Rated 3 out of 5 by from All about Niko I didn't mind this installment in the series, but I'm not raving. I liked Nikolai's character alot, and Renata was a very strong (if not willful) breedmate. But the book is set almost entirely in Montreal, and I really missed the storylines of the other characters at the compound. There was a nice teaser to make you keen to move on to book 6, but because all the Breed friendships were missing, I found the book a wee bit lacking.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Didn't love the main characters Veil of Midnight is the 5th book in the Midnight Breed Series. This book revolves around Niko, the bomb and explosive loving adrenaline junkie member of the Order. Niko is sent to Montreal on a mission to help a reclusive Gen One vampire. While attempting to help him, he meets a cold and heartless Breedmates named Renata with an amazing gift. Renata is also a caregiver of a little girl named Mira who's gifts make her a target. While assassination attempts are made on the Gen One vampire and Mira goes missing Niko and Renata must work together. Niko realizes really quickly that Renata is not the cold and heartless female she makes herself out to be and he can't get her out of his mind. This book is a good installment of the series. There are many major plot developments and new characters introduced in this book that advance the series. This book is though my least favorite of the series so far. I don’t love Niko or Renata’s character in this book. I don’t care for them and do not care if they succeed or find love. I understand why they are drawn together but not interested in them. The book plots and secondary characters made this book a must read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lots of action Book 5 in the Midnight Breed series provides tons of action and enough romance to keep you on your toes the whole time your reading the book. I really enjoyed this installment of the series, the storyline was really great and the characters were also very interesting. I really liked all the twists and turns in this book,it kept me reading and reading right till I finished it. This is a great series and I would recommend it for any PR romance readers. :0)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Great Addition to a Great Series Book five of the Midnight Breed series. Renata has strong psychic powers and is the bodyguard of a breed enemy, but Niko soon realizes that not all is as it seems with her. A great addition to a great series, and I look forward to the next. 110/1000

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't Cover Your Eyes!!! By far this book is the best when it comes to action and the introduction of new and twisted characters. Though this book doesn’t offer up the sensuality and sexiness of the previous books, it delivers with heart pounding menace and destructive action. Adrian brings terror knocking at the Breed’s door and sh*t just got personal. Nikolai aka Niko lives for a fight. He is an adrenaline junkie who lives for the next kill, his weapons are his friends. He is the type to do things his way but he’s about to get a lesson in discipline and an education in love. Niko is on a mission to warn a certain vampire of an upcoming assassination and that job is proving difficult, some questions in a bar leads him to his answer and to the sexiest female he has ever seen. What Niko finds is worst than he expected, and he realizes the vampire he was trying to save is better off dead. Renata is a bodyguard to the most evil Gen One( old as hell vampire) out there. She longs for the day she can leave but she knows that future is very bleak, until Niko walks into her life. With one kiss he changes her outlook on life and she starts thinking that he might be able to save her. Renata is a tough as nails chick but what vampires fear is her extraordinary psychic abilities, in just a blink of an eye she can bring the most trained and deadly vampire to their knees. All her life Ren has known only darkness but one golden hair vamp is about to bring the light. What happens next is a series of twist and turns and some of the worst betrayals yet. It was one shocking twist after the next, and the new characters that get introduced will have your head spinning in hopes of a book of their own. It was refreshing to see the world of this deadly breed of warriors get shaken, and death came a knocking, plus to see Niko struggle with bloodlust just proved how imperfect they are and also how very human. I just loved this one, the love story was blah at best but I think Miss Adrian wanted to introduce a more intricate and plot induced story line because this one makes you wanna dive right into the next book. Renata as a female is kick butt she can take down vamps just like the breed warriors and I loved it. Niko was just Niko, what can I say he’s a bit of a smarta$$ and he is cocky what’s not to love. Veil of Midnight was a smash, pow and boom. It rocked. The Midnight Breed warriors are a smash hit. 2010-028

