A breakthrough approach for a good night''s sleep--with no tears

Based on her research, Pantley''s guide provides you with effective strategies to overcoming naptime and nighttime problems. The No-Cry Sleep Solution offers clearly explained, step-by-step ideas that steer your little ones toward a good night''s sleep--all with no crying.

  • Determine--and work with--baby''s biological sleep rhythms
  • Create a customized, step-by-step plan to get baby to sleep through the night

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get this book!! You need this book! As a first time mom, I read alot of books, probably too many. I should have just read this one. Pantley's "the no-cry sleep solution" is fantastic. It is written as a parent to parent conversation, gentle, and without judgment. Regardless of your parenting style, you will find this book helpful. It is written in a logical step-by-step approach, and is very upfront that this is a process and it will take time, but the end result is a transition that is gentle and loving - for everyone. It is well organized and clearly flags tips and tricks and who they might best suit (everyone, breastfeeders, bottle feeders, co-sleepers, etc.). The sleep diary log sheets are very easy to use or modify. In a time where I have lacked confidence and have felt judged by the decisions I have made, this book was a welcome addition to our household. It sits by the couch and the pages are ear marked. Many of them. Get the book.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth It I admit that when I bought this book I was secretly hoping that it would be my magical solution to get my 6 month old baby sleeping through the night. Although it wasn't exactly that, I'm still very glad I bought it. Here's why: 1. This book reminded me that at the age of 6 months, it's normal for my baby NOT to sleep through the night. I had to reassess my situation and decide if I was being unrealistice. I also learned that there are other babies who are waking up WAY more often each night than my baby and that I should actually be greatful for that. 2. This book reaffirmed my belief in Attachment Parenting and reminded me why I chose this style of parenting. 3. Although some of the techniques in the book aren't new ones, it was nice to know that they were recommended by a reliable source (the author, Elizabeth Pantley). Plus there were some new techniques I wasn't aware of. So true, this wasn't my magical solution, but it did give me more knowledge and the confidence I needed to improve my baby (and my family's) sleep. I have implemented some of the suggested techniques and I'm happy to say that we are all sleeping better (but there are still nights where the baby wakes up.... because that's normal!!!)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Should be called Best Sleep Solution When my son was 3 my sister gave me this book. It was too late for him but perfect for our second baby. I read this before she was born and used the solutions with her only days old. By a few weeks she was sleeping 6 hours and by 8 weeks she was sleeping 8-10 hours. Thank you Elizabeth!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Read this early on I noticed the No-cry sleep solution on my bedside table yesterday and realized I haven’t consulted it in a long time, which, I’m sure you will agree, is an excellent state of affairs. I had little-to-no sleep issues with our newborn, and this is due at least in part to the fact that I read this book, following a friend's suggestion, very early on (during the first 2 months of her life as I breastfed her non-stop), before any sleep “problems” ever arised. I remember marvelling at all the details in the book and felt sorry for all the mothers who needed all that advice. I have since picked it up again as we went through a small series of night-snacking. The book reminded me of little things I had forgotten and we are off on another 12-hour-nights run for a long time. Now that I look back, I realize that I was able to prevent many interrupted nights without much thought thanks simply to the knowledge acquired from reading all that experience-based advice and the words of other mothers quoted in the book. It was as if I had dozens of sisters, aunts and mothers shouldering me and teaching me what to expect as a new mother, and who can argue with the power of that!? The three most important concepts in the whole book for me were the “vow” to fill baby’s tummy before sleep, the routine before sleep, and confirming what my insctincts were already dictating: that when baby is crying, you go to her because her needs, whatever they may be, are necessarily legitimate. My next read: The no-cry discipline solution. Can't wait to prevent more issues by being educated and supported by this wonderful author!