From the Jacket

A treasure worth killing for, Dashiell Hammett's coolly glittering gem of detective fiction, first published in 1930, is a novel that has haunted three generations of readers.

About the Author

Dashiell Samuel Hammett was born in St. Mary's County, Maryland. He grew up in Philadelphia and Baltimore, left school at the age of fourteen, and held several kinds of jobs thereafter-messenger boy, newsboy, clerk, operator, and stevedore, finally becoming an operative for Pinkerton's Detective Agency. After World War I, he returned to work as a detective and soon turned to writing. He published The Maltese Falcon in 1930. His other literary successes include The Thin Man (1932), Red Harvest (1929), The Dain Curse (1929), and The Glass Key (1931).
