About the Author

Mike Filey came by his love of Toronto at a very early age, relying on the city’s streetcars to get him to the Bathurst and St. Clair Branch of the public library.   And he relied on his parents’ advice that, should he get lost, just tell the nice policeman your phone number; Melrose 2154.   He also remembers a horse trough at the Bathurst/Bloor corner, not far from where some guy named Mirvish had just moved into the neighbourhood, opening a new store called Honest Ed’s.   Then there was his introduction to real poetry at the Downeyflake doughnut shop where he memorized:   “As you go through life brother, Whatever be your goal, Keep your eye upon the doughnut, And not upon the hole.”   For the past couple of decades Mike’s main focus has been his passion for researching and recording the fascinating history of his hometown.   In the process he has written more than two dozen books on various facets of Toronto ’s past and, for a three decades, has contributed a popular column, “The Way We Were” to the Toronto Sun newspaper.   He can also be heard at noon every Sunday on radio station am740. As a speaker and tour guide on his favourite subject, he is much in demand by local organizations and groups visiting his city.   The Fileys, Mike and wife Yarmila, live, cut grass, shovel snow and pay taxes in Willowdale, now a part of the City of Toronto .   John McQuarrie is an Ottawa based photographer whose major clients have included Coors
