The large glossy hardcover with stunning pictures caught my eye immediately, but more importantly the details on specific vegetable varieties and tips for prolonging their season are really helpful. The writing style is engaging and I have picked it up everyday for the last few weeks to look up some detail or other. It is good enough that it hasn't made to the library yet, it remains on the kitchen table for daily use!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Entertaining and Inspiring I have been growing vegetables in my back yard for years, and reading Niki's book I feel inspired to step it up a notch and extend my short growing season into fall and beyond. This book has many layers of information for the beginning to advanced gardener. Niki lives and breathes gardening and her enthusiasm is infectious. Not afraid to admit her own past mistakes, Niki shows that anyone can "dig in" and produce tasty home vegetables with minimal investment, following some time-honoured principles and using materials at hand. I can't wait to harvest salad greens in the middle of next winter! You will not regret buying this book, even if you remain a summer gardener.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An absolute must-read for veggie gardeners When you live in chilly climates, gardening is always a race against the clock. “Get those seeds in on time so we can harvest the veggies before the frost hits!” Wouldn’t it be great if we could have a longer growing season? This book tells you exactly how to work around Mother Nature so you can start planting earlier and keep harvesting well into the winter. And what’s more, the techniques in this book are so simple! Reading Niki Jabbour’s writing is like chatting with a friend, and the passion she brings to the art of gardening is truly infectious. From garden setup to veggie descriptions, from rotating your plants to ”tricking” cool-weather veggies into growing in the summer, this book is jam-packed with useful information and encourages readers to experiment and “play” with the garden. And the book is laid out beautifully. It starts with the basics of year-round gardening, including how to prepare your space and where and how you should plant. Next up is a section that includes descriptions of just about any type of vegetable or herb you might want to plant. From arugula and asparagus to turnips and winter squash, this section covers how they taste, exactly when to plant, when to harvest, and a list of the author’s favourite varieties. The entire book is written in Niki’s light, easy style and is accompanied by gorgeous photos to help you along. I have never been more excited to start my garden, and I definitely recommend this book for other veggie gardeners!
