HarperCollins Publishers Ltd | October 20, 2014 | Hardcover

The Crazy Game is rated 4 out of 5 by 1.

In the spirit ofThe GameandThe Blind Side, a raw, raucous and unvarnished look at life between the posts.

No job in the world of sports is as intimidating, exhilarating and as stress-ridden as that of a hockey goaltender. Standing in the crease facing one-hundred-mile-an-hour slapshots, the entire game riding on your glove hand, standing on your head when necessary-all job requirements for those wanting to be the best goalies in the world. Now imagine doing that job while suffering high anxiety, depression and obsessive compulsive disorder, and having your career nearly literally cut short by a skate across your neck.
The Crazy Gametakes you deep into the troubled mind of Clint Malarchuk, the former NHL goaltender for the Quebec Nordiques, Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres. Even as a boy, Malarchuk faced such deep anxiety that he missed school and acted out at school and with his friends. His OCD changed the way he trained, and he was almost always the last player off the ice. When his throat was slashed during a collision in the crease, Malarchuk nearly died on the ice. Forever changed, he struggled deeply with depression and a dependence on alcohol, which nearly cost him his life and left a bullet in his head.

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enlighting view on mental health and alcohol abuse. I enjoyed this book on the way it illustrated professional hockey, especially in the N.H.L. ranks. I also enjoyed the true to the fact in which Clint Malarchuk described in great detail his utmost feelings toward his role as a professional athlete The explanation of his inner "demons", he was experiencing with his mental health issues. I too, could identify his obsession with alcohol, as I am also a recovering alcoholic. I enjoyed this book, from the first page, right to the end, I could not put it down. I think every kid in Canada that played minor hockey, had a dream of reaching it to the pro level. Clint described that and was fortunate to achieve his dream. I personally feel that the number one key to his book, is the warning and dangers of what alcohol can do to anyone, not just professional athletes. I enjoyed this writing immensely! .
