Julie Barenson''s young husband left her two unexpected gifts before he died-a Great Dane puppy named Singer and the promise that he would always be watching over her. Now, four years have passed. Still living in the small town of Swansboro, North Carolina, twenty-nine-year-old Julie is emotionally ready to make a commitment to someone again. But who? Should it be Richard Franklin, the handsome, sophisticated engineer who treats her like a queen? Or Mike Harris, the down-to-earth nice guy who was her husband''s best friend? Choosing one of them should bring her more happiness than she''s had in years. Instead, Julie is soon fighting for her life in a nightmare spawned by a chilling deception and jealousy so poisonous that it has become a murderous desire...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Love This Book Another awesome book!!
Date published: 2014-11-19
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great story A true romantic!
Date published: 2014-03-24
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Unsure. I love Nicholas Sparks as much as the next girl, and this book delivered everything a Sparks fan would want: love and tragedy. But it also brought something a little different than most Sparks books: suspense. I enjoyed having the suspense aspect in the book, it followed a different pace but unlike all of his other books, I had a hard time getting through this one. It was a little slow moving, and while I cried at the end of the book (let's be honest, it IS Nicholas Sparks, it's bound to happen) I just didn't feel as invested in the characters as I would have liked to have been.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Predictable Like other reviewers, I cried at the beginning and end of this book. The middle, however, was rather predictable and thus not all that gripping. This book was ok, I read it quickly, and with some interest, but it isn't something I would highly recommend. Singer was my favourite character - lol.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heart Racing I teared at the beginning and at the end. During the middle of the book it was all heart racing emotions. I really enjoyed how this book was based on love developed by best friends and a thrilling love by psychological obsession.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from His first thriller I love love love his books, and this was no different. The idea of a suspense novel was a perfect twist to his romance novels. Warning animal lovers, you will need a box of Kleenex and a serious detachment from this book. It's passionate, suspenseful and loving. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat, one of those "I feel like i'm watching TV it flows so well" books.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good This was my first Nicholas Sparks book and I liked it. I got very caught up in the plot. I wanted to know what would happen and I couldn't put this book down until the end. I fell in love with Singer the Great Dane. I will most certainly try other Nicholas Sparks books.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing This book was great from the start to the finish. I felt like I was in the book with them by the end of the novel. Standing O to Sparks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible! This book was very intense. I could barely peel my eyes away from it. The suspense was almost unbearable, I kept fighting back the urge to flip to the back of the book and finally find out what was going to happen. The book had me in tears from the very first page, and it left me sobbing by the last page. I wasn't sure what to think when i saw that Nicholas Sparks had come out with a Thriller. I was a little skeptical at first, but boy, was i proven wrong. This book was amazing, and it definitely made it on my favourites list! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, Especially Dog lovers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning! When i first heard that Nicholas Sparks wrote a thriller i wasn't sure what to think. i didn't know if Sparks' could pull it off, however The Guardian is my all time favorite book. As a dog lover, this book really hit home and even though it was a thriller it also had a beautiful romance that Nicholas Sparks is famous for. I've been recommending this to all my family and friends. i would recommend this book to anybody who is into romance novels and/or is a dog lover. Be sure to keep the tissues ready, i needed them by the prologue

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Surprisingly awesome I was a little skeptical when I read the back and realized Nicholas Sparks had written a thriller, which isn't usually his type of book, but it was really good. It had sweet touching moments, and suspenseful moments. I really liked it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of his best! When I read this book I was hooked from the beginning. It's so different from all his other books which make it that much better! Definatly a tear jerker. I couldn't control my tears near the end! lol. VERY good book over all!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best book. This has been the best book by far that I have ever read. It gave me chills at times. So suspensful, shocking end.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cross-Over Sparks proves he can write thrillers as easily as he writes love stories. This combination love story/thriller about a stalker is well done. You get an inside look into the mind of the stalker, although your intuition sends up red flags long before you can read his thoughts. The love story that develops between Julie and Mike shows the emotional struggles involved in moving a relationship from a solid friendship to something more serious, especially when he had been her late husband's best friend. Again, likeable main characters, witty dialogue, and plenty of action. A twisted psychopath who at first seems too good to be true, and a family pet who has great intuition, as well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great summer read. While somewhat predictable I enjoyed this story. It was a nice end of summer read and will probably be a book that I won't quickly forget.

