and an ancient book about a girl who got her heart broken and cried an entire continent into the sea.

The haunting tale is more than a story. It’s real.

And Eureka’s life has far more evil undercurrents than she ever could have imagined.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Entertaining "Teardrop" by Lauren Kate is a fascinating story that centers around Eureka Boudreaux, a seventeen year old shattered by the death of her mother after a tragic accident and a failed suicide attempt, has few friends, an aversion to school and multiple psychiatric appointments. Her only solace in a world that no longer seems to have meaning is her friendship with Cat Ester a smart, boy-crazy, no-nonsense black girl and Noah Brooks, the likeable, mysterious, supportive boy she's known since childhood. As the story opens events unfold that sweep Eureka into a mystery that endangers not only her life but that of her family and friends. It begins with the reading of her mother's will where she's bequeathed a locket, a thunderstone and a mysterious book that has to be deciphered. After eliciting the help of a strange fortune teller Eureka uncovers a tale that's not only linked to an ancient romance and heartbreak but also to the fabled kingdom of Atlantis. At the same time her car is struck by a white truck driven by Ander, a strange, handsome boy with turquoise eyes who seems to know details of her life that she's never told anyone. Together, as they unravel clues to a prophecy where her existence may determine the fate of the world, Eureka and Ander form a bond of love that will be tested. This is a story of love, friendship and family relationships amid tragedy, death and despair. The plot at first is slow, but progresses quickly as the action heats up near the end. The characters are realistic and semi-complex with all their faults and weaknesses. Eureka shell-shocked by the loss of her mother alternates between overwhelming anger and fury to despair until a mystery challenges her emotionally and physically. Although guarded with others and scornful of her stepmother, she shows a protective, loving and considerate nature towards her stepsister and stepbrother. Noah Brooks, Eureka's childhood friend is loyal, compassionate and thoughtful, but transforms after near-fatal swimming accident becoming angry, mean and treacherous. Maya Cayce the rival for Noah's affection is a player; self-centered, spoiled and devious. Trenton Boudreaux is overly- protective but distant, loving his daughter but weak, unable to cope with her problems or moodiness. Rhoda Boudreaux is a stable and grounded woman who loves her twins, but is insensitive, demanding and intolerant towards her stepdaughter. Ander at first seems smug, tough and hard to read, but with love is kind and self-sacrificing. In future books some of these personalities could be further developed.  In some aspects the plot of this novel is weak, but overall it's entertaining and culminates in a titillating cliff-hanger. I have rated it low so that with further development in future novels that I have room to show a clear distinction. Overall though, it's a trilogy worth following and I look forward to the next book

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not what I was expecting I have loved Lauren Kate since I read Fallen years ago, so when I saw that she was writing another series I was really excited. I will say that I absolutely love this cover, it draws you to it, and it did the same for me when I first saw it. But I will say that the cover does not really depict what goes on inside the story, and I really wish that the "girl on the cover with a dress" thing would stop on YA covers because it does not help with understanding the plot. I am not going to say that I loved this book, because I didn't. The writing, as per usual was amazing and flawless. Lauren has a way of grabbing your attention and keeping you interested, and she did just that with this book. I loved the main character, she was spunky and damaged with the death of her mother. I also loved her relationship with her Father and Stepmother, because it was strained and a little infuriating to read, and I loved that. I also liked the love interest and how complicated it was. It was not the typical love story because one, there were two interest, and because both boys were shrouded in mystery. I did not know who to chose or who was better, but I also knew that both of these boys were hiding something and I really wanted to know what that was. Now, the biggest issue for me was the plot itself and the "reveal" at the end. Although an interesting story, to me it was way to out there because it made no sense to me. Her tears will rise the lost city of Atlantis? I mean seriously? I think I laughed when I read that because it just seemed so out of the norm. I am all for taking a myth and messing with it to make a great new story, but for me, Atlantis is one of the cursed ones that does not work as a retelling because it just doesn't make plausible sense. Overall, I enjoyed the story up until the end when everything was revealed. I felt like the Atlantis part ruined my overall feel of the book and I honestly do not know if I will read the rest of this series. But you never know, my feeling may change.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Another great one from Lauren Kate "Never Ever Cry" That is what Eureka's mother told her years ago and now she is gone and a part of Eureka is to. Dealing with the death of her Mother, an attempt suicide and a Father and Stepmother who don't understand her Eureka doesn't know where to turn until the day Ander hits her with his car and her whole world turns upside down. Soon she learns some interesting facts about herself and that her mother has been keeping these secrets from her and trying to prepare her for the rollercoaster that is now Eureka's life. "Teardrop" was a great book, I have been a fan of Lauren Kate since her first "Fallen" book came out, I really like the way she writes her stories and this was no exception, I found that the writing just flowed through the pages and I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen. The characters were really great as well, I thought Eureka was a solid lead and she had a great voice, I was able to sympathize and connect to her and really feel for her with all of her hard times. Ander was a good character as well, if a bit stalkerish but it worked for the story, I can't wait to see more of Brooks, there is so much to character it will be interesting to see his growth. The plot overall was amazing, it is a concept that is new and very different from her "Fallen" series and I can't wait to read more. Overall this book was great and I can't wait to find out what happens next, I would highly recommend this book to Lauren Kate fans or for people looking for a new great Young Adult read. * a copy was provided by publisher for review*
