Two-time Governor General''s Award nominee Teresa Toten is back with a compulsively readable new book for teens!

When Adam meets Robyn at a support group for kids coping with obsessive-compulsive disorder, he is drawn to her almost before he can take a breath. He''s determined to protect and defend her--to play Batman to her Robyn--whatever the cost. But when you''re fourteen and the everyday problems of dealing with divorced parents and step-siblings are supplemented by the challenges of OCD, it''s hard to imagine yourself falling in love. How can you have a "normal" relationship when your life is so fraught with problems? And that''s not even to mention the small matter of those threatening letters Adam''s mother has started to receive . . .

Teresa Toten sets some tough and topical issues against the backdrop of a traditional whodunit in this engaging new novel that readers will find hard to put down.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A brilliant coming of age novel ! I couldn't put this book down once I started. Toten does an excellent job if creating multi-dimensional characters that you really grow to care about. Adam is a sweet, struggling teen with so many obstacles but still ends up to be a superhero. This is a great portrait of OCD without being trite. A great read for teens and adults.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Captivating I loved this book! It was funny, heart warming and heart-wrenching all in turn. Definitely deserved the Governor General's award that it won!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 5 Superhero Stars This book is a love story, a coming-of-age story, and a fascinating story of living with obsessive compulsive disorder. It's also one of the most heartfelt books I've read this year. Teresa Toten takes us on a journey through the eyes of Adam, an absolutely swoon-worthy teenage boy who is not only struggling with his own OCD, but also with the issues of those in his world. Adam is a young man who just wants everyone and everything to be Normal. This book is a must read for everyone. It's not your typical YA read. It's easy to see a little bit of ourselves in this beautifully written and unputdownable book! 5 Superhero Stars!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Definitely enjoyed When fourteen year old Adam meets slightly older Robyn at the support group for teens coping with OCD, he's immediately drawn to her. He wants to know her, help her, protect her. But Adam's already dealing with divorced parents, a young stepbrother, and his own challenges with OCD. Plus his mother's been receiving threatening letters. First, I think this book did a really good job showing how hard it is to live with OCD, the different aspects, different triggers, the different ways it affects different people. Adam's a character that was really easy to feel for. His fear for his family, his frustration, his confusion, desperation, wanting to get better. So much about him felt realistic. I really enjoyed the support group sessions and how they slowly started trusting each other and becoming friends, and Adam's relationships with his mom, dad, stepmom, and little brother. His struggle was so heartbreaking. I also like that the lists Adam's therapist asked him to write for homework were included and, with the members of the support group choosing(mostly) superheroes for alter-egos, there was a touch of comic book every once and again. Out of all the others in the support group, Thor was definitely my favorite. I also like that it was a whole process. There was no promises of a cure, just support and hope, and 'if this doesn't work then we can try this', just like real life. This could be a good book to help people understand more about OCD without the feel that they're reading a textbook, and with getting a more personal touch by seeing everything through a relatable character's eyes. *I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Didn't fit *a copy was provided by publisher for early review* The Unlikely Hero is about a group of kids including our main character Adam who have serious cases of OCD and about how they have to deal with the consequences of there actions and have to come to terms a bout their mental health. I have to admit that I had a hard time with this book, it's not that it's a bad book but it wasn't for me, I had a hard time connecting to the story and characters, for me there was nothing to really grab on to. The one thing I really enjoyed about this book was the original concept, I thought having a book about kids with OCD was great, it is not something you see in the Young Adult genre, it just didn't live up to what I was hoping it would. As an overall I feel that this book had it's problems but I would recommend this book to the right person, just because it's not my thing doesn't mean it's not right for someone else.
