The Outsiders

The Outsiders is rated 4.7602 out of 5 by 196.
The 45th anniversary of a landmark work of teen fiction

Ponyboy can count on his brothers and his friends, but not on much else besides trouble with the Socs, a vicious gang of rich kids who get away with everything, including beating up greasers like Ponyboy. At least he knows what to expect--until the night someone takes things too far.

Written forty-five years ago, S. E. Hinton''s classic story of a boy who finds himself on the outskirts of regular society remains as powerful today as it was the day it was written.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from amazing book, great story! I watched the movie then started reading this as class reading for school but it was so good that I bought it and read ahead of the class. You get attached to the characters and might even shed a tear or two, I know I did. The Outsiders is a wonderful book that takes you into the lives of sensitive young boys who have it hard everyday of their live but keep going with the help of true friends. I really recommend this book to everyone!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Read I'm not going to lie when our teacher first told us we would be reading a book where the main character's name was Ponyboy I wasn't expecting much but by the end of the first chapter I was hooked. The author write's a book that;s realistic yet not talked about often. The book had me laughing one second then crying the next. Everyone should read this book, I don't know anyone who didn't love this book.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really, really great for teens I read this book with my class and i thought it was really good. Way better then I expected, even if it is based in the past and I usually hate books based in the past. The writing was good, and the ending was fantastic. It was boring at times, and we read it out loud in class, which always takes me a while to process. Overall, really, really great for teens

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it since Grade 8 This is one of my all time favorite books. I think I've read it about 10 times. This book made me want to read all of her books. S.E. Hinton is a fabulous writer. This book will make you laugh and cry. I wish everyone got to read it in Grade 8. You'll never forget what true friendship means. These boys lived and died for each other. If you get the chance read it. I've never met anyone who's read it and didn't like it.

It is a classic and a great read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Book for Teenagers I had to read The Outsiders for English class when I was in secondary three. Each year, teachers ask their students to read several books and some of them doesn't always relate to teenagers interests. The Outsiders was the first english book that I enjoyed reading. English being my second langage, I only read English books when I have to. S.E. Hinton's novel was the first English book that I loved. That is why I recommend it to any student looking for a good book. Why did I enjoy it so much? Simply because the characters are teenagers so I could easily relate to the emotions they are going through. The Outsiders is a story of friendship and love between a group of friends.

The ending was really smart :) i recommend this book .

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This book was from the heart I think this book was from the heart because it shows emotions from boys. These boys r from a gang to, and u don t really see emotions from guys or even a gang member. The book was a great thing to read because we see how gang memebers are.How they work ,and live. Wat they do in the free time, and all sorts of other things. They kinda showed us that gang memebers back in the past weren t soo bad as they are in the present. They show alot of love for each other and thats how life is caring and believing

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It was very good This novel was very interesting. It's a great drama novel that shows real freindship. Its also a pretty sad story. The Outsiders is about two gangs and a boy runnning away frrom home. The main character, Ponyboy, sounds that he has been through a lot, since two of his friends had died. I would say The Outsiders is a must read novel.

The outsiders tell that how 2 gangs and a boy ran away from home. After reading the story, its sounds/looks like he been through a lot in his life. It has some sad parts which include that his Ponyboy's best friend dies. but it was an awesome book

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing Book I think that this is a good book because it's about two different kinds of people, the 'Greasers' and the 'Socials'.Ponyboy and Johnny were one of the main characters in this book, and its about them handling their life with other class of people like the Greasers. The author that wrote this book really understands how people now a days. This book was worth the read, because it was really interesting. It was a realistic book, but although it's a little bit sad at the end.If you buy this book,I'm sure you won't be dissapointed. But overall, this book was amazing. My class and I read this book, and a lot of people found it very interesting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Real I picked this book up with slight hesitation. I wasn't sure if a novel about some boys in gangs would interest me. But this book is so much more than that. S.E. Hinton, a mere 16 years old when she wrote this book, has done something really great here. The thing that hit me most about this book was its honesty. Hinton doesn't hold back. She tells it like it is, and that just pulls you in even more, leaving you hanging on every word. It's one book that if I had time I would love to re-read. I'd definitely recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Book! I have read this book 20 times and I love it. If you have read it check out That Was Then This Is Now. Some of the characters from The Outsiders have a small part in it. Its awesome to see your favorite characters in another book. I think im going to have to read all Hinton's books now. You should too!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a heart warming story The story of Ponyboy and his brothers facing life in a gang can be pretty tough when your best friend kills another gang member and your forced to runaway. Who thought that a scum bag teenager could become a hero? The choices we make are not always the best and sometimes we have to pay for it. In the end you find out the greasers are not gang they are a family that will always remember to "stay gold"