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Action Galore When Nikolai is sent to Montreal to find and warn a Gen One vampire about an assassin who might be coming for him, he doesn’t have a clue what he is getting himself into. His fairly straightforward mission becomes quickly complicated, and at the centre of it is a cold, hard bodyguard named Renata. She’s like nothing Niko has encountered before. Renata is not only skilled and lethal with blades and guns, but she has an incredible psychic ability that will bring a Breed male to his knees, and not in a good way. When a child that Renata cares about is placed in danger, she knows she can’t rescue her alone. Niko and Renata know they must work together, but working becomes difficult when they are tempted by passion and desire. Veil of Midnight is the fifth novel in Lara Adrian’s Breed series about a group of vampire warriors known as the Order. This latest installment was bursting with action! There are three areas of focus in this novel: the relationship plot, the continuing inter-novel plot, and a subplot that sets up the next novel in the series. The plot between Niko and Renata was incredibly suspenseful and exciting, but the romance aspect seemed like less of a focus when compared to the previous novels. Don’t get me wrong, there is still desire and steamy scenes galore, just maybe 15% less. What is lost in intimacy is gained in a “don’t-interrupt-me-until-I’m-done-the-entire-book” frenzy of conflict, combat, and turmoil for the characters. The continuing plot seemed to go off on a bit of a tangent in this book. It didn’t really progress that much toward the main goal, but it was very enjoyable because new elements and character were added into the mix making the whole thing more lush and elaborate. The subplot, while very brief, lays the foundation for the next novel in an intriguing manner. Going into Veil of Midnight, I didn’t feel that I knew as much about Niko as I did about some of the other warriors prior to their stories. Niko turned out to be an interesting character, but he’s definitely not my favorite of the warriors. Renata on the other hand is a fabulous female character who I adored reading about. She’s very tough and strong physically as well as emotionally. Renata actually participates as much, if not more, in the action scenes as Niko. It was easy to cheer her on while reading because a strong female heroine makes for an excellent story. As I mentioned before, the romantic moments took up a little less of the novel than usual, but the steamy scenes weren’t lacking in heat. The characters were very compatible in combat and even more so intimately. The heat started building early on, but it ebbed and flowed for quite awhile before it amounted to anything. When it did, it was explosive! Veil of Midnight had a change of setting from the previous four novels. This one was set in Montreal, which, as a Canadian, excited me. I did have one small complaint regarding this, as did other reviewers. No one spoke any French at any point during the book. I think the novel would have been more convincing and realistic of the Montreal experience with some French going on. Overall, Veil of Midnight was an exciting continuation of the series and I would highly recommend it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My favourite so far... Nikolai, the smart-ass, love em’ and leave em’ type of warrior has left the compound in search of Yakut, a Gen One vampire. The situation with Dragos has reached dangerous levels and Gen One vampires are being killed at an alarming rate. Renata, a Breedmate, has been a servant/bodyguard to Yakut for two years. She knows her way around a knife and can drop a vampire with her mind in one second flat. The only problem is she can’t control the after effects. Nikolai is drawn to Renata at first glance, not only by her beauty but the fact that she can spar like a warrior, to him, that is damn sexy. When Yakut is murdered, Nikolai is arrested and sent away. Renata, after realizing that the young girl she has sworn to protect has gone missing, rescues Nikolai and together they search for the girl and the ones responsible for the various murders. The chemistry between Nikolai and Renata is hot, the most electric out of the couples. Renata is outspoken during intimate times, knowing exactly what she wants. She goes toe to toe with Nikolai and his advances finally breaking down when she realizes he is not just some arrogant warrior but true to his word and “nice”. With this instalment to the Midnight Breed, the series just went from good to great! There was an excellent plot twist at the end and the foundation for the next book of the series has been set. It will also be interesting to see how a little girl in the compound will change the dynamic of the group.