Nichloas Sparks is truly an amazing writer, i could not put this book down. And I will admit that the ending made me shed a tear...for those who have read it you will know what I'm talking about.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Soooo Good I love Nicholas Sparks as an author, so I was thrilled when this book came out. The thing that caught my attention and kept my interrest at first was Singer, the Great Dane (my fav. dog), but in no time the Great Dane wasn't the only thing that kept me interrested, the story was excellent, it was full of suspence and intencity... A word for the wise though, don't read the last few pages first, it totally ruins it!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best book by Sparks! This is my absolute fav book by Nicholas Sparks because it's so heartfelt and I couldn't put it down. Because of this story in particular, I too want a dog like Singer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very powerful & moving IT makes you bawl right from the first chapter and you pretty much don't stop until the end. A must read for anyone who has a pet that is as close as any member of your family.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from it's boring I was expecting something different. I don't know what the author thought when he was writing this book, it's like a book for contryside people, so many pages and no exciting events, just the same boring things happening all time(Julie goes to work, Julie has a dinner, Julie goes to bed, ...) . I was expecting more. I'm desapointed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Heart-throbbing Very well written book. Full of suspense and heart-stopping situations. We begin to feel fearful, alongside July and Mike. Extremely captivating, but I think what we normally expect out of Nicholas Sparks book is only one word, love, and it seems to be lacking a bit of the emotions that are suppose to be arised when the audience reads the parts that are suppose to be the most sensational. But the ending does make up for the unexciting parts in the story that seems to drag on... Not the best book that I've read, but all the same, VERY good book!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Patronizing As this book was on Chapters 'bestseller' list, and had good reviews, I bought it., but have been so disappointed by the read. I found it extremely patronizing, stating the obvious and in so much detail, almost making me feel i was reading a children's storybook. I felt i as watching a low budget romance film and the only relief i have found is that I am glad i didn't rush off to watch 'The Notebook' or 'Message in a Bottle'.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nick Sparks does it again! I have read all of nicholas sparks' novels and none have made me cry quite like this one did. This book is a must read for any loving pet owner. This book is a combonation of laughs and tears with a hint of mystery. You won't be able to put it down.
Date published: 2005-01-04
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made Me Cry... I spent a couple of late nights awake with this book. It was so good. I needed to see what happened. There were many times where I was laughing, only to end up crying shortly there after. This was the 2nd novel by Sparks that I have read...but it won't be the last!
Date published: 2004-07-18
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Do yourself a favour - READ THIS BOOK! Having just read the Notebook, I was eager to read something else by Sparks to confirm the suspicion that I had just found my new favourite writer....and if the Guardian is any indication of his other novels, I have succeeded! I was expecting a cheesy romance, but it was the furthest thing from cheesy. It broke my heart, made me laugh, had me on the edge of my seat, and then put my heart back together again. With truly remarkable characters, Sparks has crafted a modern love story full of intrigue and mystery, where the fine line between friends and lovers is put to the test, resulting in the kind of ending that will make even the most cynical person believe...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extraordinary!!! I have never read a book that has captivated me from beginning to end before, until now. This book had everything you could want. Suspense, love, drama, comedy, it didn't matter, it had it all. Nicholas Sparks did an amazing job, and I absolutely love this book. It will forever be my all time favorite. It's definitely a must read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Amazing I have read all of Sparks novels. This the absolute best! Words cannot describe how excellent this book truly is. There is suspense romance everything you want from a good story. The way Mr. Sparks writes really makes you feel the characters and his writing makes you feel the story!
Date published: 2004-05-03
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best Yet! I have read all but two of Nicholas Sparks books and I have to say that each time he writes a book his stories become more addictive and realistic. The is my favorite so far, and in my opinion his best book ever. Nicholas keeps you in suspense until the very end, and even then he keeps you thinking about what happened to the characters later in their life. To me Julie and Mike are his most life-like characters yet, you can really relate to them and their feelings. A MUST READ!
