The Nasty Bits: Collected Varietal Cuts, Usable Trim, Scraps, and Bones

by Anthony Bourdain

Bloomsbury USA | April 15, 2007 | Trade Paperback

The Nasty Bits: Collected Varietal Cuts, Usable Trim, Scraps, and Bones is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 5.
Risk-taker, omnivore and well-seasoned raconteur, Anthony Bourdain has acquired quite the dossier of candid, outrageous stories. Whether scrounging for eel in Hanoi, singing the praises of a well-served slab of foie gras or bemoaning the lack of showmanship exhibited by modern thugs, Bourdain’s opinions are as strong as his language and his stiletto wit never misses the mark. The Nasty Bits brings together the best of his previously uncollected nonfiction and new, never-before-published material. Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Nasty, The Tasty and Good Anthony Bourdain's insights into the culinary underworld along with his insatiable appetite for exotic foods and tastes makes this an enjoyable read. Could Hollywood make a bio-pic of Anthony Bourdain - what a life! He recounts his zeitgeist in the splattered chapters of his sordid drugged-hazed early life and his iron-stomach penchant for weird foods that most of us couldn't fathom. Cool book from a cool cook and scribe!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from iTS GOOD BUT.... ...YOU MAY HAVE READ IT ALREADY. NASTY BITS IS A COLECTION OF ARTICLES FROM MAGAZINES AND INTERVIEWS ANTHONY HAS ALREADY DONE ELSEWHERE. ALTHOUGH IT DOES HAVE ITS UPS AND DOWNS AND NOT SO INTERESTING BITS OVERALL IT PUTS A SMILE ON THIS COOKS FACE.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Bathroom Read Anthony Bourdain's The Nasty Bits is somewhat along the lines of Chicken Soup For The Soul kitchen edition. It is a compilation of stories and insight into the mind and world of a world class chef. Unfortunately if you are looking for a follow up to Kitchen Confidential you will be sorely disappointed. The book doesn't seem to have a real flow to it so reading more than a couple of pages at a time is tedious. With that said there are enough interesting stories that would make this a great bathroom read. If this book was an item on a menu it would definately be an appetizer. So enjoy this before tackling your main course.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from pulls no punches... As a diehard Bourdain fan, a book of previously published material likely meant - or so I thought - very few surprises. While I had come across several of the articles contained in this collection in Gourmet and other publications, it was a pleasure to read them again, and, surprisingly, to discover pieces that I had not seen, despite my obsessive compulsive google habit. The best part - little snippets at the end where the author explains and even critiques his own work, giving some background and context to the articles. At turns hilarious, rousing, and sometimes (believe it or not) even poignant - Nasty Bits is definitely worth adding to the collection.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Exactly what the title says I really enjoyed this collection of stories. There really is a little bit of everything, presented in a bare bones kind of way. I love reading about exotic places and someone else eating weird things in exotic places. Almost all the of the stories were reprints from magazines or periodicals, so if you read everything Mr. Bourdain writes then none of this stuff will be new to you. Although I understand why Mr. Bourdain wrote some footnotes for each story, it seems like he is contradicting himself in some of the footnotes.