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from GOOD BUT HAS IT’S FAULTS VEIL OF MIDNIGHT is an intricate, action packed and well written story. Containing several ongoing sub-plots and many different POV’s. Although not as romance filled as the past 4 books in the Midnight Breed series. I feel that this instalment could easily be read as a stand alone as it steps away from the previous story arc and main ‘breed’ characters. Lara Adrian has however filled in any relative back story and given the rules to her Vampire world, so you won’t be lost. Nikolai, a member of the military faction ‘The Order’ has been sent to Montreal to find a Generation One Vampire targeted for assassination. Sergei Yakut at first proves difficult to locate, however once Nicolai identifies the beautiful but deadly Renata as his personal bodyguard, the game changes. She turns the tables, tricking and immobilizing the blonde warrior with her physic powers then delivering him personally to her boss’s lodge. Initially Yakut plays the gracious host but after Nicolai snoops around the grounds and discovers the atrocities that have been taking place within, all bets are off. In a rage he confronts the Vampire and is expelled from his property. Renata has been a prisoner of Yakut’s for 2 years now, unable to escape because of the blood bond between the two; she is living a life of fear and random beatings if she refuses to follow his orders. While enslaved Reneta has taken into her charge a young girl named Mira. The also imprisoned child is an oracle, able to show the future in her mirrored eyes. Nicolai, having gazed into them saw a very sexual future between himself and the mysterious Renata. He’s doubtful but just the same won’t be leaving the lodge without learning more about Renata. Events soon unfold which see Nicolai trying to stop another attempt on Yakut’s life and being wrongly accused of murder. He is then taken into custody by the Enforcement Agency who plan to torture him for information then kill him. Mira is in turn sold into slavery. Although Renata now finds herself free from her years of servitude she is determined to rescue the young prophet. She won’t be able to find Mira alone however. First she’s going to have to free Nikolai and convince him to help her. Renata can only hope she’s not too late and that the future foreseen between them can somehow be changed. As I said this is a good read but not without its flaws. My main gripe (and I just couldn’t get past this) is that this book takes place exclusively in Montreal yet not one character main, sub or otherwise speaks French or has any kind of accent. Ever. One of the secondary characters actually had a Texan accent and the heroine herself, although born and raised on the streets of Montreal never once speaks French. This could really have taken place anywhere and I’m wondering why you would base your book in Montreal and not have any French characters? It was almost as if the author wrote the story then pulled out a map and pointed a finger. There are also a couple of really silly scenes involving Nikolai’s ability to grow vines, some of which could shoot guns. This had me saying to myself, Oh come on, that’s ridiculous. (Then I reminded myself, you’re reading Vampire romance) I have enjoyed this series as a whole and most of this book was excellent. The ending chapters in particular are quite awesome; romantic, erotic and suspenseful. The next in the series, ASHES OF MIDNIGHT takes place in Berlin, I wonder if anyone will speak German?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from better and better This series is amazing. The character's are all well written and you get swept up in their stories of finding love with some action packed adventure along the way. Renata is a girl who can handle herself and knows her weapons, which Niko finds damn attractive. When Niko see's his future in the child's eyes, he can't believe that Renata would be apart of it. He was just on a mission to locate and talk to a Gen One, not at all looking for his bonded mate, but between her rescuing him, on the run, and on a mission, they found each other.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So Good, It Took One Day I LOVED this book. For me, this was a one day read.Has everything you could possibly want in a paranormal romance book. If you love vampires, you HAVE to read this book. Actually, read the whole series! You won't be disappointed!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Steamy but.... This book was lent to me by a friend, and perhaps it was because I didn't know this was a book in a series when I read it, but I just couldn't get into it at all. The steamy scenes - awesome! The rest of it - just meh. I found myself skipping pages just to get it done. Lots of jumping around of point of view, and to me, the story-telling was a little dry. I don't think I'll read any other of Lara Adrian's books.