Little, Brown And Company | November 28, 2011 | Hardcover

The Drop is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 5.
Harry Bosch has been given three years before he must retire from the LAPD, and he wants cases more fiercely than ever. In one morning, he gets two.

DNA from a 1989 rape and murder matches a 29-year-old convicted rapist. Was he an eight-year-old killer or has something gone terribly wrong in the new Regional Crime Lab? The latter possibility could compromise all of the lab''s DNA cases currently in court.

Then Bosch and his partner are called to a death scene fraught with internal politics. Councilman Irvin Irving''s son jumped or was pushed from a window at the Chateau Marmont. Irving, Bosch''s longtime nemesis, has demanded that Harry handle the investigation.

Relentlessly pursuing both cases, Bosch makes two chilling discoveries: a killer operating unknown in the city for as many as three decades, and a political conspiracy that goes back into the dark history of the police department.

Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I liked it. 3.5 stars Detective Harry Bosch comes across two cases in one day. One, a cold case, where a DNA sample of blood on the victim traces to someone who would fit the profile exactly... except that he was just a boy when it happened. The other, a suicide – or is it a homicide? – of a local politician's son. This was the first book in this series that I've read and I liked it. Maybe not enough to start at the beginning and read more of the series, but I won't rule that out completely. I was happy that I was able to follow without having read the earlier books, though. I did find the cold case much more interesting than the suicide/homicide. I also really enjoyed the personal side of Bosch, especially his relationship with his daughter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Another Classic Michael Connelly is a household name and his books are well reviewed everywhere so I'm not going to pretend that my thoughts are going to make much of a difference. Connelly is actually on my must-read-in-order list but sometimes I'm loaned a book and feel that I should read and return it in a timely manner, plus his novels are so well written that a person can jump in at any point and not feel left out. I've dabbled in Connelly's work and I've never been disappointed. His plots are tight, his narrative is quick and his characters leap off the page fully formed. Sometimes I like to cast the movie version of the books in my head; I still don't know who should be cast has Harry Bosch. The Drop was another good read, in it Bosch solves two cases both of which have nice surprise twists. Connelly is also good at giving his fans little treats along the way; I really liked his tip of the hat to Castle. Connelly has appeared two or three times, as himself, on the show so it was fun to get a reference in the book. It was a very enjoyable book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Harry Bosch returns in Michael Connelly's latest book - The Drop. Harry has three years left until mandatory retirement kicks in. He's working in the cold case squad now. When he and his partner Chu get a DNA hit from a twenty year old sample, they think a mistake has been made. The perp is in the system, but he would have been eight years old at the time. But just as they start investigating further, they are told to drop everything to investigate the death of a prominent city counciller's son. The summons comes from the top - Harry calls it 'high jingo' - there are political factions at war and work here. But of course, Harry works both cases. Although I've read everything Connelly has written, this is the first of his books that I've listened to. Len Cariou was the reader. At first I found his slightly sibilant esses annoying, but as I got further into the story, I didn't hear them. His voice is rough and gravelly and immediately brought to mind the mental image I have of Harry. He also handled the other roles well, providing a different voice for each character. The Drop had two great cases as the primary story lines. But it also has secondary plot lines involving Harry's personal life, notably with his daughter Maddie. I am enjoying Harry as a dad. Really, I can't say much more than The Drop is classic Connelly - an excellent read with a character I am quite partial to. And Connelly has left it open for another book with Bosch.