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must have for Sleep deprived Parents I cannot say enough great things about this book. I stumbled upon it at the bookstore a few weeks back. I was looking for anything to help me get out of the fog I was walking around in from lack of sleep. I have a 10 month old daughter who is "determined, stubborn, and strong willed". This is a quote from her pediatrician. We got to the point where she would wake up 8 to 10 times a night wanting to nurse and if she didn't she would SCREAM. I mean really scream!!!! She hated her crib and would get so upset that she would start hyperventilating. The cover with the lovely sleeping baby pulled me in and by the first paragraph I was enthralled. What made me like this book so much was the easy, gentle, open suggestions for each UNIQUE family. We were seriously sleep deprived and I was crying at the drop of a hat. Pantley's book gave me suggestions for EVERY situation. She covered the breastfeeder, the bottle feeder, co-sleeping, crib sleeping etc. At first my husband rolled his eyes at me because he said NOTHING would work..she was just stubborn. He is now Pantley's second biggest fan! (behind me of course). I am so delighted and amazed to say that our little girl is now sleeping through the night most nights. We made a plan, STUCK TO IT, and by the 3rd night she only woken up twice, AND she put herself back to sleep once!!! I can honestly tell you that the thought and love in which the author puts into this book makes you truly feel like you will make it through...and then if you use the book correctly, YOU DO! I am going on the 3rd night of sleeping through the night and it's only been 3 weeks since we started this. Since the 3rd night we've only had 2 night wakings max and we don't ever have to take her out of the crib if we have to intervene. Using Pantley's suggestions she now loves her crib! It's wonderful! I was desperate and at the end of my rope. This book was a blessing! I recommend it to everyone.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not a Solution for Us I couldn't get past Pantley's phase 1. Whenever I put my child down, she screamed bloody murder. Pantley says if your child cries when you put them down, pick them up and start over again. It may take 4 or 5 tries, according to Pantley, in the beginning. Usually after the 8th try in two hours, we gave up and brought our daughter into bed with us. And then nobody got any quality sleep. I have since found relief with Ferber. When I actually decided to read his book, it made a lot of sense. He's not the heartless monster that he's portrayed as by many people. After the 4th night of the Ferber method she was sleeping 11 hours with only brief periods of non-wakeful whimpering through the night. She probably spent less time crying with Ferber, than she did in the couple months I spent trying to work with Pantley's ideas.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely amazing!!! That's the word I would use to describe the book. With my second daughter (who was just as the first one a terrible sleeper) a health visitor suggested I "let her cry it out". The result was both of us crying haf the night and now almost two years on, she still is a horrible sleeper. When I was pregnant with the little one, I read this book. We started the system when she was just three weeks old and she is a delight. She'll fall asleep on her own at night. When she wakes up for a feed, she'll drink, and go back to sleep.....just like that! No dummy's, no walking her to sleep, no endless crying, just blissfull sleep! She is happy, content and well rested, and I'll be too....as soon as I teach my middle daughter to sleep ;-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A real and gentle solution to teach your baby to sleep I found this book after an intense research of a solution to make may baby sleep a few hours all together because after 10 months without sleeping well my mind and body were not responding correctly. Despite of it, I could not even think of the idea of letting my baby cry out and make him suffer because an egoist need of mine. I did not why but my baby needed me to sleep a I had to be with him because I have decided to have a child a I had a responsibility for that. When I read the book I found all its comments and experiences completely reasonable. And I could also understand many of behaviors of my baby. I get identified with it so I knew I could be able to try those techniques. So I use all the patience that I had had for 10 month to dedicate 20 days to prove them. And it worked. My baby started to sleep more hours each night. I also used to thinking that might not happen in the short time but it did. I recommend this book to all the mothers that love their baby and need to sleep but knowing that their baby are sleeping happy and peacefully too, knowing that their mothers love them and they will be there for them if they needs them. I am very thankful with the book and Elizabeth Pantley for being so generous to sharing her experience and solutions to help other mother to change that non-nice situation. Give the book and your baby a chance and your life will change. Daniela from Argentina I am a proud mother of my loving baby