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not sure why I keep coming back? This was the 5th book in the series and I think that there was too much time between this book release and the last. It's about Breed Warrior Nikolai and a fiesty female guard . Nikolai goes to warn a first gen that his life is in danger only to find that the elder he has been sent to protect is the bad guy. While on the run with the elder's only female guard, the two much find a way to rescue a young girl with special powers. Over all I found myself getting bored while reading this book. I think it could be because I was less invested in the character that I considered second string. I'm really hoping the next one is better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fast paced, exciting and interesting novel. Not once did I feel bored while reading this book, the characters were sexy and dangerous. A lot happened in this novel to move the story line along, of course that seems to happen in every one of her novels. Her story line never seems to disappoint and her characters are never boring or obnoxious. I can’t wait for the next in this exciting series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Series Gets Better and Better "Veil of Midnight", is Nicholai (Niko) and Renata's story and takes place in and outside of Montreal, Canada, where he is sent to track down 'Sergei Yakut', a reclusive Gen One vampire. The Order has been trying to locate and warn the Gen One's because an assassin has been targeting and taking them out one by one. There are very few Gen One vampires left. Niko gets a lead on Yakut's whereabouts through questioning some young Breed males in a bar in Montreal when he sees and attractive woman come in. She attracts his attention, he approaches and questions her, then she runs from the bar with Niko in pursuit because he is sure she knows something about Yakut. The woman (Renata) is a Breedmate who uses her powerful gift to bring Niko down in an instant. As the story progresses we learn that Renata is virtually enslaved to Sergei Yakut, who is a brutal bloodthirsty Gen One vampire living in an isolated area outside of Montreal. Yakut also keeps a young girl captive, who is a Breedmate with an extremely special gift. Renata has bonded with the little girl, loves her dearly and will do anything to protect her. In addition to her Breedmate ability, Renata trains as a warrior incessantly and is an expert with weapons, especially knives. She is quite the lady!! She is however emotionally vulnerable and very suspicious of Niko as their relationship intensifies. I always liked Niko's character, he is the "jokester" of the warriors. He loves to tease his fellow soldiers about their settling down and 'bonding', with their mates. He is a master with weaponry and actually crafts his own for use. Like all the Order's warriors, Niko is a battle honed soldier dedicated to carrying out his mission, he is completely committed to his brethren. Renata gradually earns his respect and ultimately his devotion and love as she too is a determined warrior. His special gift is a very unique one and when he and Renata make love, it comes into play. The sexual tension builds between these two and IMHO the eroticism was extremely HOT. Ms. Adrian has developed a separate subplot in "Veil of Midnight", concerning 'Andreas Reichen', a high ranking, well connected and wealthy civilian who lives in one of the Darkhavens in Germany. Andreas was introduced in "Midnight Awakening", 'Tegan's' book and has been an ally of the Order. An exciting storyline surrounding Andreas is developed and next book in the series "Ashes of Midnight", is to be his story. While Andreas is a civilian, he is extremely powerful, his 'gift' is lethal and amazing. I think of all the heroines in Ms. Adrian's novels, Renata is probably the strongest with respect to her gift combined with her warrior skills. She is well mated with Niko and Ms. Adrian wrote a lovely HEA for them. The focus of "The Order's" missions have evolved and changed and this is a transition book. However, what I like about this series is that the plot has evolved over the course of the stories and at no time have the subplots overtaken the main storyline in each book. New characters have been introduced gradually and the subplots are well integrated along with the antagonists in the novels. If you have not read this series I would suggest starting with the first book "Kiss of Crimson", and if you like the story read them in order. So, "sigh", now I wait until May 2009 for Andreas' story. I have to say, despite being way to old to admit to this, I am a total Lara Adrian 'fangirl'.