Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Compelling Military and Political Thriller Tom Clancy's first effort was a very strong one. He places the readers right into a scenario during the Cold War when a renegade Soviet submarine captain, Marko Ramius, commandeers a nuclear sub and heads for the American coast. All the while, the reader is thrust back and forth between various American and Soviet points of view, all of whom have no idea what Ramius is attempting to do! Is he about to start a nuclear holocaust or defect? This dilemma fuels the drama of the story and leads to a highly dramatic climax. One note of caution: Clancy is very technical with regards to military matters such as hardware, rank and terminology, and can very verbose in his descriptions. It will take a bit of willpower to digest it all, but it is worth it. Still, there are other positives, such as his ability to write convincing dialogue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great I am not a fan of reading and this book drag me right into itself. I first saw the movie and after which I found the book and decided to pick it up. Clancy's way of describing the scene and the actions of each makes you feel like you are right in the action with them. He knows what is going on in the military and because he does it makes this book the best read ever

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hunt for Red October The Hunt for Red October is without a doubt, the best submarine story since Run Silent, Run Deep. Reading this book will hook on Clancy forever!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A very good book I thought this was a very good book, eventhough military novels are not usually my type of fiction. Although the book lags occasionally in the middle, this book is virtually flawless. The basic plot is as follows: one of the best Soviet sub captains takes command of a brand new 'boomer' (missile sub), then suddenly disappears with it. This sets off a race between the U.S.A. & the U.S.S.R. to find it. If you like books that feature the military, action or suspense, you should buy this book instead of wasting your time reading this. P.S.: Buy the hardcover edition, because you will want to read it again and again (I myself have read it twice since I bought it six months ago), and paperbacks cannot take very much wear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Red October One of Clancy's best novels. The Hunt For Red October is a novel that is a must read. His story of the russian submarine captain marko ramius and the russians that want the red october destroyed rather than have another country get it. This ranks up with Patriot Games and Rainbow Six.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hunt For Red October “Somewhere under the Atlantic, a Soviet sub commander has just made a fateful decision. The Red October is heading west. The Americans want her. The Russians want her back. And the most incredible chase in history is on…” Captain Marko Ramius has been chosen to command the Red October. The Red October has a new propulsion system (the caterpillar drive), which is almost virtually silent. It can’t be detected by sonar. Just before Ramius set sail from Murmansk, he sent a letter to the chief political officer of the Soviet Navy. In this letter it stated his plans, he was going to defect to the United States. CIA-analyst Jack Ryan believes that Ramius is going to defect to the US, but the Pentagon thinks Ryan is wrong, and they believe the Soviets, who told them that Ramius is a “mad man” and will launch nuclear weapons at the US. This begins the chase for the Red October. This book by Tom Clancy was very good. Suspense was portrayed very well throughout the story. The book always kept me guessing at what was going to happen next.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic This book is the greatest book I've ever read. It keeps going and never slows down. The movie does not do it justice. It is a must read for anyone who liked the movie because it is way better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Best Of The Best The extreme thriller of Tom Clancy's "The Hunt For Red October" is beyond descriptions! The thriller is a guided tour of a missing nuclear sub, running toward the democracy of the United States of America. The best thriller of Tom Clancy is a dramatic story that is a MUST READ!!!!!!

About the Author

Thirty years ago Tom Clancy was a Maryland insurance broker with a passion for naval history. Years before, he had been an English major at Baltimore’s Loyola College and had always dreamed of writing a novel. His first effort, The Hunt for Red October—the first of the phenomenally successful Jack Ryan novels—sold briskly as a result of rave reviews, then catapulted onto the New York Times bestseller list after President Reagan pronounced it “the perfect yarn.” From that day forward, Clancy established himself as an undisputed master at blending exceptional realism and authenticity, intricate plotting, and razor-sharp suspense. He passed away in October 2013.