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful book!!!! If you are looking for a book that gives you a wonderful alternative to "cry it out", this is the book for you! I disagreed with doing anything but firm love to help my child learn to sleep and this book allows you to do that, plus with the variety of techniques, it seems to give longer lasting results without having to "reteach" your child after a sickness, etc...thank you Elizabeth!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not read this book if you want to keep your sanity. I bought this book with the hope that it would be the ultimate solution to all of my nighttime woes. Within the first two chapters it had me reduced to tears. It pretty much states the fact that if you ever let your child cry, you are denying them the basic need of their parent. I could not read past that. I have never felt like throwing a book in the trash until that day. I have since met other Moms who have read this book and have also found it unhelpful to the point of going past guilt and feeling like prisoners to their babies. Not wanting their infants to "suffer" by letting them cry. I would not recommend this book to any parent, guardian, grandparent, not to anyone who spends any kind of time with young children.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent, long-term results I first used the ideas from this book with my daughter, who has special needs. The moment I picked up the book, it made so much sense to me—to change a habit carefully, step by step, rather than trying to quit what we’d been doing since birth “cold turkey.” It took several months of patient work, but it was worth it. Every book I read tells me that children with her needs generally sleep poorly, but my daughter sleeps all night, every night. She is well-rested and that makes her better able to face her challenges and learn and grow. Since my son was born I haven’t worried about his sleep because I knew I could count on this book—and indeed, he is also learning how to sleep well. With patience, this book provides excellent long-term results and many peaceful nights.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from incredibly helpful This book has by far been the most helpful book that I have read pertaining to parenting books. Within a month of starting this book my son went from waking up twice a night to sleeping for 11 hours straight (he was 3.5 months by this point) I love her gentle aproach to sleep and how simple she made the aproach. I would definetly recommend this book to any and all parents with young children.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WONDERFUL What a powerful book. I was recommended this book by my daughters peds doctor and it helped me and my daughter 100%. Her words were just powerful. My daughter sleep without the assitance of me for an hour or two laying with her!! wonderful book. Highly recommend it for baby showers too!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally! I've read a lot of the books that are out there on sleep for babies, and this the only one I've found that's not cry-it-out dressed up in a new package to sell more books. There are no quick fixes in this book, but changing (or creating) sleep habits doesn't happen overnight! This is not a one size fits all solution, but you will find a variety of different tools to use to help YOUR child sleep better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book I'm a new mom and had no idea about baby stuff. My baby was about 2 months and I was totally sleep deprived...I didn't know what to do, everyone was telling me to let him "cry it out" - but I couldn't. Elizabeth's book really helped me to avoid the "crying out" solution and taught me so many valuable things which I think has helped my baby sleep better. I HIGHLY recommend this book to every mom. Good Luck!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EXCELLENT Book for New Moms I LOVE this book... Elizabeth Pantley's book was recommended to me from my daughter's peditrician... OH MY... I NEVER like hearing her cry for long periods of time, and hated the thought of that.. I am so happy and blessed that I found this book. Elizabeth found a gentle way to get your little angel to sleep, without all of the screaming and crying some other methods rave on. This book is a MUST for a new mommy, what a great gift for a baby shower!!!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Finally - The Harshness Is Gone! Finally, finally - a book that new moms can read and then feel good about themselves. I was so worried that I was the only new mom out there who couldn't bear to hear her baby crying herself to sleep every night, that I was starting to think I was in the wrong. The author does a fantastic job explaining that as moms we are wired to respond to our babies, and there's nothing wrong with that. Maybe this book is a little "duh," but that's exactly what I needed to hear - that the things I was trying such as a bedtime routine, etc., is just fine, and soon my baby will get it. Have you ever met a person yet that hasn't eventually learned to put themselves to sleep?? A great read!!! You should buy it!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EXCELLENT HI I purchased this book from the advice of my daughter's pediatrician. I never like the idea of my child CRYING herself to sleep. Mrs. Pantley offers a gentle way and very effective. This book helped my daughter who is now almost 4, this book is a must for any expecting mommy and for the new MOMs and dad's too :) A++++