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from getting better A couple of the earlier LA novels were just okay but this one is much better. Good characters, good plot line and a perfect pace. It still reads like a fat-free version of JR Wards' series but not bad. Looking forward to Andreas' story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another excellent book in this series I read Lara Adrian’s first book, Kiss of Midnight loved it! And since her other three in the series were already on the shelves I quickly read them all and enjoyed each one. Which brings me to Veil of Midnight. It took no time to get caught up again in the world of the the Order, a group of Vampires who at first were dedicated to riding the world of Rogue vampires – those who have surrendered to Blood Lust to now tracking down a far greater threat to vampires and humans alike. This is Nicolas’ story. As the book opens, he is in Montreal, trying to find an old Gen One Vampire. Nico wants to warn him that an evil, powerful vampire is targeting all the Gen One vampires and see if he can enlist this powerful vampire in their fight. Instead of finding him however, Nico falls into a trap laid out for him by none other than the heroine Renata, a human female bodyguard. Time and again Renata gets the drop on Nico until finally she needs his help to find her young ward, Mina and must rescue him from a horrible fate. Then they must work together, despite some distrust on both sides, especially Renata’s. Unlike the other Midnight Breed books, this one takes place almost entirely in Montreal and there are just brief appearances of the previous heroes. The action mainly involves Nico and Renata and the evil stacked against them. One of the things that appeals to me in this series is the strength of the heroines. For the most part they are almost an equal match for the alpha Breed heroes and wowzers is Renata almost more than a match for Nico. Considering she’s human, albeit a breed mate human, she can really kick some ass – including Nico’s. And I liked that – I really liked it! And her special talent can really lay him low – with no defences and she uses it on him, more than once. No TSTL heroine is our Renata. I love how near the end, when Nico is behaving like a typical, I am Man and You Woman Must Obey Me, she doesn’t hesitate to let him have it, physically, and then goes on to get the job done. And there is no doubt she can do it. A loner all her life, Renata has been brutalized by the Montreal branch of vampires and is very hesitant to trust Nico, even though she is attracted to him from the beginning. And her strength and will to succeed is one of the things that attracts Nico to her. If I seem to be going on about her quite a bit, it’s because she’s such a well written heroine and it’s so unusual to see a human heroine who’s an equal match for a vampire hero – at least in the ones I’ve read. But I can’t neglect Nico either. He’s another great addition to this most excellent series. He’s compassionate, protective, and sexy and rather than feeling threatened by Renata, appreciates her. And – there is just enough about the next book with Andreas Reichen to start the countdown for the release of Ashes of Midnight! For those who’ve been reading and enjoying this series, Veil of Midnight is a most excellent new addition to the series. For those who haven’t but have been curious, I think this one can be read as a stand-alone since most of it takes place outside of the setting of the previous books.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! I was lucky enough to get an ARC from Lara, I finished the book in 2 days! It was well written, had a great story line and introduced some new aspects to the series that will make things even more interesting. The story takes place in my hometown Montreal, it is a great read. I had trouble putting it down, I actually brought it to work with me to read on my break, something I never do! This is a must read!!!

Read from the Book

Chapter One On stage in the cavernous jazz club below Montreal''s street level, a crimson-lipped singer drawled into the microphone about the cruelty of love. Although her sultry voice was pleasant enough, the lyrics about blood and pain and pleasure clearly heartfelt, Nikolai wasn''t listening. He wondered if she knew—if any of the dozens of humans packed into the intimate club knew—that they were sharing breathing space with vampires. The two young females sucking down pink martinis in the dark corner banquette sure as hell didn''t know it. They were sandwiched between four such individuals, a group of slick, leather-clad males who were chatting them up—without much success—and trying to act like their bloodthirsty eyes hadn''t been permanently fixed on the women''s jugulars for the past fifteen minutes straight. Even though it was clear that the vampires were negotiating hard to get the humans out of the club with them, they weren''t making much progress with their prospective blood Hosts. Nikolai scoffed under his breath. Amateurs. He paid for the beer he''d left untouched on the bar and headed at an easy stroll toward the corner table. As he approached, he watched the two human females scoot out of the booth on unsteady legs. Giggling, they stumbled for the restrooms together, disappearing down a dim, crowded hallway off the main room. Nikolai sat down at the table in a negligent sprawl. "Evening, ladies." The four vampires stared at him
