Simon Pulse | May 3, 2011 | Trade Paperback

Uglies is rated 4.25 out of 5 by 4.
The Uglies series has more than 3 million books in print, has been translated into twenty-seven languages, and spent more than fifty weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Now all four books feature fresh new covers and will reach an even wider audience.

Tally’s adventures begin in Uglies, where she learns the truth about what life as a Pretty really means. She rebels against the surgery that will make her a Pretty, but ultimately succumbs. In Pretties, Tally has forgotten all about her Ugly life, and when she’s reminded, she has a hard time listening. And what little’s left of the old Tally is further compromised in Specials, because Tally has been transformed into a fierce fighting machine. But when she’s offered a chance to forever improve civilization, will she be able to overcome her brainwashing? The answer is evident years later in Extras, after the Pretty regime has ended. Boundless human creativity, new technologies, and old dangers have been unleashed upon the world. But fame and popularity can be just as dangerous as extreme beauty….

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Idea but Plot And Scenes could have been better. The iDea was cool and amazing but I though that the plot could have been better. First it started off slow and boring then got better. But I found that some scenes that the author could have made amazing were skipped over. They also didn't give much background or hints or much of anything really. The characters were good but they don't really talk about how they look and kind of leave that open for you to think up how they look. Also the ending was thrilling and pretty good but it wasn't what i expected. It seemed to go a little fast once it got going.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing This book is going to let your imagination flow. It makes you really think about what the world could have been like. It gets your mind going. It makes me think how things could be like in the world. This book will let your imagination go wild, making you wonder if this could actually happen. Would you like to be turned pretty or stay ugly? Would you run away so you would never have to be turned ugly and live in the ruins? I am definitely going to read the other books in the series, (Pretties, Specials, and Extras).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Divergent's Long Lost Cousin This book reminded me a lot of Divergent. Initially that's how I found this book, someone recommended that I read it if I had read and liked Divergent (which I loved!!). This book was similar.. not as good as Divergent in my opinion but defiantly still worth a read. It was a slow start as they had to explain a lot to the readers, and I imagine the second book will be of a faster pace. They really leave you wondering what will happen at the end.. not so much a cliff hanger where you NEED to read the next book, but more curious to see if Tally will commit to what she said she will do (don't want to give specifics as to ruin it for people who haven't read the book!). That's what makes this book so light; you can read just this one and not HAVE to read the rest of the series because they leave you curious but not at the edge of your seat as that you need to run out and get book two to find out what happens. I think because I am an adult reading a teens book; some of the emotions and relationships that Tally goes through is no longer relateable to me, it was hard to get a strong connection to the story and characters. But like I said, worth a read !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Dystopian Classic I first read this book in grade 6, and thought it was brilliant. Now, reading it again some years later when I rediscovered it at a used book store, it was still just as good as the first time I read it. The idea behind the story is exceptional, and the characters are beautifully developed. Definately a must-have for fans of the Hunger Games!

About the Book

Everybody gets to be supermodel gorgeous. What could be wrong with that?

Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. Not for her license -- for turning pretty. In Tally's world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there.

But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world -- and it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.