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Utterly Useless This book is full of useless excerpts from other books and spends more time promoting breastfeeding and co-sleeping than anything. All the suggestions are, well, the only way to describe them are "duh!". If I hadn't of tried all of them all already on my own, I wouldn't be buying books looking for more answers. If you've already tried creating a night time routine and putting them to bed when they're already tired, you're already doing everything the author suggests.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredibly effective! I would recommend this to every parent of a newborn. There are so many tips included, in hindsight I can't even put my finger on one specific thing that was the solution. You just have to go through the little program and you'll see the results. I know when you're so sleep-deprived, having to read a book, let alone do any of the little assignments seems overwhelming, but it will pay off! In the first 3 months it seemed my son never slept more than 45 minutes at one time. I was beyond worn out and those nights were endless. Within two weeks of using these strategies he was sleeping 5 hours at night and by 4 months old he was sleeping at least 12 hours straight at night and 2 big naps thru the day. Now, at 17 months, he goes to sleep so happily at 7 pm, sleeps thru to 7 or 8 am and wakes up happy and refreshed, with a 2 hour nap each afternoon. I wish I had had access to this book for my older daughter. This makes for a much better mental state for all involved! All this without being forced to "cry it out."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent!!!! My son was waking up every hour or so and would not nap. After reading this book and following a plan for a month he is now sleeping all night and taking a daily two hour nap. I'm telling everyone who will listen about this great book.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Unsastified I tried this solution when my 6 month old was no longer sleeping through the night. He was waking 2x a night for a bottle. After a month of this, I tried E. Pantley's solution for 2 more months. This did not help us at all, and I spent more time awake than asleep. We went from 2x a night, to 4-6x. I would not recommend this book, as I also found that when you are searching for a solution, there is more reading and writing to do, then solving the problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I wish i'd found it sooner! Just to say how great the “no cry sleep solution” is. I did not discover the book until 2mths ago and what a difference it has made to my sons sleeping habits! My son has been an awful sleeper since birth. He is now 22mths and has gone from; *having no regular sleep pattern, being breastfed to sleep and waking up to six times a night to be fed to; *regular naptime, bedtime routine, falling to sleep with a story and sleeping most nights from 9.30pm to 7.30am. I could not believe it (especially as he has been a poor sleeper for such a long time). I found the book very interesting to read and the ideas simple to implement. There is a section that tells you how to log progress and I found this a real help with keeping me focused. I am so happy to find a book which actually looks at the needs of parents and children (rather than just encouraging parents to ‘leave’ the child to struggle with sleep). My only regret is that I didn’t find the book earlier and could have saved myself, husband and most importantly, son from struggling with sleep issues for so long.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from sleeping 11 hours This was the single best tool to continue to cosleep with my nursling toddler and to night-wean eventually to fully weaning. We are pregnant with our next baby, due in large part to this book, since I had to take fertility drugs and couldn't nurse. Once my child understood the soothing words, routine, etc. he and I adapted and now sleep soundly for 10-12 hours each night. We even used this for napping last year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sleep Deprived No More! After 8 weeks of not sleeping, this book came to me like manna from Heaven! My son at 6 months old was sleeping approximately 8.5 hours per day (almost all of them at night - he rarely napped - babies his age should be getting 14-15 hours of sleep per day- something else I learned from this book)and I was getting up every 2 hours at night with him. I was so sleep deprived, I could barely function. My husband thought I was going crazy (and I agreed!). I got Elizabeth's email address from Dr. Jack Newman in Toronto (a wonderful man and author! His Guide to Breastfeeding has helped me tremendously!) and immediately set forth implementing some of the suggestions in her book. 10 days later, the change is incredible! Kieran is now sleeping from 8 pm to 7 am with only one waking to feed and is napping 3-4 hours during the day. I feel like a new woman - re-energized and capable once again. This book has put me back on track and I'm able to be a better, more focused, attentive parent because of it. I highly, highly recommend it to anyone who's having trouble getting their baby to sleep!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sleep at Last! This book is fabulous and has saved our life. We were exhausted, having to get up 5 or 6 times a night with Oscar, our 1 year old. It was getting to the point where it seemed pointless even going to bed. I searched the internet for help and this book looked too good to be true. I don't agree with leaving them to cry so this book jumped out at me immediately. Elizabeth Pantley gives such brilliant advice and support. Her ideas for sleep routines and sleep cues are fabulous and you can just pick the ones that work for you. Oscar woke 5 times the first night, twice the second night and then 7pm to 7am ever since and he wakes up so happy from his restful sleep.. and so do we! There really is no need to suffer with lack of sleep. This book is all you need, its become our little Bible!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must read if you value your sleep!! I would recommend this book to anyone who cherishes their child enough to not want them to have to cry it out. That barbarian method of parenting is outdated and not nessessary. I read this book when I first brought my son home from the hospital and now at 4 months of age we have literally NO sleeping problems!!! I am the envy of all my friends and my son has never had to feel the horror of screaming for me and being left alone!! I love Elizabeth Pantley and my next child male or female will be named after her!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great book I read this book when I first brought my son home from the hospital and started doing some of the suggestions right from the beginning. My son is now a great little sleeper at 4 months old. He has never had to "cry it out" and has never had to feel the kind of anxiety that must go along with that barbarian style of parenting. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves there kids enough to try a new approach.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The BEST book on baby sleep As a midwife I work with many parents of babies. Sleep is always a major issue during those early months. This book has excellent information and instruction for parents. It is scientifically sound and reader friendly. The section on newborn babies is outstanding as it gives parents accurate information and helps them to create reasonable expectations. Once past the newborn stage this book gives many, many practical and useful ideas for helping a baby to sleep better without using controlled crying, which is often hard on parents and baby. An outstanding book that deserves recognition.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not the best bet for Canadian parents This book is not the best option for Canadian parents. Pantley doesn't make any mention at all of the Canadian Paediatric Society's recommendations about infants and sleep, nor does she reference other Canadian health authorities like Health Canada. She also fails to mention the top-notch sleep disorders clinic at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto or to talk about the work of leading Canadian experts on babies and sleep. Most Canadian parents would find Bonny Reichert's book In Search of Sleep to be a lot more useful and relevant.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The BEST sleep book out there If you are desperate for sleep but refuse to put your baby in his crib and let him cry himself to sleep - this book is for you. It's got so many different ideas! It guides you as you put together a custom sleep plan that is gentle for your baby BUT ALSO helps you get the sleep you crave. It is written in a friendly tone that reassures you along the way. My baby was waking up 8-10 times a night to breastfeed and now is waking only once. It's heaven!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super Alternative to Crying It Out This book is fantastic. Finally, a sleep book that recognizes that babies cry for a reason. Pantley's suggestions help people with lots of sleep styles - co-sleeping, crib sleeping, breast or bottle feeding. This is a book for parents who need some sleep but are sensitive to their child's needs as well. It explains how babies sleep and why letting babies cry is not the best answer. It's working for us!

