Rated 5 out of 5 by from A shadowy thriller The Splinter Cell game is perfectly brought to books in this intriguing tale. The personality of Sam Fisher is dead on, as he sets out on his next mission for Third Echelon. Gripping, shadowy- fans of the game will enjoy this next Clancy installment. I did. Even those unfamiliar with the game will enjoy this usual brand of Clancy plotlines. A great read.

Read from the Book

1 It’s like being in a state of nonexistence. A vacuum. Darkness and light at the same time, and no sense of gravity. There’s no air, but I know I’m breathing. Certainly no sounds are present. I see and feel nothing. There are no dreams. That’s what sleep is like for me. I’m blessed, I suppose. I can will myself to sleep anywhere, anytime. I didn’t train to do it. It’s always been that way, ever since I was a kid. I simply tell myself, “It’s time to sleep now.” And I do it. I’m sure a lot of people in the world would envy this talent. I don’t take it for granted because in my business I have to catch sleep in the strangest places and at the oddest times. I feel the pulsating pressure on my wrist. It gently pulls me out of this dimensionless world, and I slowly regain the use of my senses. I feel the warm metal against my face. I hear far-off nondescript echoes. The OPSAT attached to my wrist continues to wake me. There’s a little T-shaped rod that protrudes from the flexible band when the silent “alarm” goes off. The rod rocks back and forth, nudging my pulse, telling my body that it’s time to rouse. When I first saw it demonstrated, it reminded me of a James Coburn spy movie from the sixties in which he played a secret agent who could stop his heart on command. This apparently put him in some kind of hibernation. He had a wristwatch with the same kind of T-shaped rod that poked hi

Thomas L. Clancy, Jr., known to his multitudes of fans as Tom Clancy, was born in 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated from Loyola College in 1969, became an insurance agent, and in 1973 became the owner of an insurance agency. It was not until 1980 that he started writing military thrillers. Clancy's novels are highly successful, detailed techno-thrillers about espionage, the military and advanced technology. Clancy is so well liked by the military that he has been invited to visit military bases and tour ships. His first bestseller was Red Storm Rising, a fictional military account of a conventionally fought World War 3, published in 1986. His books Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, and Clear and Present Danger were so popular they were adapted into major motion pictures. Some other bestsellers by Clancy are The Cardinal of the Kremlin, The Sum of All Fears, and Rainbow Six. Into the Storm: A Study In Command (1997) is part of a nonfiction series cowritten with retired U.S. Army General Fred Franks Jr., commander of the U.S. Army VII Corps, whose job was to defeat Saddam Hussein's Republican Guard during the 89-hour ground war in Desert Storm. Other nonfiction written by Clancy includes Submarine, Armored Cav, Fighter Wing, and Airborne, which describe the workings of military units and their weapons, and Reality Check: What's Going on Out There? Tom Clancy lectures at the FBI, attends meetings at the CIA, and often dines at the White House. He is a member of the U.
