DUTTON ADULT | December 31, 2013 | Hardcover

The Purity Of Vengeance: A Department Q Novel is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 2.
Jussi Adler-Olsen’s Department Q series, with more than fourteen million copies sold worldwide, continues with the most chilling cold case yet.

In 1987, Nete Hermansen plans revenge on those who abused her in her youth, including Curt Wad, a charismatic surgeon who was part of a movement to sterilize wayward girls in 1950s Denmark.

More than twenty years later, Detective Carl Mørck already has plenty on his mind when he is presented with the case of a brothel owner, a woman named Rita, who went missing in the eighties: New evidence has emerged in the case that destroyed the lives of his two partners—the case that sent Carl to Department Q.

But when Carl’s assistants, Assad and Rose, learn that numerous other people disappeared around the same weekend as Rita, Carl takes notice. As they sift through the disappearances, they get closer and closer to Curt Wad, who is more determined than ever to see the vision of his youth take hold and whose brutal treatment of Nete and others like her is only one small part of his capacity for evil.

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Thought-Provoking Case Centres on Eugenics and Forced Abortions I love this series! I did find this one a bit different than the previous ones thus had a slow start but once I got into the plot it was great reading from then on. The difference here is that it isn't quite the same type of crime story/investigation. The reader knew what was going on as the narrative switched from the real-time events in the past of the crime being committed and the current events of the Carl's Q squad investigation. There's also a third narrative which goes even further back in history to the perpetrator's backstory. It isn't until quite close to the end that the reader is given a twist and a shock and we are finally surprised with something. While I do find the mystery of not knowing the perpetrator more exciting, I can also enjoy this type of presentation as well, as we watch how the police manage to track down the person we know who is hiding. I must say I also found the theme of this book, forced abortions and eugenics, highly thought-provoking. I am pro-life and with both of these issues no less prevalent in today's world than they were in the '50s was very well-pleased with how the subject was handled. The last book concentrated on Rose, giving us insight into her character. Now, this 4th book, concentrates on Hassad. He is such a mysterious character that we aren't exactly given any answers but we are shown more of him and his character allowing our thoughts and speculation to being that much closer to the truth. Originally, this was promoted as a four book series but with the ending of this book, it is obvious a sequel will be continuing the story and I would really hope we have many more yet to come!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Something New in the Mystery Genre Jussi Adler-Olsen is a Danish author with a huge following right across Europe. I have been enjoying the Department Q series since it first arrived here in North America and each time another is released I have to read it right away. I have enjoyed all the books and am always amazed how each book is better than the last......the translation is excellent and so smooth it would never cross your mind you were reading a translation. If you like lots of action, well defined characters, and some quirky humor and a lovely twisted surprise at the end, then this series is for you......enjoy!!!!

The cool, delicate champagne glass between her fingers, the hum of voices, and the light hand of her husband at her waist. Apart from being in love, only brief flashbacks of a distant childhood reminded her of it. The security of her grandmother’s chatter. Subdued laughter as she fell into a slumber. The laughter of people long since gone. Nete pressed her lips together to stem the emotion. Sometimes it got the better of her. She collected herself and gazed out upon the palette of colorful evening gowns and proud figures. The celebratory banquet in honor of the Danish recipient of the year’s Nordic Prize for Medicine had drawn many guests. Scholars, physicians, pillars of society. Circles into which she certainly hadn’t been born but in which she nevertheless had come to feel increasingly comfortable as the years passed. She took a deep breath and was about to let out a contented sigh when she became acutely aware that a pair of eyes had latched onto her through the array of festive coiffures and men in tight bow ties. Editorial Reviews

“This series has enough twists to captivate contemporary mystery readers and enough substance and background to entertain readers with historical and literary tastes.”
—Library Journal (starred review) on A Conspiracy of Faith

"From the busy efforts of forensics to some riveting train-and-car chasing near the end, there is no lack of action in A Conspiracy of Faith."
—Houston Chronicle

“A shattering parable of honest individuals caught up in the corruption of our times.”
—Publishers Weekly (starred review) on A Conspiracy of Faith

“Comparisons [to Stieg Larsson] are inevitable and, while he may lack a Salander, Adler-Olsen’s prose is superior to Larsson’s, his tortures are less discomfiting, and he has a sense of humor.”
—Booklist (starred review) on The Keeper of Lost Causes

“Adler-Olsen, Denmark’s leading crime fiction author, outdoes his outstanding debut, The Keeper of Lost Causes, with his second Department Q novel.”
