The Diet Fix: Why Diets Fail And How To Make Yours Work is rated 5 out of 5 by 1.
Despite the success stories publicized by Atkins, South Beach, Weight Watchers, and others, 90% of all diets end in failure.  How can fix the way we lose weight so that we make results last?

Weight loss expert Dr. Yoni Freedhoff has uncovered the flawed thinking that sabotages even the most earnest weight loss efforts. The majority of dieting or weight loss programs call for regular sacrifice: Give up an entire food group; fight hunger day and night; undertake exhausting and grueling exercise regiments. These approaches are unrealistic, unhealthy, and make it nearly impossible to maintain results.

Now, at last, there is hope. In The Diet Fix, Dr. Freedhoff offers a tested program for breaking down the negative thought patterns that prevent people from losing weight and keeping it off.  Through the course of years of research and patient treatment, he has developed a 10-Day Reset that supports losing weight while maintaining a healthy, enjoyable lifestyle. This reset is designed to eliminate the habits that so often lead to weight gain: use it to shut down cravings, prevent indulgences from turning into binges, and break up with the scale once and for all. The 10-Day Reset can make any diet more effective, whether it’s low-carb, low-fat, meal replacement, calorie tracking, or anything in between.

Whether used on its own or in conjunction with any other diet, Dr. Freedhoff’s program shows how to replace this toxic dieting mindset with positive beliefs and behaviors. It is time to break the cycle of traumatic dieting. With The Diet Fix, Dr. Freedhoff offers a groundbreaking, useable guide to begin living happily while losing permanently.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Realistic approach for real people I've been following the author's Weighty Matters blog  for a while now and he seemed sensible. I hoped that the book would not disappoint and it absolutely didn't! This is not your standard diet book. You know the one-exclude some food group, the weight falls off, it'a a miracle! I've gone through quite a number of them and the miracle was always short lived. I've yo-yoed up and down for the last 20 years and have an extensive wardrobe of different sized clothes to prove it. For the first time in a long time, I actually have some hope of making lasting changes. There are 3 main sections: The Reveal, The 10 Day Reset and The Recovery. The book starts out by describing diets gone wrong and introduces Post-Traumatic Dieting Disorder. I recognised myself in many of the descriptions. Too many! I'm pretty sure I'm a classic case of PTDD. Luckily, there is hope for me. It leads into a 10 day/10 step programme to fix the damage and start losing sensibly. It's all wonderfully doable and makes sense. Pitfalls are covered and there's also a great recipe section at the back. Even I could manage them! The final section teaches you how to keep these behaviours going for life. It's wonderfully down to earth and doable. There are no false promises, no starvation, no special foods. It's based on scientific evidence, a wealth of experience and real life. I have recommended this book to everybody-particularly all my friends who have had similar experiences with losing and regaining or just struggling in general. Some didn't like that it recommends not getting too hungry and remembering to track your food and being aware of calories...but I think that's a good balance of not getting obsessive but still dropping the pounds. If I had to pick one word to describe the tone of the book it would be "kind". No matter how many times you've tried and failed, there's hope for you. You're not alone and you're not a failure. I could feel myself relaxing and exhaling as I read. With this approach, I'm confident you (and I) can actually succeed. For life!

Read from the Book

A (Very) Brief History of Dieting Diets are anything but new. The first popular diet was a lowcarb diet written by a British coffin maker in 1863. His name was William Banting, and the diet he championed and detailed in his Letter on Corpulence, Addressed to the Public was of the lowcarb variety with an emphasis on eating meat, greens, and fruit while avoiding sugar, starches, dairy, and beer. His book was so incredibly popular that at the time, the word banting was used in conversation in place of dieting. Believe it or not, the book is still in print and you can even buy it in Kindle format. But it’s been over the past 50 or so years, not coincidentally the time period in which obesity rates have nearly quadrupled, that the number of diets has grown by multiple orders of magnitude. At the time I’m writing this paragraph, over on Amazon there are over 37,000 books in their “diets and weight loss” racks. Their strategies may all vary wildly, but ultimately we can subdivide all diet books and programs into seven broad categories: 1. Good/bad diets: These are among the simplest to follow. They have very clear rules that either cut out entire categories of foods or provide very specific meal plans. People on these types of diets are told that they don’t need to track intake in terms of calories; instead they’re told to avoid virtually an entire food group and they’ll do fine. The most obvious examples of these are the ultralow&

Editorial Reviews

“This 10-day reset plan is designed to work with any diet plan to make it more effective. While debunking a lot of weight loss myths, it also provides sound advice for those personalizing their own lifestyle plan.” -- Today show "[Yoni Freedhoff] has invented an un-diet...a set of simple food and excericse guidelines that can help you safely lose a pound a week and keep it off--summer fun included." -- Glamour magazine "if any diet book “works,” it’s going to be this one." -- Scientific American "As should be obvious to anyone who''s been paying attention, these and many other approaches to weight-loss can work. The real challenge is keeping weight off, and Freedhoff''s advice focuses on how to win that battle by formulating a plan you can happily live with for the rest of your life, not just for a few weeks or months." -- Runner''s World Praise for The Diet Fix " The Diet Fix delivers.  This is a wonderful approach to tackling the Diet Demons.  It allows people to keep what they like most about food -- the taste and indulgences -- and to get rid of what they don''t like about food -- overeating and guilt.  It''s about balance.  Regaining balance in our diet as well as in our lives." -- Brian Wansink (Ph.D.), Author of Mindless Eating and Slim by Design "Here finally is a book capturing the nuts and bolts of the dieting culture that has gripped North America.  With Dr. Freedhoff''s presentation of fact supported by years