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Classic for all teens I highly recommend this book for all teens to read. As a Grade 7/8 teacher this is one book I never have to coax my students into reading! A classic coming of age tale that all kids can identify with- themes of identity, friendship, stereotypes, gangs and family. All parents should buy this for their children.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great! The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is an exciting novel that children from grades 6 to 8 will especially enjoy. This is because they will be interested in learning about gangs and the problems that are associated with them. It is a great story that teaches a good lesson. There are many interesting characters that have their own unique personalities. The Outsiders is about the life of Ponyboy Curtis, who is a part of the gang called the Greasers. The Socs are the rivals of the Greasers. Ponyboy lives with his brothers and has no parents. What difficulties does Ponyboy face because he is a part of a gang?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing I read this book soon after I had completed Catcher in the Rye and I enjoyed this one more than Catcher. Among the many reasons that I enjoyed it more was due to the fact that the story seemed to flow much better and it was also a bit more realistic than that of Holden Caulfield's. While I realize that the main characters from each book was from a different socio-economic class, the characters of The Outsiders were much more easily identifiable than those of Catcher in the Rye.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Book ! The Outsiders was a magnificent book! The book gives a good picture of how it was back in the day when groups or hoods ruled each side of town. In this one it was the greasers and the socs. Ponyboy- the main character- did a really good job narrating this book as we find out in the end was all for a english assignment. His detail was awesome. The conflict between the greasers and socs was extremely attractive and easy to understand. Definetly a winner !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Social Dilema. Aren't we all just able to caputer how much we have in common with this book. The author honestly caputred a really good outlook on the way we live life. We are always fighting for status. And this book is a perfect example of this fight. I have never ever read a better book, I honestly would recommend that all of you who would love to learn more about the social fight you should read this book. It will explain so much and yet you'll see how imperfect society truly is!

Rated out of 5 by from Definitely Recommend I absolutely love this book. Everything about it has already been said here but I thought I should mention that because of this book, my brother who was until recently "allergic" to books (or so he said) now reads A LOT. It was really good, really sad, and said a lot about teens. I love how it ended - it was sad, but there was hope.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More then just a book I, like many other Canadians and other students, were expected to read this book in grade school, I remmeber reading it vaguely in grade six, though at that young age I had yet to take a liking to reading. Like most books that are forced upon me to read in school, I hardly read the book. I watched the movie with my eyes half shut, I just wasn't interested in what the school wanted me to read. Though at a slightly older age once I got out of grade school I discovered The Outsiders on a shelf in the near by Coles store just an hour away. I picked it up, and thought the title was familiar, then put it down. Later that day I mentioned it to my dad and knowing that by that age I was an avid reader, he highly suggested it. Am I ever glad I picked it up. S.E. Hinton is one of those authors that just understands how people think and feel. Her characters are so well rounded that when they hurt, you hurt, when they are sad, your sad, and when they are happy, you are filled with joy. This novel is a timelss novel, the moral shall never change and people of all ages will continue to read this book for generations to come. I must read it at least once a month, its such a small book, but it certainly has quite the impact on a person.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Inside The Outsiders To Ponyboy, there are only two kinds of people: Greasers and Socs. Socs are the West side rich kids, the ones with money. A Greaser is an outsider from the East, poor and a hood. Ponyboy is a Greaser, recently orphaned when his parents are killed in an auto wreck. Ponyboy and his older brothers all belong to a gang. One night, someone takes things too far, leading to a series of events that change Ponyboy's whole perspective of his world, and everyone in it. This book is a classic, and a must-read. It's short, so you can easily read it in one sitting. This gripping novel is really hard to put down, and I recommend it to everyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brittany, the ignorant Yes, in Canada many of us were "forced" to read this book, whether in grade 5, 6, 7 or any other grade. However, I can tell you from first-hand experience this is the first book that was part of the curriculum that I actually finished. The fact that this book was written by a teenager doesn't take way from it one bit, it is an incredible story of hardship, loyalty and discovery. It shows us that no matter what side of the tracks you're from you can be "golden".