Are you suffering through sleepless nights and having to fend off a barrage of heartless advice about letting your baby "cry it out"? The No-Cry Sleep Solution will show you how it is entirely possible and within your grasp to help your baby fall asleep peacefully--and stay asleep all night long.

Until now the only two ways to deal with sleepless nights were to let your baby cry herself to sleep or to become a sleep-deprived martyr and tough it out from dusk until dawn. At last, there is a practical and effective third way, thanks to Elizabeth Pantley, a parent educator and mother of four. Pantley is like a best friend who''s been there and is full of caring advice to help you and your baby get a good night''s sleep. Her ten-step will lead you through the process one day at a time by:

  • Shedding new light on your baby''s sleep patterns and helping you set realistic goals
  • Showing you how to analyze, assess, and improve your baby''s sleep patterns using sleep logs
  • Offering a variety of sleep solutions that fit every parenting style, whether you cosleep with your baby or she sleeps in a crib or whether you breastfeed or bottlefeed
  • Creating a tear-free customized sleep plan that works for both you and your baby

Don''t let sleep deprivation keep you from enjoying your baby. The No-Cry Sleep Solution is full of reassuring advice and words of wisdom from other parents who have had success with the program. It will give you the tools you need to effectively and gently reach your goal--a good night''s sleep for everyone.
