Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Marilyn is done with her husband, Jim, treating her so poorly that she gets the courage to leave. Jim is shocked to find her gone and has no clue why she has left. This is a journey how important marriage is and that it takes work to have it work. I really enjoyed this book. Walsh and Smalley make a fantastic pair. This book also seemed very realistic which when dealing with a topic of marriage is a nice thing. Which makes it easy to love and hate the characters at different times. Will be waiting for the next in the series to come out. Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Fantastic Read! What a fantastic read! Walsh and Smalley make a great team and give their readers a realistic snapshot of a struggling marriage and the fallout that ensues. There's depth and insight and some really funny moments -- at least they were to me. Poor clueless Jim, not quite sure why Marilyn has left him . Only a man could get away with portraying some of those scenes. A female author would have been accused of stereo-typing. The authors did a great job of converting me into a Jim fan. I didn't think it would be possible at the beginning of the book but Jim's conversion into a gentler, softer more spiritual self makes for a moving read. Even as Marilyn stays prickly and defensive almost to the very end. The couples dynamics is dead-on. This could easily be used in a couples therapy course. The Dance is fiction though, and it makes a rewarding and thought-provoking read. Memorable characters, a tight plot and dashes of humour to break up the angst all contribute to a wonderfully satisfying read. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hard Work Pays Off Story Description: Revell Publishing|April 1, 2013|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-8007-2148-0 Love’s recovery starts with a single step… After 27 years of marriage, Marilyn Anderson is tired of playing the role of perfect wife. Her husband, Jim, is a successful businessman who gives her everything she needs – a beautiful home in an upscale neighborhood, the financial freedom to be a stay-at-home Mom, an enviable collection of stuff. Everything, that is, except what really matters: love. After years of trying to connect with Jim, Marilyn has had enough. She longs to experience some measure of happiness before she’s too old to enjoy it. Needing some time to herself to sort things out, Marilyn leaves to start a new job and take dancing lessons – something she has wanted to do for as long as she can remember. Shocked to find his wife gone, Jim Anderson must sort through the past to save his marriage. With a little help from an unexpected ally, he begins a campaign to win Marilyn back. What he doesn’t anticipate is how his actions will affect everyone around him – starting with himself. My Review: Marilyn Anderson and her husband, Jim are happily married on the surface. However, Marilyn is truly unhappy and has reached the end of her rope. She ends up leaving the marriage and moves out when her attempts at talking with him fall on deaf ears. Jim is shocked into disbelief that Marilyn has actually gone and wants her back immediately. What Jim fails to realize is that his anger and lack of communication skills are what has driven, Marilyn away. After he speaks with a woman who knows Marilyn through a dance studio, he begins to understand and comprehend that he needs to control his anger and take a serious look at why the marriage has failed. This was a beautiful story that shows how much both partners in this relationship change with some hard work and it was neat to watch them both grow and change. But it was frustrating and aggravating waiting for Jim to change. He is one of those people who needs a pile of bricks to fall on his head before he really ‘gets it.’ Overall, The Dance, was an excellent novel and one that I would recommend. Rated 5 out of 5 by from By jove I think they've done it! Authors always take a risk in writing a book that is not only fiction, but seeks to convey a strong message as well, but in the case of "The Dance" the authors have wonderfully accomplished their mission! The story flows very well, and I was immediately drawn into the lives of Marilyn and Jim, the struggles in their marriage, and their path towards healing. The characters are created with a complex realness, definitely imperfect, yet completely likeable. I enjoyed looking through the different character's eyes as the story unfolded, and found the drama to be top-notch. There were several moments where I battled tears, and I especially loved the interactions Jim has with his children. What can I say? I'm a sucker for scenes between fathers and their children, and there are some powerful ones in this book indeed. Although elements of the book are definitely seeking to convey a message and so could become preachy, such as where Jim is working through the ways he has failed in his marriage, it is done in a very natural and realistic way, and one that continually held my interest. As a result, not only will this book entertain readers of both genders, but they will be taught powerful truths and challenged to have a better marriage at the same time. This may be just the book you have been looking for to someone who may not ever pick-up a non-fiction book, but learns well through the power of story. I highly recommend this excellent book, and award it 5 out of 5 stars. Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc.