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One Word This book is one of the best I've read. It's right up there with Harry Potter - and that's saying something. I was forced to read it in grade 7 and I refused to, I am not forced into anything. Then my mom saw the book. It was a big thing in the 80's so she'd read it and made me read it. It was the best thing she's ever made me do. The characters are so real and so well described. They act so life-like and one thing I like about that is that there grammar and English is not perfect. That's the thing that annoys me about some books where the characters speak perfect English. This is a classic book and I recommend it to everyone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Socs and Greasers on one side of town lived the greasers. on the other side of town lived the socs(socials). the socs had money and popularity, the greasers were poor. the socs beat up and tormented the greasers, untill one night when a soc took things too far. billy the soc could have killed poor ponyboy but his friend johnny killed him with his switchblade. then began ponyboys and johnnys escape from town avoiding police. its what happenes after that scares us all. the outsiders is a story of how people used to live in towns like this one and the way people changed from then and today. its a great book that you cant keep your eyes off of!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Like most people who experience this book, I was in school when I first read it. In the span of about 3 years, I have read this books 4 or 5 times, and it has become one of my all time favourite books, alongside Tex, also written by S.E. Hinton. Once you start reading this book, no matter how many times you have read it before, you just can't put it down, because Hinton has a way of writing, that anybody can relate to the characters, and to the struggles that they endure. S.E. Hinton is an amazing author, and I recommend all her books to anyone who wants to read a really great book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ordinary? Ponyboy is a fourteen year-old. He trys to appear tough, but is really confused and sensitive. When his parents died, he became very attached to his borthers. When a rivalry gang, kills ponyboys best friend, his world turns upside down. The Socs and the Greasers are even more against each other than ever! This is a great book, and a very light/easy read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from the outsiders The Outsiders is probably my favorite book. I nearly died from the suspence when reading it i needed to go to next period in school or eat breakfast. As a Gr.7 student it really shows you that some people have it pretty bad. Also, after you understand some of the secret meanings it's very touching. I'd recomend The Outsiders to any reader who like action, drama, and suspence.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from #1 book, so go read it! ok, hi, well first of all i'd like to say that s.e. hinton rocks! making such a great book at the age of 16.. wOw! i really believe she capures everything she wants to in this book. being a teenager herself at the time, she could relate and that's how she made a great novel. i felt i related to the book also, as she made Ponyboy -the main character, very realistic; to the point i thought i knew ponyboy. my grade 8 teacher read this to my english class, and then we watched the movie. look, i loved the book and i know you will, so do yourself a favor, and forget the movie, it's nothing compared to the book! trust me. they do not capture the feeling of what all adolescents go through- s.e. hinton does in the novel. i don't want to tell you anymore as it will ruin the book for you, now go out and read this book! ok well a little more..(hehe) i just know you will love The Outsiders.. hello? have you read the other reviews? like only a couple people didn't like it but they wouldn't know a great book if it slapped them in the face- oh yeah.. this one just did! if you hate reading you'll still love this book, trust me -because half the kids in my class are NOT readers (i soOoOo am!) and they loved this book. lots of love to all that love this book and to all that will! ~Lydia :) :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Outsiders: a warp between reality and fiction. KudsoThe Outsiders is the best book written ever ! It pulls its readers into a world between reality and fiction . The Greasers become your best friends and the Socs' become your enemies. You feel hatred towards Bob, sympathy for Johnny Cade, if your a girl , you have crushlike feelings for Soda Pop. You get so many surreal feelings when you read this book . I found it hard to live with out it. Kudos to S.E Hinton .

