Visions Of Heat

by Nalini Singh

Berkley | March 6, 2007 | Mass Market Paperbound

Visions Of Heat is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 5.
Used to cold silence, Faith NightStar is suddenly being tormented by dark visions of blood and murder. A bad sign for anyone, but worse for Faith, an F-Psy with the highly sought after ability to predict the future. Then the visions show her something even more dangerous—aching need…exquisite pleasure. But so powerful is her sight, so fragile the state of her mind, that the very emotions she yearns to embrace could be the end of her.

Changeling Vaughn D’Angelo can take either man or jaguar form, but it is his animal side that is overwhelmingly drawn to Faith. The jaguar’s instinct is to claim this woman it finds so utterly fascinating and the man has no argument. But while Vaughn craves sensation and hungers to pleasure Faith in every way, desire is a danger that could snap the last threads of her sanity. And there are Psy who need Faith’s sight for their own purposes. They must keep her silenced—and keep her from Vaughn…

Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not bad but not great (In the event the Chapters-Indigo website elects to delete my rating, I mention here that I gave this book 3 out of 5 stars/leaves.) I found this, the second novel in Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series, to be enjoyable but not great. Good points: What I enjoyed the most with regards to this novel was the continuation of the world building from the previous novel -I enjoyed reading about the nature of the mysterious F-Psy, as well as learning more about Psy and Changeling culture. I also liked the fact that this novel picked up where the first one left off, despite focusing on different characters. Bad points/constructive criticism: The most jarring and annoying aspect to me, both in this and the first novel, was the 'insta love'. In other words, it was frustrating to me to have the two main characters come together as a couple in large part as a result of an outside force (i.e. the 'mating bond'). I find this notion to be one of the most frustrating aspects of romance novels: it is all well and good to have something causing the two characters to be destined to be together, however in all too many novels this becomes the main reason the characters are together at all. It also tends to take the place of the actual construction of a relationship (i.e. through communication and shared experience) in the novel. In this particular novel, while there was some relationship development, much of it visibly came about as a result of this 'mating bond', which was rather frustrating. As a reader I reached the end of the novel wondering what these two characters had in common and this should be *obvious* to the reader, IMHO. (I'm not saying that opposites can't attract, but it seems to me that there needs to be a true and established (i.e. for the reader) meeting of minds for any caring relationship to be believable). I will say that Singh does not fall into the 'insta love' trap as much as other romance writers -she does establish histories for her characters which does serve to flesh them out a bit. I'm also not trying to negate the power of physical attraction -however there is something to be said for the fact that it is *less likely* that one will have good enough knowledge of one's partner after a few days/weeks to be able to develop a REAL relationship based on caring. These things take time, and it seems to me that even telepathy would not instantly enable such a connection. This connection also requires a sufficient amount of time (i.e. detail!) with regards to the writing in order to be established for the reader. So I wasn't entirely convinced. Another slightly annoying aspect was the trope of the 'uber macho male' protecting the 'feisty little female' (TM) which was also present in this book and the previous one. Although Singh does a better job than most at establishing the fact that both the main female character of this novel and that of the previous one have their own 'weapons' (i.e. telepathic abilities) this trope was indeed present throughout the novel. It would be nice to see a female or two on equal ground. Anyways, JMHO. I did enjoy the novel overall despite these noted problems. Other books I recommend: -Angels' Blood, by Nalini Singh -Once Burned, by Jeaniene Frost -Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between, by JA Saare -Dead Girls are Easy, by Terri Garey -Spider's Bite, by Jennifer Estep -Fantasy Lover, by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Visions of Vaughn If Vaughn was a Tree: I would climb him and make a nest. A Medium Size Pool: I would do laps all day long. A Bath Tub: I would soak all day. If Vaughn was naked, I would be naked too. I am happy that I enjoyed the second book in the Psy-Changeling series; I was having some doubts after the first one where it took some time to really get into the story. I was in love in love from the moment the very sexy Sentinel named Vaughn mentioned his first words in the book. Quick rundown, the Psy are a mind race, they feel no emotion and they strive to be perfect or should I say they claim to be perfect. They say cus without feelings there would be no murders, no jealousy and all those other human emotions that causes destruction (Pfffft). The Changelings are shifters, who are all about emotions and getting physical, so lets say these very two races are about to get up close and personal. Faith Nightstar is the money-maker Psy, her visions are worth millions if not billions and they are milking her dry. She also has been having crazy violent dreams, and feels she is slowly going insane. What the Psy race does to defects is to rehabilitate or casually get rid of them. A little adventure to find a Psy woman who left the race behind leads her into Changeling territory, and the arms of a dangerous sentinel. Vaughn aka (I am so sexy I will make your panty drop) is an angry and dark soul. He is deadly and stealth like the Jaguar that he is, and he is dangerous. He lives to protect his alpha and his mate that is until his own mate makes an appearance in the form of Faith (frigid) Nightstar. Vaughn will have to fight to get his woman, and convince her he has the stuff to keep her safe. Well the story pretty much becomes the Faith and Vaughn show, with a murder mystery as the side dish. I am just in love with the Changelings and there touch privileges. Vaughn (sigh) is more animal than man, and that my friends is winner in my book. While reading I was thinking how fast I could lose my clothes if he snuck through my sun roof (really I don’t have a sun roof but am willing to cut a hole in my ceiling). I would go from 0 to 60 in like a second just like a Jaguar (hear me roar/growl). Nalini is building a pretty intriguing world and I am looking forward to all the other Psy-Changeling adventures. Also excited for the Psy man, because guess what dude you can’t hide feelings when you sporting a boner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Keeps getting better With Lucas and Sascha mated(1st book), who would of thought that a changeling and a Psy would be mated, but as Vaughn finds out that fate has a way of having no boundries or discrimination. Faith is a forseer Psy who becomes tormented by visions of blood and murder, and then also visions of pleasure. Vaughn is drawn to Faith and his instinct is to claim her, but because of her fragile state of mind the emotions she wants to feel could also kill her. With someone after Faith, her newly found emotions and the need to for Vaughn to claim his mate, there is so much tension that something could snap at any moment, and they hope it won't be Faith herself. This series just gets better and better with each book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book Faith Nightstar is a Psy who predicts the future. She is kept secluded because anything can trigger a prediction and keeping her in a controlled environment seems to be the best way to handle things. So she as been told. Faith starts to have visions of pleasure, and she thinks that she is going crazy, as nearly all Psy with her powers end up nuts. Also, Psy don't feel. Ever. So, her predictions must be wrong. Vaughn is a sentinel for Alpha Lucas, who we met in Slave to sensation. He is rather guarded and hard. Something, or someone, as it turns out, is making him feel like he needs to keep an eye on the Psy compound. HE has no idea why until one night when he catches Faith sneaking out and he follows her into Lucas' Changeling territory. Even though he does not trust her right off the bat, he feel protective of her. Faith asks for help from the Pack Alpha and once that help is granted, Vaughn takes on the task of keeping her safe, and he soon recognizes Faith as his mate. Faith fights her attraction for Vaughn but once it becomes clear that it is only he who can bring her back from her darkest predictions, she learns to lean on him for support. I went into this book with very high expectations, and they have been filled. I'm giving Visions of heat an A-. This book felt good to read. It had action with Vaughn fighting and going all alpha male to protect his mate. It has mystery in trying to find a killer that Faith was having visions of, but most of all, it had true romance. I also liked seeing all the players from the first Psy/Changeling book. It's best to read this series in order as there many come-back characters.
