by Robert J Sawyer

Penguin Group Canada | March 30, 2010 | Hardcover

Watch: Book Ii In The Www Trilogy is rated 5 out of 5 by 1.

Blind from birth, Caitlin Decter received the gift of sight with the aid of a signal-processing retinal implant. The technology also gave her an unexpected side effect—the ability to “see” the digital data streams of the World Wide Web. And within the Web she perceived an extraordinary presence, and woke it up.

It calls itself Webmind. It is an emerging consciousness that has befriended Caitlin and grown eager to learn about her world. But Webmind has also come to the attention of Watch—the secret government agency that monitors the Internet for any threat to the United States whether foreign, domestic, or online—and they''re fully aware of Caitlin''s involvement in its awakening.

Watch is convinced that Webmind represents a risk to national security and wants it purged from cyberspace. But Caitlin believes in Webmind''s capacity for compassion—and she will do anything and everything necessary to protect her friend…

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Fantastic "Make You Think" Thriller During the launch for WATCH, Robert J. Sawyer talked about all the different examples in science fiction novels and movies in which the emergence of a "consciousness" by machines or computers developed evil. Sawyer said he wanted to explore a story in which the emerging "cogito ergo sum" results in the befriending of humanity rather than the desire to control or destroy it. In his WWW trilogy, and particularly seen in WATCH, the second book in the series, he examines the emergence of the internet itself becoming conscious and being guided by a young blind girl recently being given the gift of sight thanks to an experimental new technology. Caitlin Decter becomes the Anne Sullivan to WebMind's Helen Keller in this riveting and thought-provoking thriller. Sawyer does two things really well in his writing, which is evidenced quite beautifully in WATCH. He tells a compelling tale filled with interesting characters and an intriguing plot and along the way he fills the reader's mind with fascinating debate and cutting-edge scientific thought. Sawyer's novels are always a delicious treat for the mind. I would highly recommend WATCH to both sci-fi fans as well as fans who enjoy being made to really think when they read fiction.