CAN'T WAIT!!!! but you've got 2 read the book!

I don't like books that much, and when our gr 7 English teacher gave us this, I thought it would be another boring book we have to read. But this book was not boring at all, it was one of the few books I actually enjoyed a lot. I also saw the movie, and I thought that was good too. I recommend both the book and the movie to everyone! Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Outsiders: A Compelling Novel The Outsiders is a captivating novel told in the perspective of a lower class "greaser" named Ponyboy. It is a realistic representation of the lives of teenagers and their struggles against themselves and society. The novel gave me a new outlook on the hardships in the lives of the lower class society. I was completely immersed in the story and characters from the time I picked up the book, and I would recommend it to any teenager in search of a good read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Inspiring We read and studied this book in our English class. It was one of the most inspirational and meaningful books of my life. Growing up in a high class family made me apreciate all the things i had. You felt you could connect with the protagonist Ponyboy Curtis because of his troubled adolescent life. All adolescents have troubled lives no matter how big or small. After reading and studying the book in class we had a chance to watch the video.Unfortunatley the movie did not even compare to the book. Sadly the video reuined one of the most meaningful and unforgetable book for me. If you are thinking of reading this book i suggest you do not go anywhere near the movie.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Outsiders... A really good book. I would recommend this for teenagers and young adults, and especially for people that like books that are in a different time period. I have read this book for school and I would give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 because of the action, and s.e. hinton puts quite a lot of detail in this book. Although The Outsiders has about only 12 chapters, each chapter includes vivid descriptions. I think that you would enjoy this book, I know I have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Friendship and Belonging As students of grade nine we had to read this book for school. Last year we had to read Invitation To The Game and it wasn't very interesting, being all futuristic and impossible to happen. So we thought this would be a repeat. The main character, Ponyboy, made us think that the book was boring. But you really get sucked in. There are many resemblences to our lives and thats why we could really relate to Ponyboy. That is why we really enjoyed this book of Friendship of Belonging.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from "The Outsiders", is "In" Being in grade 8, it is hard for teachers to find a book that will interest the kids, but will also have us feeling that we have learned something. When my class read the book "The Outsiders" by S.E Hinton, everyone just wanted to keep reading. I know that made my teacher feel a sense of accomplishment. The Outsiders is a book that will leave you wanting more. I didn't want to put it down. It was so great to actually read a book that makes you feel so involved. It's a story about friendship, love and courage. It is about a 14 year old boy, who lives with his two older brothers, after their parents died. They live in a poor neighbourhood and are part of a gang called "the greasers". The caring and friendship between these people is astounding. It isn't easy for them, being judged and not having all the good breaks- like their enemies, "the socs"...which is short for "the socials". The characters go through forever-life-changing experiences and deal with so much in their lives, it's un believable. It takes place in the 50-60's and I can guarantee that no matter what age the reader, you will only feel touched from this heroic story =)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very Tuff! The Outsiders was a very good book, that the author wrote very well from the point of a 14 year old. There was a little too much fighting and slang for my preferance but it was still a very good book. I encourage you to read it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome This book was really good. There are so many parts of the book where you just can't put it down. I know that I couldn't put it down, it was so discriptive and capavating. It was really realistic as well. It portrays the life and times of kids growing up on the poor side of town and how friendships grow to become so strong that is overwelming. This book makes you feel many emotions at the same time! I cried many times in this book, because of the word and how it describes the sadness. It's truly hard to believe that a 15 year old at the time wrote this book. I would expect an adult to write this book but not a 15 year old. If you have never read this book read it! You won't regret I have read the ending about 20 times and i never get bored of it and I crie eveytime!

