The One & Only is rated 2.6154 out of 5 by 13.
In her eagerly awaited new novel, beloved New York Times bestselling author Emily Giffin returns with an extraordinary story of love and loyalty—and an unconventional heroine struggling to reconcile both.

Thirty-three-year-old Shea Rigsby has spent her entire life in Walker, Texas—a small college town that lives and dies by football, a passion she unabashedly shares. Raised alongside her best friend, Lucy, the daughter of Walker’s legendary head coach, Clive Carr, Shea was too devoted to her hometown team to leave. Instead she stayed in Walker for college, even taking a job in the university athletic department after graduation, where she has remained for more than a decade.

But when an unexpected tragedy strikes the tight-knit Walker community, Shea’s comfortable world is upended, and she begins to wonder if the life she’s chosen is really enough for her. As she finally gives up her safety net to set out on an unexpected path, Shea discovers unsettling truths about the people and things she has always trusted most—and is forced to confront her deepest desires, fears, and secrets.

Thoughtful, funny, and brilliantly observed, The One & Only is a luminous novel about finding your passion, following your heart, and, most of all, believing in something bigger than yourself . . . the one and only thing that truly makes life worth living.

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved! Interesting to see so many negative reviews on this book; I loved it, and actually felt rather disappointed when it ended. I wanted to hear more about the characters! I've read all of Emily Giffin's books, and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. Give this one a chance...!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed! I struggled to finish this book! I agree with the other reviews, the characters were not engaging, the relationships were random and just plain weird, and nothing really happened! I couldn't get into it but stuck it out because I thought it would get better. It didn't. The description doesn't speak to how much of the book is about football, and even so, it was not a good read. Would not recommend!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't bother Horrid. Predictable girl-abandoned-by-her-father-falls-in-love-with-father-figure story line. Won't even get into the problematic subplot reinforcing stereotypes re. sexual violence. So disappointing from an author whose work I have loved in past.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible I wish I had never purchased this book. I do love Canadian football, but not college/American football. I'm stuck on Chapter 7 hoping this book would get better but it doesn't. It is boring. It is not a nice summer read. I'm donating this book to a charity in the hopes they can raise some money. I wasted mine and I'm not amused. I won't be buying her next book. I'm really soured on her writing. I had to give it a rating, but I didn't want to. There is no zero!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The one and Only - very good I just could not put it down.. 1st I love sports and love loyalty and this just hit home for me. I did feel a bit nervous about who her one and only was but at the end, everybody needs to be happy. Great Story, will probably read it again

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Don't Waste Your Time As my review title says, don't waste your time reading this book. I am a fan of Emily Giffin (have even met her at a book signing), so I was excited to read her new novel. It was such a boring plot, most of the time dragging about football, which to be fair, I have no interest in. I didn't enjoy the non-football aspects either. Of course, the main character gets what she wants in the end, which seemed an unrealistic reality. I wouldn't recommend it to others

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome summer read! Loved the book. Giffin explored a few topics that could some people may not be used to, but if she hadn't it would've been just like every other chick lit out there.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing! I bought this book with my Mother's Day gift card--a real treat to buy hardcover. I was so disappointed with this read. The characters were not engaging, the plot was boring and, even for chick lit, there was no depth to the book.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not her best work and the gross factor I really have enjoyed her past works but I just couldn't get into this book. It wasn't about the theme of football but the character and relationship that was established between the characters. It wasn't the older man thing but more-so who he was - I just kept cringing. I just couldn't relate and I kept putting it down.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not her best work I have read all of Emily Giffin's books and found this one the worst of them. I mean, I love her books. I found this one far from reality, couldn't relate at all. I mean I kept reading it because I was intrigued but not in an enjoyable way. It was an average read, light fluff but glad I got it from the library. I think I need to go read Something Blue and Something Borrowed again.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not Giffin's Strongest I am a big fan of Emily Giffin - have read everyone of her previous books. But I was a little disappointed with this one. I found the premise of the book to be a little far-fetched, and the storyline to be a bit predictable. An easy and quick book, but not the engrossing read that I have come to expect with Giffin.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from The One & Only Thank goodness I got this book out of the library...very disappointing!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great summer read and I could not put it down. I have enjoyed every single book that Emily Giffin has written. However, sometimes, the author's novels become formulaic. When I picked up "The One & Only", I did not know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. The character, Shea, was likable and Emily really conveyed the struggle and heartache throughout the novel. I could not put down the book, and kept reading to find out what happened. I recommend it for a summer beach read!

Editorial Reviews

“Emily Giffin is a talented writer who always comes up with a plot that is just a bit different than anything others are writing about at the time. . . . She also has a knack for creating a variety of characters and making them all feel fully developed. Plus she can add twists and turns to her plot without breaking the rhythm of her writing or its believability. . . . Find a shady spot; get a cool drink, and just luxuriate in the joy of a book well written.”
—Huffington Post

“Emily Giffin’s specialty is writing about relationships, especially when they are messy and complicated. . . . The One & Only is one to read.”
—The Washington Post

“Emily Giffin is known for telling a good love story. . . . The One & Only is no exception.”
—Metro

“Chicklit powerhouse Emily Giffin’s playful prose will draw you in, and the hot-and-heavy make-out scenes don’t hurt either. . . . The One & Only embraces, then promptly breaks all the stereotypes.”
—Chatelaine
