If you are looking to find a book on world health studies or a better understanding of human health based on proper diet, this book is not it. From start to finish the author hammers home his personal beliefs of a plant based diet being the only way to live and that anything that comes from an animal is bad, period. The author supports his theory with gross assumptions based on studies of lab rats given gross dosages of proteins that could not even be compared to human levels, then closes every part with animal diet bad, plant base good. As far as coverage on the actual "China Study" the author barely scrapes the surface of the study and workings of it, you could simply find more on the web than what is listed in the book. He would have been better off giving the book a vegan sort of title rather than attempting to glorify the book with such a false title. But then his sales would have likely reflected the propaganda based literature found throughout this book. Save your money for a better book than wasting it like I did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT AND DESPERATELY NEEDED This book is for those left brainers who need well documented information before making a dramatic shift in their dietary habits. I have never read such a comprehensive and entertaining book that provides our world with a true solution instead of flakey and fairy ideas that sound great but are not possible to apply. Dr. Campbell is a well renowned scientist and has hit the nail on the head with this book. I've been relatively healthy my whole life, but it was not until I came across this work that I became passionate about nutrition without being paranoid. This book won't try to "sell" you a diet pill, potion or a magical herb. It will give you simple tested principles that if applied on a broad scale have the potential to raise the level of health of our desperately ill society. If you currently suffer from health problems, or even if you think you are healthy, you can still optimize your health with this information. I only have two critiques: 1. Due to the heavy research oriented nature of the topic and Dr. Campbell's life, the book can come across as quite "sciencey" to a lot of people that I have recommended it to you. That's not a bad thing, it just means that the average person who doesn't have some sort of nutrition or research knowledge may find it hard to get through in some parts. Just SKIP the heavy parts, and use the conclusions they come to :) 2.Again, because of the excellent documentation in the book...it can be quite long. Overall, it's a great book for any good library to have if you are at all interested in the link between Optimal health and Diet. Enjoy the read and thanks for reading my review. CB

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The China Study, my perspective The China Study confirms that the massive amounts of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes, we face, along with other diseases of affluence , are largely the result of poor food choices and eating habits. Prominant vegetarians will sometimes cite near vear-vegetarians as validation for the superiority of a pure vegetarian diet. The Tarahumara, clearly among the fittest people on the planet, would have little use for many of the modern medical interventions that have become our overburdened and ailing health care system's bread and butter . But while these indigenous people of north central Mexico do eat a whole foods, predominately plant-based diet, they also eat some fish, and at times, even lean red meat. ( At least I assume that if you chase a deer for days, on foot, until the deer drops from exhaustion, that you not only give new meaning to the term sporting chance , but also end up eating lean meat. ) They are not vegetarian, but they are very close, and, so it seems, are many Chinese. Still, at the end of the day , in this culture, and these times, it probably doesn't make a lot of sense to eat any higher on the food chain, than you absolutely have to. And if you don't trust these guys ( Ornish, Robbins, & Campbell ), who do you trust? The soy bashers? I don't think so. They are either so over the top in their critique of soy foods, or just plain wrong (ie. see soy consumption in Okinawa The Okinawa Program , pg. 71 ), that along with their unsupported, and truly bizarre views on saturated animal fat and cholesterol, they reflect or portray an industry-driven agenda. The inside jacket of The China Study states, By any measure, America's health is failing. We spend far more, per capita, on health care than any other society in the world, and yet two-thirds of Americans are overweight, and more than 15 million Americans have diabetes. It goes on from there, but I doubt many North Americans would dispute, that collectively, our health is failing. The latter chapters of this book go a long way in explaining why that is. Who's been disseminating the nutrition information that shape government food guidelines. And why combating disease with superior nutrition, has been met with so much resistance. While I haven't been convinced that everyone will thrive on a pure vegetarian diet, I am convinced that virtually everyone will thrive on a near-vegetarian diet. Obviously, the less meat you eat, the more room you leave, for more nutrient dense foods. I'm sure many vegetarians feel better about taking the cows milk, rather than taking the cow's life. This book may cause them to do some soul searching. If The China Study inspires you to adopt, or experiment with a whole foods, vegetarian, or near-vegetarian diet, I would recommend reading Joel Fuhrman's Eat To Live , to gain, among other things, an appreciation for nutrient dense foods.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a vegetarian delight! this book proves over 35 exhaustive years of study, that the ancients who practised and advocated vegetarianism were right all along, and our perverse nutritional habits and conglomerates are doing people as a whole major damage to their bodies. killing and eating animals essentially kills you.

About the Author

For more than 40 years, T. Colin Campbell, PhD, has been at the forefront of nutrition research. His legacy, the China Study, is the most comprehensive study of health and nutrition ever conducted. Dr. Campbell is the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University. He has received more than 70 grant years of peer-reviewed research funding and authored more than 300 research papers. The China Study was the culmination of a 20-year partnership of Cornell University, Oxford University and the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine.

A 1999 graduate of Cornell University and recipient of a medical degree in 2010, Thomas M. Campbell II, MD, is a writer, actor and five-time marathon runner.