I would recommend this book to anyone over the age of 12, or 13.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My absolute FAV!!! "The Outsiders" has to be my favourite book of all time. From front to back it is just a remarkable story that captures your mind and your heart. Hinton does an incredible job of drawing in her readers and keeping them fixated upon the lives of these troubled but wholesome teens. I recommend this book to anyone who feels that there just aren't enough books out there from a teens point of view. Reading this story is time well spent. I've read it over and over again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Way Tuff! Thats only one of the phrases you'll hear in this 1960s drama and action novel about being in a street gang. I usually read fantasy novels, so when I finished this book I had wide eyes. Maybe you don't like these violent books, But the violence is only a portion of the novel. It is also a tear jerker ( I even had tears! ). Overall this is a great book for anyone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A look into "The Outsiders..." While reading this wonderful story, you will not be able to stop your eyes from reading sentence after sentence. Ponyboy, a young boy who is around the age of fourteen, is part of the Greasers. The Greasers live on the East side and aren't as wealthy as the Socs. The Greasers are usually jumped by the Socs which has already happened to Johnny. As the story goes on, there are many things that happen which are unpredictable. I don't want to ruin the story, so go out and keep reading!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Outsiders The story is about two warring social classes of a city, the Greasers and the Socs. Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must-Read Thriller! The Outsiders is the story about the Socs - a viscous gang of high-class rich kids- and the Greasers - a gang of lower class struggling kids - and the on going 'battles they have. If you want to read a book with suspense - action - and drama- this is your best choice. This is one of the rare books where I really actually felt as if I was part of the gang - and felt everything they did. I give this 5 stars for its creativity, and thrilling aspect- and that fiction can seem so real. A MUST READ BOOK FOR TEENS!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Outsiders There is not many people in this world that can write a novel at the age of sixteen, but yet S.E. Hinton did just that! At first the book looked boring, "Ya whatever! A Kid depresed, same old same old." But yet when I stared reading this novel I was taken away. Her description of the character's was amazing! Like I knew them! Like it was a huge picture book, and when I read it, it was like I was there. Like I walked into their lives. The novel is all about your place in life. Are you rich and popular, or are you poor and greasey. As for poor Ponyboy he was just that. Poor and a greaser, always afraid that the "socials" or "socs" will come and jump him. But yet Pony is different he see's everyone in a different light. Find out, when you read this novel about victory, heartbrakes and how it's like being a kid when all you got on your mind is "Paul Newman and a Ride home"

Rated 3 out of 5 by from disapointed I took this book from the library read half way through the book and stopped because it was so boring. My three friends read it at the same time and two of them finished it and the other one stopped about the same place as I did and started reading another book which was more interesting. This is my opinion of the book but you should read and see for your self.

About the Book

When it was first published in 1967, "The Outsiders" defied convention with its immediate, deeply sympathetic portrayal of Ponyboy and his struggle to find a place for himself in a difficult world.

From the Publisher

The 45th anniversary of a landmark work of teen fiction

Ponyboy can count on his brothers and his friends, but not on much else besides trouble with the Socs, a vicious gang of rich kids who get away with everything, including beating up greasers like Ponyboy. At least he knows what to expect--until the night someone takes things too far.

Written forty-five years ago, S. E. Hinton''s classic story of a boy who finds himself on the outskirts of regular society remains as powerful today as it was the day it was written.

About the Author

From Our Editors

Junior Booklover Contest Winner Riley, age 13, from Calgary, AB "Nature's first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay." ...recites Ponyboy Curtis, to his 16-year-old friend Johnny, as they sit on the front steps of the abandoned church they are temporarily calling home. "Robert Frost wrote it," he says to Johnny, as the sun slides upward in front of them. "He meant more to it than I'm getting', though." An amazing and touching tale of friendship, and at the same time, a depiction of the pointlessness of fighting and rivalry, The Outsiders tells the story of Ponyboy, who is fourteen and the youngest of three brothers in a family with no parents. His older brothers work hard to support their small, yet surprisingly tightly-knit family. All three are Greasers, living on the west (and poor) side of town, with their friends Two-Bit, Steve, Johnny and Dallas. The Greasers are sworn enemies of the east-end Socials, known as Socs. The Socs are, for the most part, rich, and are known on the west side as nothing more than white trash with Mustangs (the car). Following a violent gang fight, Johnny and Ponyboy escape town. Tragedy strikes twice as Johnny suffers a life-threatening injury, further fuelling the Greasers' hatred of the Socs. The fierce animosity between the two gangs in not sugar-coated, coming to a conclusive showdown at the v
