The Secret is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 5.
Judith Hampton was as beautiful as she was proud and loyal. Her dear Scottish friend from childhood was about to give birth, and Judith had promised to be at her side. But there was another, private reason for the journey from her bleak English home to the Highlands: to meet the father she had never known, the Laird Maclean. Nothing prepared her, however, for the sight of the Scottish barbarian who was to escort her into his land...Iain Maitland, Laird of his clan, a man more powerfully compelling than any she had ever encountered.
In a spirited clash of wills and customs, Judith reveled in the melting bliss of Iain''s searching kisses, his passionate caresses. Perplexed by her sprightly defiance, bemused by her tender nature, Iain felt his soul growing into the light and warmth of her love. Surely nothing would wrench her from the affection and trust of Iain and his clan...not even the truth about her father, a devastating secret that could shatter the boldest alliance, and the most glorious of loves!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great women can change everthing! Judith and her best friend Frances Catherine have supported each other and kept each other secrets since they were little, and now that Frances Catherine is having her first child she would like her best friend there. The problem is the Judith is English and Frances Catherine is Scottish. Frances Catherine gets her way in the end and a group of warriors are sent to get Judith. In that group is the Laird Iain, along to do this errand for his brother’s expectant wife. On the way back Judith and Iain find that they are smitten with each other, but they both agree that nothing can come of it. Judith worries that Iain will find out that her father is the Laird of the Maclean clan, the Maitland’s enemy. Iain on the other hand has a clan to take care of, and no time for anything. When Iain figures out who Judith’s father is, he marries her to keep her safe. Iain will deal with the repercussions of his wife’s father later. All he knows is that he can’t let her go, and the thought of Judith taking another man as a husband is unthinkable. Judith is pulled into the community by helping one, and then more and more women as a midwife. She is untrained in the role, but does everything to help these women. As Judith learns more and more about the clan, she discovers that the women don’t have free time, don’t have a say with the elders and many times are forgotten all together. With the encouragement of Iain, Judith tires to make daily life for the women easier. Judith brings many changes, all of which slowly take hold in the clan for the better. As the days pass Judith and Iain get closer and closer, but they still have many unspoken things between them. Judith and some warriors are captured by the Macleans. Judith tries not to let the Maclean leader, her father, know that she is Iain’s wife for surely he would use that against Iain. When Iain comes alone to rescue his wife, all the secrets start coming out. What happened between Judith’s parents, why Iain married Judith, why Judith’s mom tied her father, what Judith’s mom was like to Judith’s half-brother…. In the end Judith does not know who or what to believe. Judith does know that she loves Iain, but the clan will no longer let her stay know that they know who her father is. This was such a great book. There is so much romance, secrets and lots of babies. This was a great highlander storey, and I love highlanders! ***SPOILIER*** I really like how in the end Judith makes the greatest impact on the clan even though she is a silly English woman. They change how the clan is run, and Judith will have her husband and get to know the family that was denied her. Plus she has a whole new family in the Maitland clan, and will forever be with her best friend. Oh so good!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Garwood's #1 in my book! I've read every romance novel Julie Garwood has written up to this date and I have to say that "The Secret" is my favorite of the bunch. I'm sure I'll have trouble expressing myself here, but I've read this book over 20 times and I still read every word from cover to cover. I love how she makes her FERMALE characters the heros and has them rescue the "big strong MAN" once in a while. Her historicals are by far the ones I enjoy the most, but her tale of friendship, companionship and loyality from this novel will get you every time.

Read from the Book

From Chapter One Iain Maitland was a mean son of a bitch when he was riled. He was riled now. The black mood came over him the minute his brother Patrick told him about the promise he''d given his sweet wife, Frances Catherine. If Patrick had wanted to surprise his brother, he''d certainly accomplished that goal. His explanation had rendered Iain speechless. The condition didn''t last long. Anger quickly took over. In truth, the ridiculous promise his brother had given his wife wasn''t nearly as infuriating to Iain as the fact that Patrick had called the council together to render their official opinion on the matter. Iain would have stopped his brother from involving the elders in what he considered to be a private, family matter, but he''d been away from the holding at the time, hunting down the Maclean bastards who''d waylaid three unseasoned Maitland warriors, and when he''d returned home, weary but victorious, the deed had already been done. Leave it to Patrick to take a simple issue and complicate the hell out of it. It was apparent he hadn''t consider any of the ramifications of his rash behavior. Iain, as the newly appointed laird over the clan, would now be expected to put his duties to his immediate family aside, his loyalty, too, and act solely as the council''s advisor. He wasn''t about to meet those expectations, of course. He would stand beside his brother no matter how much opposition came from the elders. He wouldn''t allow Patrick to be punished, either. And
